I've just aquired a 57 Belair 4 dor hardtop. The car its self is in great condition. However the previous owners put a 350 SB in that was "rebuilt". I do think it actually was rebuilt. The engine looks really clean and the freeze plugs are nice and shiny. My problem however is it has very suddenly started spraying oil from what seems like the fuel pump area. Also a very loud clanking, like something it hitting something else. I can't see where the oil is actually comming from, and haven't pulled anything off yet. I am just wondering if you all have any ideas of where this oil and noise are comming from?

Thanks,

Pilot

You need to do an INTRO on this board and then you can participate with questions. it is the accepted way.someone will help you after you do- just tell some about you your history your cars etc......you know.....

Does the forum registration process actually tell you that you should post an intro when you register? The only reason I knew that I needed to was because I was referred by another messageboard and it was mentioned. Considering how many posts seem to be devoted to telling people to post intros it would probably be a good idea to have it.

Sorry... I feel like I've been on the board for a while. My good friend is on here and I've been vicariously posting through him. (Deyomatic, 55 Ford). Been into cars for about 5 years. Finally am at the point where I can afford to actually do something. I'm 26, a pilot with ASA and am really just getting into the old cars. I started with 4 cyl stuff and am now experimenting with different builds on chevy SBCs. Up until now my oldest car has been a 73 Belair, but I have been looking for a 50s car for a while.
Currently I reside in TX, Arlington area, and have been here for about 1.5 yrs.

sound like a timing chain stretched eneough to let the chain wear a hole thru the side of the timing cover.

look at the cover below the water pump where it attaches to the block.

I just talked to him a bit ago, he said he really doesn't think the leak is coming from the timing chain area, but he'll get a better look tomorrow, bright and early during the daylight.

Much better to look at it in the dark after consuming mass quantities.....be sure to do it with the engine running. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif(smiley face)

Thanks for the info. I'll post again when I start taking things off. I was just looking for a target to shoot for. Hell if I have to I'll just take the damn thing apart. But I'd rather just it be an easy fix! :-)

If you're in the Arlingron area shoot me a PM and bring it over, maybe we can find it.

Tyler, this is the guy (and his wife) that was with me when we met at Hamilton's little BBQ show in Carolton (I think).

Sudden spewing of oil from fuel pump area= Hole in block.

Loud clanking noise, like something hitting = Thrown rod.

Torquewrench?

Thats my take on the situation.

10-4 Deo,
I didn't realize he was from my neighborhood.

I does sound kinda catastrophic, not like a simple oil leak from a gasket.

He's in the process of building up a SBC at the moment, so he isn't terribly concerned with this motor. I guess the body is near perfect with the exception of one dent, so he wanted to drive it until the other SBC was done and slap that in. From the sounds of it, he won't be too upset if this engine is shit. Hell, if worst comes to worst, he won't have any problem getting a running junkyard SBC for short money.

Well, to whom it may concern...He figured out what the problem was. Half assed-ness on the previous owner. He just bought the car yesterday, so he's in the process of finding all of the little half assed things that have been done over the past 45 years.
I guess, the oil was tranny fluid coming out of one of the cooler lines, that had been cobbed together somehow, so that when he started it, the pressure in the line blew it apart, and the clanging was the metal cooler line getting attacked by the fan. So, he's elbow deep in grease now, trying to get this thing on the road. My guess is that the fluid is OLD, or the lighting was bad to not be able to tell if it were red.

Fluid was defenatly old AND it was dark. Car is up and running now, mostly no leaks. Thanks for the help all. Now I need to sort out all of the electrical things. Car has about half of the original A/C and there are wires everywhere.
