here are some pics of Matt's (hotroddrummer) first exhaust system. in case you don't know Matt and his dad (Denny) own Ionia Hot Rod Shop. this exhaust is in a duece chassis that they built for a customer. he still has to finish the tail pipes(not that there is much to them) and they just got the body on it recently. it's a five window if memory serves me correctly. anyway, it's sure to be top notch when these boys are done with it.
i'd say it's pretty damn good for a first attempt. see Denny, he does pay attention some times http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif!!
lets see some other custom exhausts you kids have done. i'll let you direct any questions, comments, critisisms or compliments on this one in Hotroddrummer's direction.
as with most stuff we all like to do, there is alot more work involved in this than it looks...

that's nice work.i like the fact he worked in a H-pipe. you're right ,it's a lot of work.but i feel you get a better result making it yourself out of mandrel bends than going down to the local pipe bender.
i'm just finishing up an exhaust for a `32 myself using mandrel bends. the guy wanted two sets of headpipes,so he could run either block-huggers with cutouts,or Sanderson limefire outside headers. all the bends, mufflers and flanges were bought fron Cremco in litchfeild mn. they are the supplier of the bends, etc in the J.C. Whitney catalog. they will sell to you direct at a good price. their phone # is 1-800-642-0105. everyone who builds their own exhaust should get a copy of their catalog, they have lots of stuff available, including stainless, and are a lot easier to deal with that Headers by Ed

Thanks for posting those pics, Mike....can't wait to see more stuff from Ionia and Charlotte!

Thanks for posting the pics for me Mike!! One of these days I will figure out how to do that.
Anyway, Thanks for the comments so far, I used Mandrel bends from J.C. Whitney and donuts from The Chassis Shop and Ron Covell. It is 2 1/2". The "X" pipe in the center was the trick, The guy I built it for wanted to beable to drop the exhaust and run open headers, suggested dumps but he said no....So the "X" will be removeable while the rest of the exhaust is self supported.
The mufflers are spintech cruiser series (only 2 1/4 " tall)
And are mounted with custom brackets and stablizer bar bushings from a late 90's pontiac.
fully tig welded, flanged.....will be coated with stainless tips.
I've seen my dad build a few systems and have been really excited to see how my first attemp would turn out... I'm very happy with the results.
What do you think??

Nice job man!
Here's another spot to order mandrel bends and exhaust tubing.

I don't know what their prices are compared to JC Whitney or the other mentioned places, though.

It looks pretty nice , but why do you have two sets of mufflers ? hot rods are supposed to be mean and loud http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif that looks like it is going to be all soft & whispy sounding !
FYI -- Here's a good source for stainless for exhaust systems . . .

Wow! That looks really nice guys! Great work! Sure puts my flexpipe and cherrybomb to shame! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

www.spintechmufflers.com (http://www.spintechmufflers.com)
go there....they have sound bit's and such.
they sould actually add a bit of horse power, and the sound is real crisp.
as to the fact it has mufflers......I do what the person giving me the money want me to do. Personally, I like to hear myself think.
Thanks everyone. I'm glad you dig it. It was fun at times and then at other times it was work....but still rewarding in the end....which isn't here yet ( need to finish the tips!)
That X-pipe was a bitch, trying to figure out where to cut it and stuff. I had a small gap to fill, but all turned out fine.
Thanks again!

Pretty nice job ya did. My only concern is how close the exhaust pipe is to the master cylinder. Are you going to put in some kind of heat shield or wrap? Keep up the good work, later plmczy

good point plmczy, Had planned on puttind shields on the mufflers because we heard the run a little hot, but I really hadn't thought about the m/c....My main concern at the time was leaving room for the shift linkage...I'll have to try and work something out.
Good call!

two SETS of mufflers??? what are you talking about man?? it's just one muffler per side (two total) just like normal. it should sound real good. ofcourse i hear ya about me being LOUD!!! my model A will just run baffled zoomies!!!! talk about loud! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks good man! My first exhaust was duals on a 73 Camaro flex pipe (the flimsy dryer hose stuff) clamped to a header extensions and a cherry bombs at the other end with no tailpipes. One side or another kept getting ripped off and when they both stayed on they filled the car with CO. That might explain why I am the way I am today?! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Like I said...looks good and probably safer than my old Mulletmobile.

good looking work.
I have done some exhaust stuff.
After a few jobs, you look the task at hand and a vision pops in your mind on how the job must be cut and fitted.

YEah, finding the angles on those donuts was the trickiest part for me....
it's funny, as I was building this system, I was helping a buddy of mine open up his coffee shop. One night we had to plumb the triple sink, he was like "this is how I was told to do it"....I looked at it for a second and had it all figured out. Finished the job in short order, it was pretty easy after trying to find angles, cutting then grinding to fit....plumbers have it easy, all the angles are right there pre-made...
anyway, nice work to you as well Crosley

so what are the big square boxes in the first few pictures ? I see the shortie steelpacks on the last picture . . . is that the same car as the one with the boxxy things ? it looks like there are two sets of mufflers on it . It could be different cars or maybe the big boxes arent mufflers ?

The picture in the third post isn't of the same system as in the first post, by kustombuilder. the two big boxes are the mufflers (in the first post)
The pic in the third post looks to be a so-cal frame with so-cal exhaust(?)
The first few pics in the first post are in the process of building that x-pipe (equalizes pressures).
Hope that clears up the confusion.

Nice job!
When I was building my headers using donuts, I found a good tip for working out the angles for cutting the donuts.
Make a cardboard circle the same size as the donut, then cut it in half to make two semi-circles.
Hold it in position and mark how much angle you need on it, then transfer the measurement to the donut.
The second template is good when you need to do an 'S' shaped curve.
I also used to use insulating tape to hold the pieces of pipe together when doing a tricky section. That way you could get all the pieces right before having to weld them.

Thanks http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I see donuts being mentioned, what are they? Whenever donuts are mentioned in relation to exhaust, I think of the seal between the head pipe and exhaust manifold. later plmczy

[/ QUOTE ] http://www.covell.biz/images/Donuts.jpg They look like donuts, but are actually hollow. They allow you to make very tight bends.Available from: Ron Covell (http://www.covell.biz/donuts.htm)among others.
