Anybody know where to score a headlight switch for a 1954 Chev. Bel-air? Also...what's the best way to get the old one out, it seems to be a pretty tight squeeze under there. I keep getting an electrical burning smell and then my headlights/dash lights will go out. The smell seems to come from the switch. The wiring between the switch and the headlights is ALL new. any and all info will be helpful. Thanks fellas.

Im mixed up-are you askin how to make space to work on it or how it comes apart/and out?
You know about the little pushbutton dealie on the switch itself- [that you press] to release the knob and its shaft?Right? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah...I'm askin' how to take out the old one to replace it and also where I can get a new one. Does it come out from behind the dash? Is there an alan screw in the front? Any info is helpful.
Many thanks,

buy this one and just replace the knob with yours. instead of the new one it comes with. light switch. (http://www.nationalchevyassoc.com/Default.aspx?tabid=104&productid=4331&txtsearch=li ght%20switch&list=1&sortfield=0)

Pull the knob out until it stops.
Reach behind and depress the push button near the top rear of the switch itself.
Pull the knob all the way out and unscrew the retaining bezel from the front.
Done.

You should be able to get a new 6 volt switch at any GOOD parts store. I got a Borg Warner unit for not too much money. You can make a tool to take the bezel off by grinding down a socket so you have two tabs that slip into the holes in the face. It's a tight squeeze underneath the dash, and chances are the wires aren't going to go to the same positions on the new switch, so it gets pretty cramped. Not a bad job, though. I don't know if the old knob will fit the new switch, mine didn't, but then again, my knob was loose on the old switch - one reason for replacing it.
