well fellas I am a little too young to remember the "good years" but I did and do continue to hold george trosley as one of my hero's.

on the door panels of my 40 I have old cartoons covers decopaged into place and I was really lucky once to have george autograph one of them..

Besides Trosley, I really dug Shawn Kerry's (sp?) artwork...both had drawing cars and girls wired! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif As a kid, picking up the latest issue of CARtoons and the newest issue of Skateboarder was one of the best parts of the month.

Last time I was at home I found a bunch of iron-on t-shirt transfers from the 25th Anniversary issue of Car-toons that my brother had collected. I should scan them in.

i too grew up reading CarToons, Drag Cartoons,Hot Rod Cartoons...and Big Daddy Roth. Pete Millar was my favorite cartoonist, i think the quality of CarToons suffered when he left to start Drag cartoons,which i feel was the best of the bunch. the later years (70's up) of CarToons never did anything for me.

does anybody remember Millar's Wonder Warthog? he was the "hog of steel" with the wheel standing olds tornadoand the mustang Hogmobile.he was part of Drag Cartoons,but they did two issues on it's own

and now with the modern marvels of the internet and ebay,i'm once again able to enjoy them

Mr. Trosley lives right up the road, outside Philly. He is always at the Hot Rod Hoe Down. VERY approachable, always cheerful and makes his artwork easily available. Which artist was it in Cartoons that always drew the cars jacked up real high and put little pumkin faces on the 3rd members? That always stayed with me...and it is funny Cartoons came up because back a few weeks ago I had Deuce pin stripe my car and I had him do a pumkin face on the rear end because of those old mags...I wish I still had all of mine...I only managed to hold onto one issue over the years and of course that guys stuff was not in it.

Ive collected just about all the old Drag Cartoons, for the second time! Wish I would have kept all those mags that mom would buy me when she went grocery shopping. 35 cents of pure entertainment! Pete Millar rules!

Pete Millar was THE reason I started doing cartoons and striping in junior high school(55-57).One of the first cartoons I ever painted was copied from an issue of Hot Rod.It was an airplane with a V-8 and Deuce grill shell with the pilot's hand extended holding a shifter(with pinky finger sticking up-I think Pete originated that).Painted it on a convertible top boot for a guy in town.Saw him at a class reunion a couple years ago(40th)and gave him the original artwork I'd used for the painting and blew his mind!
I had a conversation with Pete about a year before he died and told him the story.He was quite flattered that he had been my inspiration and we had a great talk.
After he died I painted a tribute to him on the fender of my Safari(see enclosed pic).To my astonishment,I received a phone call a couple weeks ago from his daughter Robin who had seen a pic of the car(I think one that Ilene Roth's brother had taken).As my phone number was right next to the tribute,she decided to call and thank me.It was my turn to be flattered.Just my 2 cents.

I have collected Toons mags since the mid 80's. I have #1 issues of Surftoons, Cycletoons and Dragcartoons in my collection. They are some of my most treasured things, remember the story when Pappy takes his friend to checkout a old rod in his just finished Tbucket, they wind up some old moutain road on the trip home he loses his breaks and they end up stacked on a flat bed truck with an old farmer talkin about a load of scrap.The car they haul home is a 36 roadster with a LaSalle grill and Pappy cant figure out why the guy wants it. Very funny to say the least.Lets not forget Errol McCarthy, he drew the We Dont Have To Tell You What Happened Next! single page toons that picture a comedy disaster about to happen. Keep an eyeout for them a garage sales and buy every issue you can get your hands on, they are getting hard to find.

I met Trosely this year at Posies open house. Posies was real GAY but George was cool as hell. Suprised the shit outta me as I'm walking through the shop and I spied a table with a bunch or CARtoons stuff on it. I checkin it out and I look up and there's George. I freaked cuz he is like a rock star to me. I shake his hand and stammer on like he is the man and his stories got me interested in cars and what not. He was real cool and shot the shit till my buddie dragged me away cuz I was soundin' like a groupie or something! People were lookin' at me funny, screw 'em. I also collect this stuff...I turn 12 again when i pull them out and look at them. I kina figured there were others out there.
I have alot of one hit wonder hot rod comics also...maybe ill try and scan a couple covers.

by the way, I dug 2 circa-'81 Hustler magazines from a debris pile down the street, and in 'em were a couple of Trosley cartoons.

back in '79 I paid a visit to Petersen Publishing and met Dennis Ellefson, who edited CARtoons and illustrated for other Petersen titles. very nice fellow, encouraging to a young, lost kid/artist. he had an office in the little bungalows on the 'campus'. he showed me a few Trosley pieces including some of his Hustler work. I had no idea!
