View Full Version : Waddaya get done this weekend?
My wife did me a great favour by visiting her sister for a few days, so I had the whole weekend to do what I liked.
I got stuck into the Pop, making new rear legs for the X-member, new front legs for same, incorporating the tranny mount, and today I made up an exhaust system, dumping just in front of the rear wheel. Will post pics tomorrow when my camera batteries are recharged.
So what did you fellas get done?
Mart.

Started my garage building project. The chainsaw gang came over, brought along a 50 Ton truck crane, and took down 7 large oak trees. Now my yard looks like a sawmill. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gifLotsa really big logs, and sawdust everywhere http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tore my 331 hemi most of the way down. Need to soak the pistons now for a few days to get them out.Took the rocker assemblies and heads off..took the oil pan and pump off. Probably tear the front of the engine apart next weekend and try to get the pistons and crank out. Then it's off to the engine shop for magnafluxing. I have my fingers crossed. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

trailered the 54 chev truck cab and doors to the stripper (chemical-type not nude-type). and disassembled everything else, used two full cans of pb blaster (good stuff for removing rusty bolts), labeled everything, took a ton of photos so I can get it back together.

I cut off the rockers on the Merc, and once again contemplated on how much of a channel I should/shouldn't do. I have this sneaky feeling that a channel on this chassis isn't really neccesary, the ride height of the naked body setting on the frame is about what I would expect it to be. I am worried that if I channel it (even 2 inches), that by the time all the rest of the sheetmetal/interior/etc. is in place, the car will sit too low to be able to drive. I am considering air bags, but their price is WAY too prohibitive right now. I hate the ride of cut coils...so, basically, I cut the rockers off, and sized things up. I found out the driver's side rear coil spring sags one inch compared to the passenger side. The broken/rewelded driver's lower seat frame and this saggy rear coil lead me to believe that some real fatso had this car (the town car) at one time! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I got lots of little stuff done on Faye...
I replaced the dome light cover and got the dome light working again. Then we put seatbelts in the front seats so my 6 year old can join us for rides. Dad put his beautiful Dodge Lancer hubcaps on Faye and they look so good I'm keeping my skirts off. The only mechanical thing I needed to do was change out the gasket on the valve cover and that was a quick job.
Mostly, I spent time driving because the weather here was amazing. Sunny and warm with the fall leaf show in full tilt.

Not so much car stuff, but at least it ain't packing.
Got some tie-downs added to the floor of my new toybox.
Along with moving the roadsters I gotta move the shop as well.
Figured two tie-downs at each end weren't gonna do it.
Did a few other little details to it as well.
Wasn't quite like building stuff for the hot rods, but it sure beat doing stuff in the house.
Besides, any time spent in the garage is a good time.
Right?
Right....

Sat. I went over to help DV8 clean and organize his shop. Others were asked to help but they were no shows. Today we went to the swap where I got an open drive banjo, 4 16" 1940 wheels, a 28-9 firwall and other bits and pieces. A good weekend indeed.

Installed the new radiator in my '36. Got one of my seats back from the trimmer. Unfortunately, he moved the mounts about two inches (Who knows why) so it won't bolt in. Too bad, it really looks good. I'll call him tomorrow. Wayno

Worked some more on the floor pans on the 39. Cleaned the welding bench off. Mowed the grass/leaves for the last time. Painted a truck cap for my buddy's dad. Got fisheyes for the 1st time in years, WTF?? Tradin the paint work for a Grizzly metal band saw...sweeeeeeet!!
Picked up my new front suspension parts, sorted through them, played golf, came home and looked at the parts again, took em out of the boxes and scattered over the floor.
Tomorrow, go to the welding shop and get my bottle filled.
Looks like the 47 will be on all fours some time this week.

It isn't even that long a trip in a horse and buggy from Central Ohio!
I wedged some wood in the doors of the mustang to keep the passinger's door glass up. Same thing with the driver's side quarter window glass. I'm not gonna mess with any regulators until spring! Besides, I think I have an idea on using volvo power window units instead of the stock junk...

Saturday I picked up a 51 F-1 frame. It's complete except for brakes and already painted really nice gloss black. I got a box complete with tailgate and fenders, it's a little rough but easily fixable. I paid 500.00 for the hole package. Not a great deal but not to bad.
Best wishes to all of you in California.

I didn't really get anything done that I wanted to but I guess it was pretty productive weekend.
I finally figured out what was wrong with the "Pro Built" mill in a friends Stude. I guess we'll snag that bugger out and build him another.
Dropped the gas tank in the Galaxie and cleaned it out (hopefully the last time) and built a NASCAR style pickup for it. And switched out my cheap electric fuel pump for good (new) mechanical.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to work on the F-Truck this week. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Friday - Found my 46 glass was delivered, took a while to open and fondle it. Went to mall with GF, almost walked into Hulk Hogan.
Saturday - Got some culture, all the museums in St. Pete were free.
Sunday - Dug out the Christmas stuff and all that entails, scrubbed the FL green mold off the Burro, looks great, glad I painted it with boat hull paint 4 years ago. Found my set of 13" Port-O-Walls, gonna install them tonight along with some Corvair wire wheel covers for it, kinda fits the look. Pics later this week.

FRIDAY: Closed on our brand new house at around 6:00 and then went over there and handed out candy to the kiddies. We didn't have anything in the house except the Model A, two lawn chairs, a small TV and a candy bowl! Pretty cool!
SATURDAY: Moved the '37 over to the house along with a bunch of boxes of JUNK. Gotta throw most of that shit away
SUNDAY: Went and picked up a Model A coupe body, late 30s front axle with bones, 2 rear fenders and a bunch of springs. I can't wait to start on this one!
