Earlier today I went and got a "new" defroster blower motor for my car. The original one in my car was real clean, but it had seized up at some point before I owned it so it drew current but didn't spin.

I pulled the new one out of another '55 New Yorker, it had some rust on the fan cylinder but spun freely and when I touched the appropriate wires to my car's battery it spun perfectly.

But for some reason when I hook it up it spins all the time, even though there's no key in the ignition and the switch is set to "Off" too. When I took the motor out of the donor car I just snipped off the ground wire since it would have been a huge pain to unscrew it... I spliced on the ground connector from my old motor and I can't see how I could have gotten them mixed up.

But it doesn't seem to matter because I tried reversing the connectors and it's STILL on no matter what, which baffles me. The car still has the 6-volt positive ground system, also.

Can anyone help me out? I'm sick of wiping off my fogged-up windshield and want to get this fixed fast!

Want it fixed fast? Toggle switch.

Bah, I don't want ANOTHER band-aid toggle switch... I guess it'd do for now though.

Toasted relay? My first guess without diggin into it.

I would just run another wire back to the fuse block. If your super lazy, you could wire it right to the coil. That would be super ghetto cheese death rod style!

What relay would it be? Something built into the switch itself? Before I took out the original seized motor it seemed like it'd work fine juduging by the ammeter. No draw at "off", slight draw at "low", more draw at "high". The heater motor switch and defroster motor switch are the same part, basically, they're both powered via the fuel gauge wire and the motors themselves are basically the same (only difference is that the heater motor has a wider fan on it).

Also, I don't think there's a fuse block on the car... my dad suggested that the "connectors" that a lot of accesories use to plug into the wiring harness are some kind of non-replaceable fuse, but I have no idea.

My 55 Desoto had no fuse box either. It did use some fusible links, which are wires that burn into like a fuse. If they go then it cuts power. You may want to check your actual switch. Also I just re-wired my whole car and switched it to 12V. I don't remember my fuel gauge powering the fan switches. I think mine came right off of the key switch or amp meter.

I figured it out...apparently the a wire for what must have been the glove box light or something had fallen down onto a hot relay, so as soon as I grounded it it started going. Ohwell, problem solved http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I actually assumed they would have been powered directly through the ammeter too, but the shop manual says it goes through the fuel gauge first.
