Well, another one's in the books. Butch and crew put on a memorable meet as always. We had our expected great time in spite of general bad luck among the HAMBster Herd this weekend.
Joe showed up with a brand new paint job on the now finished body, and it's flat out beautiful. Everybody took pictures, so there'll be some shortly I'm sure. It's solid yellow with a red flame job on the nose, yellow scoop and centers on the front wheels and red lettering and highlights. Just enough chrome bits to accent it all tastefully, including a hand made grill piece that fits the design perfectly. It's easily the prettiest HAMBster to date, peroid.
Katuna and crew made the meet and dropped by, it was nice to see'em again.
Tom and Patti made it by on Saturday for our HAMBster elims and got to watch a couple of our races. Which brings me to ...........
Lee won the HAMBie this meet in some of the ugliest racing since we instituted the award. :D
With just the three of us there I drew Joe, and Lee got the bye for our first round. Joe and I both skirted the water and staged up with cold tires. When the tree dropped I lit the evil red eye, giving Joe a freebie despite his missed second gear. The run was great but as they say; "There're many ways to lose a drag race.".
Joe and Lee lined up together next round, with Joe running the hides cold again while Lee warmed'em up as usual. The tree this time witnessed a matching pair of reds when they launched. :o
Lee's faux pas was smaller than Joe's however, for the win by default.
And thus; the first time the HAMBie was won entirely on red lights.
We tied a red shop rag to it in "honor" of the circumstance prior to making the presentation at our barbeque & get-together that evening. :D
As if that weren't enough, I red lit out again in the first round of the next day's Open Wheel bracket racing and Lee broke his third gear dogs, also in first round. Looking at our slips we'd both have won otherwise.
Joe's engine spit a piece of a valve guide out the pipe in the pits and started making expensive noises. End of the story for that engine, guess the decision to finish the next one was just made.
Oh well. Rocky kept our spirits up with his first place trophy in E Gas and some friends (also with actual nostalgic cars) took both first and second in OW, so though it wasn't us it was still good. We got Rocky's winner's circle picture took and said "later" around 5:00 that afternoon, with Eagle Field plans already in progress.
The HAMBie'll be there next and we all voted to crate ThingyM & his car up and ship'em on ahead to make sure they get there too. :D
I'd stuffed the 264 grind cam in Barn Job's stocker but tried to cheap it out with the stock valve springs. The bottom end's now strong enough to light the hides at will with just the pedal but the taller lobes are floating the valves again. I guess it comes under the heading of "No shit, Sherlock", and "Duh"! :o
Oh well, I'll put the new ones in before Eagle Field.
Gonna be fun running on naked asphalt once again.
The stronger bottom end worked so well that we still ran our present speeds and ETs in spite of the floating valves, so we're optimistic for both Eagle Field and the ANRA finish in August.
Russ is rehabbing (is that a word?) well from his operation and is fully planning on being there in August.

I've got some pictures to add as soon as I get them downsized enough to post.
With our current schedule, (damn this retirement thing is wearing us out.......:p) it shouldn't take much more than a few days to get them up.:D
We had a ball on Saturday.......good meeting some new faces, watching some fun races and eating all of that good food that Joe and friends spread out for the gang. Really gives us some strong incentive to get our act together and get the car done.

Here's a few quick pics from Sat. Didn't get too many this time. I think all the race pics are first round Sat. morning. Pure nostalgia.
Joe's car is a work of art. Shame about what happened.
Met some more new HAMBers (new to me anyway:D) and had a great time with our "crew". See y'all at Eagle Field!

It was good meeting you Katuna.
Gotta love Joe's sense of humor in dealing with the problem......."stick a fork in it".:D

For anyone who hadn't noticed, that's a plastic fork in the third stack "pipe stopper" on Joe's car in two of Katuna's pictures. Joe's response to having had the engine digest something internally and spit a piece out the pipe; "Stick a fork in it, it's done." Joe has a gentleman's sense of humor.
In Tom's first picture the Bantam is "Flathead Gary"s, a cool guy. He went on to win Open Wheel on Sunday.
The next one shows Mike's yellow Crosley ready to stage behind Joe's car. Mike took O/W at the last meet and went on to take O/W runner-up on Sunday.
As Gary said before the picture session; "It's good to see actual nostalgic builds taking trophies home.". :D

I was diggin' that little Bantam flattie but I never made time to look for it in the pits. I guess I was having too much fun watching all the old tin clean up the O/W class.
You better not let the Pres. see all those "clunkers" setting around the pits unattended or you'll be racing Prius' in Oct.
