I robbed the headlites and wheels years ago. Yes, that is a 392 Hemi with an Isky 280 hydraulic cam, and forged Jahns pistons

So what are your plans for it now?
Too cool to be in storage.

Awesome... love to see that on the road some day. The only thing I've got in storage is actual dust

Can you tell us more about the flip up front end? Most have part of the fender left back on the body, yours doesn't.
With those wheels, that would be a hell of a sleeper!

First I cut off the fender but it didnt leave enuff room to get up close to the engine, so I welded the end of the fender back on. I used the motor/pump and hydraulic cylinders out of a Fairlane convertible to open the tilt front. When I bought the car in 1967, it was original with the flathead. I drove the car for several years, replaced the engine with a rebuild from Fred Jones Authorized Ford Factory Rebuilds out of Oklahoma City. I came to hate the flathead V-8s because of constant replacing of parts. Waterpumps, radiator, generators, regulators, starters, steenkin 6 volt system, I didnt like the distributor under the fan and the bottom radiator hoses were hard to deal with. To this day, I find it hard to understand why anyone would willingly submit themselves to the torture of running a flathead V-8. Specially when we have so many better choices. I got a 66 Chrysler that had been hit in the back and I used the radiator, 318 engine, trans and rear axle, also the complete A/C heater assembly under the dash along with the master cylinder, and power brake booster. Later I got the Hemi and pushbutton trans. I added a console with flip switches for everything. The console also has jacks for 4 sets of headphones. I removed the raingutters, rounded the door corners, and removed the outside handles on the rear suicide doors. It was a fun car that I drove for 14 years. It lost second gear and I parked it because I wanted to begin work on my grandfathers 1937 Ford truck.

Am I the only person in the world that never has trouble with a flathead?

I love it. Do you have any pics of the interior (or what's left)? How'd you get the pushbutton trans to work?

I'm betting that one needs brakes too http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Cool old car, a sleeper is what I would call it. I'm sure there was pleanty of new muscle car owners that were surprized when you kept up or "Wooped UP" on them.
Ok, so you drug it out...now what are you going to do with it?

Heres a few interior pictures. Back when I did the work, I did the best I knew how, but felt my work was crude. I got the very nice high back buckets from the junkyard. They were available, they were green, YUCK! but you work with what you have, so the interior was green.

Sorry, I should have rotated the pic. Customs were dechromed and cleaned of trim and ornaments so I stripped all the stainless off the body. Mercurys had a LOT more body trim than Fords. I took it all off and made the dash simple too. I kept the Mercury on the glovebox.

In this pic the 61 Chrysler speedo, the tach, CB radio and ignition switch are out of the dash. Thats a Grant wood steering wheel. Now, I would not put a square dash in a round car, but back then..... I have an original dash for it too.

This shot shows more of the console. The dark cover opens for storage, the lite on the back matches the lites I put in each door. When the car door opens, the interior lites come on. I added a switch so the lites could be turned on with the doors closed. I added another flip switch to keep the lites off if the doors were open but I didnt want the drain on the battery. Another flip switch was for headlites. One does taillites only-----turn off the taillites and the black car disappears on a dark night when the cops are after ya! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I had 100 hours in wiring the console only. This pic also shows the original 58 Chrysler pushbuttons used to shift the automatic. It stayed in low or second until I hit the next button. It was a lot of fun. It was kind of a sleeper, plain, black, but it would really run. I could tell you stories.......

Your pics got me feeling a little homesick. But I had to let mine go to fund the truck I'm on now. I love looking at yours!

manolcars what a sweet ol Merc. it should belong to me http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Then I would probably just figure out a way to ruin it.
I don't think I would even blow it off, just get it running, and let the wind take the dust. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
