My oppinion is wire brush every reachable area, Than blow the debris out, and buy some of that rust converter crap from POR, or Eastwood. Cake the shit on atleast 3 times. The stuff shrinks as it dries, and you will have gaps in coverage, so soak the thing as much as possible.

Mar Hyde makes a product called "One Step" that is paintable primer when it dries. Should be able to get it at Auto Zone, O'Reilley's etc for pretty cheap. One good coat and you're good to go.

Welcome to the HAMB. Please don't "rat out" something like that, make it a cool hot rod or better yet-a custom.

I wouldnt be adverse to doing to it all up fancy but there are a few reasons why i am choosing to go cheap:

1. I am a pastor and make very very little money. On average I make 1100 dollars a month so I am very broke.

2. I run a ministry that works in the areas of Social Justice. We provide meals clothing counsel friendship and the like to the poor, homeless, addicted, prostitutes, low income families and the like and my hope is to use this daily for ministry purposes so there will be heavy traffic and wear on the vehicle.

3. I also have three kids ages 6, 4, and 1 so nice interior and paint and kids makes more cost.

These are some of the deciding factors on going cheap as possible.

Do everything yourself, and it CAN be done on a budget, especially if you have friends who'd let you borrow tools

Time is the biggest cost, if you are willing to learn

I'm kind of an A-hole in mosts opinions, but let me know if I can help. I'd like to know where Abbotsford is first? I'm not anything special, but I would be willing to try to help for parts if you need.

My idea for your situation is do everything you can with help from friends, members of your parish etc., guys really enjoy working for a good cause. Your car can serve as a tool to bring folks together to serve those in need, let the car be a poster-child for what you're doing for the community. I would think once the word gets out you'll have no trouble coming up with parts, and sweat labor for your project, good luck, and may the LORD bless you HAMB BROTHER. Restore the car, Rat is not cool, unless you're a rat..

Welcome and good luck with the build. There is a special rust killer you should put on first so it wont further rust. I can't remember what it is called however.

Abbotsford is in British Columbia an hour outside Vancouver.

Do a search for 'rat rod' here and you'll understand. Round here, rat rod is synonymous with POS, and I'm sure that's not what you're after.

I had ALOT of rust issues on mine. If it is rusted through I cut and replaced the panel with 18gauge cold rolled steel...gets pricey and you need welder. For the not so bad areas I sanded as much off as I could, blew it with a hose, then used this spray called Rust Doctor. It stops the rust from becoming worse and also makes a sort of latex coating that you can paint over without having to prime it...saves a step. Pretty awesome stuff, but messy. Wear gloves or you hands will turn black ;)

I don't think this is the place to get advice on "ratting it out". You won't find to many experts on that here, but if your looking for some good advice to get it looking nice an on a budget, there's a lot of guys here that can help you with that.

Welcome. Used POR on mine, that stuff work great. Don't get it on you, you will be wearing it to a few services if you do!
