"hi kids,i just realized i can make more money by including these new-fangled "ratrodz"tm in my show! c'mon down,it's fun,it's easy, and it's only $40 to park your car inside so i can charge $15 a head for people to look at'em"
Lets add to my statement. While I think TRADITIONAL RODS would be fun to see in a show, I think the manner this guy and the Autorama guy went abot it are WRONG. Would have been much kosher to just do like Blackie Gejeian does and just ask around and do some invites. See a guy at anevent with a TRADITIONAL hot rod and say "Hey, I happen to run this indoor car show, I would really like you to bring that car." After the first year and the word gets out that there were x amount of cool cars, others would show or, be invited.
This novelty BS about lets make a Rat Rod section of the show only helps foster sterotypes, bad ones.
For the record, I do go to indoor shows, hell, I work our rod shop both at our local indoor. I like the idea of getting more real hot rods in them, but you guys need to get a little more creative and not just jump on some bandwagon because you saw it in The Rodders Journal.

First I rarely get into this shit, but Scott man, you kind of asked for it there didn't ya? And this is pretty tame. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
If you're familiar enough with the board to know it exist, rather someone told you about it or just came across it with a google for "rat rods" (bad move that), then you can understand it's like walking into someone's garage unannounced without even having beers in your hand.
I for one am glad to have this back. It's the only car show I attend. And that's because by mid-winter you need a fix, even if the lights and mirrors blind you. And I simply find the faux fur special to touch when the owner isn't looking.
So will you have a corral setup with a neon or lettered sign labeled "rat rods"? I wanna steal it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've never been able to understand why WE have to pay money to park OUR cars so that someone ELSE can come look at them?
I can see ten bucks or so, but 25, 35, 40, or more, come on!
I may sound like a cheap bastrard, and I'm not saying that i'm not, but I could'nt give a ratass about a dash plauqe, or goodie bag or what ever. Maybe a t-shirt, and you can get them for 10 or 15 bucks right? So if you charge folks to come in then that should cover the price to rent the place. Unless ofcourse your an outfit like GreedGuys, and then you can afford any damn thing!

Thank you very much. I am Scott Bullock owner of Showcase Cutom Auto in St. Louis. I am putting on the St. Louis World of Wheels Jan. 14th-16th. I have been a Hot Rodder all of my life. It's not my first rodeo. I love all cars. The guys on this forum did not invent Traditional Hot Rodding, OUR DADS DID. I would love to see some Traditional Hot Rods at the show this year and every year after that. I came here looking for some help. If you can give some, that would be great. If not I understand. Thanks for listning. Scott

By "guys" are you lumping AutormaBob into this "sterotyped" catogory of "jumping on the bandwagon"?
FYI: it was die hard, hard core, traditional hot rodders that approached Championship Auto Shows and suggested they do it. It took alot of convincing on the part of the hot rodders for this to go down. The Detroit Autorama has always been a very shiny paint car type of show. Only the best of the best need apply. These guys jump on NO bandwagon, they set the standard, the very high standard that the Detroit Autorama has had for over 50 years. This part of Autorama, "Extreme", is a trial If it's not successful, if it's too much hassle, it won't happen again.
Where else will you see, at an INDOOR car show, over 100 "rat rod" styled rides? These are just the ones on the lower level. The shiny painted, traditional hot rods and customs will still be mixed in with the others on the upper level. Not to mention the huge Cavacade of Customs on the upper level, that Chuck Miller "sponsors". If you saw the photos from last year you know how many cool cars there were. It was a great show before this and can only get better with this addition.
It was suggested to AutoramaBob to do an intro on the HAMB and post the info regarding the show, so those that are interested in attending can get info directly from the source and Bob can get feedback directly from the traditionalists. He did an intro just like he was informed to do.
What better place then the HAMB to get the country's best traditional hot rod and customs, and why have to wait a year and make it an "invite" only first when there are so many willing to participate now? My gut feeling is this is going to fly so good that there will be far more people on the lower level checking out the traditional rides then on the first floor checking out the streetrods. 700 cars on the first floor, 200 cars on the lower level, it's a win-win situation for eveyone, exhibitors, general public, and show promotors alike.
Will it be smooth sailing the first year?? Who knows, probley not. But the kinks will get worked out, everyone will have an awesoem hot rod weekend in March with lots of cool cars and cooler friends. What could possibly be wrong with that??
$15.00 for 12 hours worth of hot rod "entertainment". If this is outta your price range, or if you just happen to think this is too much money, well stay home. But don't piss on eveyone elses party. $50 to enter your hot rod for the weekend too much for ya, again, stay home. $50.00 gets two people into the show for 3 full days of activities PLUS another full day during set up. $6.25 per day, per person. Doesn't get any more affordable then that.
"This novelty BS about lets make a Rat Rod section of the show only helps foster sterotypes, bad ones." BULLSHIT, Your crazy. What bad sterotype can come from folks seeing these cars up close and being able to talk to the builders? A kid with his dad checking out the cars, kids excited cuz he's seen cars like these on TV now he's seeing them up close. Can even touch them cuz the owners cool about stuff like that. How many of these guys will be letting little kids sit in their cars? All the ones that I know. A little kid comes up to my car and is checking it out, I open the door for him and stay hop in. So do all my friends. That ain't happening upstairs witht he shiney painted cars, but I'll bet you it will be happening all the time on the lower level. These kids that will be attending these shows will be talking about and rememebering these cars forever and will be saying to themselves, "hey, if that guy could build it so can I." Fostering "bad" sterotypes??? You've got to be kidding.....
You guys that are jumping down these promotors throats for bringing the type of cars you like to their shows just crack me up. Your never satisfied, are you?

