There are way too many hues of dark blue... post some pics and of your favorite and what color it is.

here is one from me
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=568&pictureid=22190

my wife loves this one.

I like dark blues with shiny metal and red accents. ( you can tell by my avatar )

some may know, but others might not.. I was going to paint my truck
a green color in memory of my dads shop from the 60s "joes texaco" he had a green 61 f100.. mine is a 65..

well my dad tells me today he thought the green was " sick sailor green"
and that blue is what he would paint it... so now my wife, mother, and dad love this dark metallic blues...

eh and blue is my favorite color. but I never thought of it as a cool color on cars and trucks. Hoping you guys can prove me wrong.. and hopefully in a way that wont break the bank.

post away.

Thanks

A big Yes on the '56 Dodge blue color.
My closest friend back in high school days painted both his customized '58 Impalas (one coupe, one convertible) that color.

My other favorite is Wedgwood Blue, a 2000 Ford Taurus color with a bunch of metallic in it.
In low light it's practically black and in sunlight the metallic in it explodes.
My '53 Lincoln is shot in that color. Love it!

saw a 50's pickup at a local show that had a stunning blue on it. Looked black until the light caught a curve, then it was definitely a blue/purple. the guy said it was a Pontiac color from the 60's (50% of me wants to say midnight blue but now i'm doubting that)

It looked black but fired up to look like the previously shown HOK Majestic Blue- almost like a pearl effect, except it was panel-wide.

I saw an S-10 at a show last weekend with an awsome blue. It was a black base with blue pearl over it. Looked black in all light except direct sunlight. The high spots where the sun shone were a brilliant sparkly blue.

This is a Ford blue. I really need to ask to body shop what year and name, I picked it form paint chips. I believe its form the late 90's.

These were taken in the evening. The paint has a lot of burgundy in it and blue if from pearl, so it turns more purple when the sun starts to set. I need to take some pictures during the day now that I have it all back together again, but here is what the paint looks like in bright sunlight.

Some good hues

I like the blue with a good flame job.. or pinstriping done right...

Ive got a shop logo i want to put on mine that has the earllier

Texaco wings in it... done in medium red.

That coupled with a red interior I think would be pretty traditional... and cool.

I have a feeling this will be an option for me 'till I can afford a more Glamourous paint job... basically as soon as its straight I will shoot it with this to get it one color... instead of the common flat black...

its supposed to be Washington Blue but i doubt it. Stan Betz mixed to match some paint when i louvered the hood and i know its got green and a bunch of other colors in it,cause i watched when he did it. Its a great color, changes depending on the light. At night it looks very dark and in bright sunlight its a medium blue.

We are nearly on the same boat... except mine likely wont be straight enough for a really nice deep black/blue... who knows though. It might happen.. Im even leaning towards... eh dont shoot me... a mixture bewteen a semigloss or matte black with a blue... so it will have an older not so shiny look... and the paint is cheap.. lol. I know a guy here who painted his a deep red... it was mixed rustoleum flat black and gloss red... granted it wasnt a show stopper but it has a unique look... not good or bad... but he only spent 16 bucks for the paint. been on the truck for a few years.. doesnt look much different than it did when it was painted.. not as rich.. a few scratches.

dont know if I will opt for that cheap or not... but it would get me by till I could afford a 2k paint job... and its not flat black with red wheels. it would be for awhile anyway dark blue with black wheels...

I wondered about that too.... not necessarily the pearl.. but
Base of black and paint some almost candy or thinned blue on top so the
black shines through... I saw it done before... but cant remember all the steps involved.

Just a question on "Washington Blue". Did it vary quite a bit over the years it was used on Ford production lines?

rodncustom, Your Dad does NICE work!

While trying to pick a color for mine I rounded up several "Washington Blue" color codes we mixed about 6 different codes to actually see what they were and they varied ALOT from almost Black to about what RodnCustoms looks like.

Just curious what the texture of the paint is... I saw one recently done and it had a bumpy rough texture about it... looked good from a distance.. up close it wasnt very impressive.. yours looks to be done better.. A painter told me that he has done the look with just using basecoat with hardner... laying it on smooth and wet... and when it dries it has a satin sheen that will hold up.

he also said to just use the shop line. granted I dont really see a big diff between shopline and premium... just seems like premium has a different flake.

I'm all about ford purity... but, havent found a ford color that grabs ya other than the candy red that is popular on mustangs...

Hey, check out the blue that is on the Ford F-150 Raptor... that blue is almost liquid in person...super deep...

Sorry, the only pictures of it that I have seen are on the Ford website. It is damn tough to photograph.

ShopLine is 100 bucks a gallon, Premium or top shelf PPG is 325... same paint, same amt of flake...
Texture is smooth and what the painter told you is true. Mine is done the same way, but I wanted mine not to "Sheen".(that's why 1/2 gallon of flattener was used...Also Had a little Pearl added to the mix as well.).Good body work is the big thing on dark colors............

I have always liked dark blue.

The strips on my old car are actualy black with blue peral over the entire car. This made the strips go from black to mid/bright blue.

Packard Blue (go figure, huh...) is about as dark and elegant as you can imagine. You can't just make a dark blue and use it. All Packards were sprayed black to final inspect the sheetmetal before paint, at least through 1947. Packard Blue (yes that's the color name) is all Prussian Blue tint in the clear base of the paint from back in the day. Prussian Blue is a very concentrated transparent tint that picks up the black below it and adds a depth well beyond what you might imagine. To get there today there's a modern color (Chrysler Nightwatch Blue) that was also made up of mainly transparent tints and is about as close as it gets but that was lacquer. Some testing would need to be done mixing some 1/2 pints to get it right in BC/CC. There's also a Ford/Mercury color called Midnight Blue from the late 70s used on the T-Birds and Cougars of the day. You may remember those dark blue cars with the saddle colored tops and body side trim (yuk!) but the blue was a dead bang for Packard Blue if sprayed over a black base. Too hard to show in photos...looks black. Needs to be seen in person to 'feel' it.

My favorite and was the original plan for my car but decided on a different direction. The codes for this are Fed Standard numbers FS-35042 or FS-35045 (those are flat colors). The gloss colors are FS-15042 or FS-15045. The color was called "Dark Sea Blue" or "Night Blue".

You can find other variations of the colors on this website:

I am painting my 1934 Plymouth Nason blue code DS016IF it is a spectrum color that is supposed to be early Packard blue.Nason is owned by Dupont but Nason paint is much cheaper.I wanted a non metallic dark blue.We did a spray out and it looks perfect.I was going to paint it basecoat clear but am now considering single stage to save on materials.

The same thing holds true for the Federal Spec Dark Sea Blue as it does for Washington Blue. Lots of folks say that is their color, but place any 10 cars or aircraft together in a lineup and you'll have 10 different colors. Drives me insane.
