Must be either midlife crisis or my 2nd childhood. I hadn't bought a model kit for years but this was too cool to pass up. Re-release of Johan 59 Rambler wagon. Don't even know if I'll build it but the it's sitting with all my die cast stuff right now. Talk about sticker shock, I remember when AMT 3in1 kits were $1.50!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Doc,
I would say around 1961 or '62. The first car I customized was a promo model of a '59 Chevy Brookwood wagon and I think I was about 10 years old at the time. I am 54 now.

Picture of that car on the box brought back a bad memory. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I was a line mechanic @ local Chev dealer back in late 60s, guy brought in a car like this with engine in boxes in back, tried to rebuild, got in over his head. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Work was slow, I was bottom man on totem pole, I got to figure out how to put it back together. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ah yes, that was the price on the ones without the opening hood and detailed engine..They were a couple quarters more...
First one I did was a '59 Bonneville convert, and I still have a 61 Tbird I built in 61...guess the prices/years got fuzzy...
Of everything i've lost it's the memory I miss the most... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That looks newer than any Johan kit I have seen. Where did you find it?

Those were the kits that had the one piece undercarriage, right? Two pieces of wire for the axles, pop the wheels on, and the undercarriage was complete.
Then you could get to the important stuff. Using that wood burning set iron to melt and reshape the body into your latest custom creation.

I used to buy models that matched my slot cars and I'd rebody my chassis!
People would ask me where I'd get all these slot car kits...! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Wish I'd kept a few. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
