Hey guys and gals A man I know has a 47 flathead V-8 that he wants to sell for eight hundred bucks, which right now I can't afford but someday I plan to make that engine mine. And I was wondering if anyone used these old engines and what kind of performance the cad flatheads offered. Well if anybodys got pictures I'd like to see them thanks a bunch!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've seen pics of a couple.I think the novelty value would be greater than performance.

they weigh a rediculous amount, hard to get parts for and have a pain in the butt exhaust ports. I've seen some in some cars, they kinda look neat with the exhaust comming out the top but I'd hate to have to rebuild one.

Looks like that exhaust set-up would boil the Gas in the Carb.

I recall reading that Ak Miller swore by them before OHV. Said, "why spend tons of $ trying to make a Ford bigger when the Cad was already at 335(?)" I think there's still speed eqpt floating around on eBay some times. Hey, two of'em would power a Sherman tank!
Would love to see more of that coupe! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That would be Sinus, he put it in a '32 roadster, and ran 14's @ the Antique Nats, pretty impressive for an old tank motor

I stand corrected: a 32!!....red oxide body, wasn't it? With some beautifully shaped extractors. Used to have a pic somewhere.

{Only just remembered it was Sinus. Knew it was something weird!}

Found a pic. Old exhaust though.

Someone famous did before the war. They ran a stock looking '32 roadster with the big Caddy flathead, I read about it in the bio SRM or R&C did of them a little while ago. No picture, as I recall, but it sounded like a neat car. Wasted a lot of Ford-powered rods with it, I guess. Senter, maybe? I've been trying to think of this since I first read this post but I don't think it's going to come to me.

I have only seen a few hot rods using those Cad flatheads.
The engines do show up on ebay and I have seen a few going for short money at the end of the auction. They do not show up that frequently.
The vintage speed equip for the engine rarely shows up in any quantity on ebay and usually gets some pretty decent bids when it does show up. I hear that some old boat guys look for these engines and speed parts to put in period boats that originally used Cad engines in the late 40s.

I think Edmunds was the only one who made heads and intakes for them. there is one around here in a 35 ford phaeton that's been some of the magazines. they look pretty cool all dressed up. there is another one around here under construction, in a chopped and channeled 32 coupe.

Thanks for the info.I'll keep my eyes peeled to be able to learn more about these motors.

I drove around a 41' Cad model 60 for a year..., and for the most part it was reliable and moderately powerful to push around the heavy Cad body with an Automatic trans!

I did experience vapor lock a couple of times and had to prime the carb to get it started again.

If you're putting it into a light car without a hood it should be pretty strong and fun!

As far as performance parts being available..., I have no idea where to start! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Good luck http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

hey yorgatron its got everything from an automatic transmission to ceramic plated manifolds. And if I do buy it, it won't be for a while but I feel safe in waiting because I have a feeling that nothing will happen to it where it is now for a long time.

I have mucho first hand info about 47 Caddy flatheads because I had one as a daily driver for a few years. I found it on Union Ave in Portland, Oregon for $250...a forlorn looking pink [!] series 62 caddy 4 door sedan sitting at a gas station. The hubcaps and skirts were stored in the trunk and I had the money in my jeans. Couldn't resist!
I bought it and drove it home, up the river 85 miles with no drama. I changed the oil and adjusted the idle mix to make it idle like a sewing machine. MIne had the 4 speed hydro and it ran harder than any ford flathead I ever had. I'm sure the advantage of having the low gears in the hydro really helped the flatmotor move that barge along smartly. In those days the interstate speed limits were 70-75 MPH and I never had a problem keeping up with traffic. The engine ran quietly, never heated or vapor locked and the only problem I ever had with it was cold weather starting. Even that wasn't much of a hassle because I lived close to a hill. On the mornings the 6 volt battery wouldn't spin the engine over fast enough, I'd simply coast down the hill with the key on. At 12 MPH I'd pull the shift lever into Low and the engine would always start.
When I'd power brake that old bee-otch up and let off the brake, the tires would spin, the front would come up and on smooth payvement it'd scarf second gear! It's shift into 4th at 65 MPH and I have no idea how fast it'd go but 100-110 wouldn't be a problem at all.
I traded the caddy off for a pickup when I moved into a house...needed a pickup to haul stuff..
My experience with the caddy flathead was very positive. I never hadda work on it at all and it got pretty durn fair gas mileage too. I'd like to have another one someday..with the hydro behind it in a light hot rod.

IT HAS TONS OF TOURQUE AND RUNS PRETTY GOOD,SOUNDS KINDA MEAN THEY WOULD TURN UP ALOT MORE R'S IF THEY WERE BALANCED. THERE IS BIG (LIKE THE SIZE OF A NUMBER 8 SHOE) COUNTER WEIGHTS SWINGING AROUND WITH THE CRANKSHAFT. THE FLYWHEEL IS VERY HEAVY. THEY HAVE SOME OF THE VERY FIRST HYDROLIC LIFTERS, AND DON'T SEEM TO FLOAT. ALL IN ALL ITS VERY COOL BECAUSE IT'S A WALE OF A ENGINE AND EXHAUST COMIG OUT THE TOP, IT GETS LOADS OF ATTENTION. THESE MOTORS WERE USE IN WW2 TANKS AND A LOT OF SAW MILLS I'VE BEEN TOLD .IT HAS BEEN RELIABLE SO FAR. THEY HAVE INSERT ROD AND MAIN BEARINGS. THEY ARE A LOW RPM MOTOR BUT PULL REAL WELL. HOPE THIS IS OF SOME VALUE. WILL

Assdragger said kinda like a flathead Ford, but actually the Cad was so far superior to a Ford there isn't even any comparison. GM knew the exhaust ports running through the block were a disaster and that's why the pipes come out up on top.

And that's why there are still 500,000 Ford Flatheads still running and 7 cadilacs.

Edmunds and Cyclone did heads.
Edmunds and Burrell did iintakes.
Edmunds intakes bring $1,500 to $3,000 on ebay.
Burrel's son is re-casting the Burrel 2x2 intakes. Rumor is they swill sell for around $600.

Lat Burrell repop I saw went for US$1500+. Last I remember though he was doing a few more and was after around $800. Needless to say I've passed on those.

Has anyone ever seen one of these in person? I think 6,000+ vikings were built with them. That intake would sure be strange to see when you open the hood