I will add a big AMEN to what Denise just said and add one thing:When people decry the price of admission to one of these events(myself included at times)they often don't have a clue as to the expense involved in putting on one of these extravaganzas.Just as an example does anyone know how much it costs just to RENT a venue such as Cobo Hall?Without going into specifics,I can tell you that a week's rental(and for a show like that it is a minimum)will set you back over seven figures(that's a digit with six zeroes after it)and that is basic rent not including services(try to get ANYTHING done without utilizing union help)and then on top of that an advertising budget that would probably keep a small country solvent for a month.Add to that the gallons of antacid medicine required for a thousand and one problems that always seem to surface even though you think they're under control.
I guess what it boils down to is:If you don't like it don't go;no one's holding a knife to your throat to participate. This will probably generate another shitstorm but that's my take on it.

Ray, You've just said a mouthful about the people who put on these shows and "some" of the agravation they go through to do so. I for one find it curious when someone complains about something that hasn't even taken place yet. Now for you fair weather guys who get to drive your hot (rat) rods year around a car show probably isn't a big deal to you, probably more of an annoyance. For those of us who have to put our toys away for 3-4 months every year and hope a 4 wheel drive will get us to work, it's a different matter. For over 30 years I've looked forward to Cobo each winter and on the worst year felt it was worth going, if for no other reason than a break from snowplowing and staying indoors. It has also served as a shot in the arm for my projects which seem to suffer from the doldrums of mid-winter. I've usually come back from there and worked like a mad scientist for at least a couple of weeks.
The interesting thing to me is that this board is supposed to be made up of "car guys (and gals)" and there is a continual bitch going on about the elements that make up our hobby (obsession).
My suggestion is to get your head out of your ass and participate or sign up for a basket weaving course at the local Junior College.
Frank
Regardless of who approached whom about traditional styled cars in these shows, I find it funny that TRJ covers a show in California that featured HAMBers cars in a separate room last winter and now two rather large shows decide to do the same???????????? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, coincidence? Irony? Cosmic alignment of the planets? I think not. Bandwagon? I think so.
Race and Josh are working behind the scenes, that cool, also another post.
Like I said I go to indoor shows, I like to see traditional cars. But the fact remains that these guys should have been covering traditional type cars all along. Notice I did not say shitboxes and rat-rods?
What they are doing IS jumping on a bandwagon! Idont entirely mind it either. What I do mind is the way they view trad cars as cool now and 5 years ago real hot rods were red headed stepchildren so to speak. Ask Axle about being shunned at the HRR one year and being asked to be the main "act" the next!?
Lighten up, he barged into this room un-announced, so I gave him some "input" that wasnt asked for. Fair trade I believe.
