pictures are bad (phone) but the car is an old race/lake car 32 frame, 1961 fiberglass 27' shell, solid dana 44 axle, air craft seat frames, I put in a cosworth 4 with mild speed parts and tempest t-10 tranny, hand clutch, hand shift, the whole car stands just under your knees, and you sit way down in it

I don't see any Cosworth Vega engine. The engine in the first series of pics looks like a Ford 2.3 liter engine.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/image_uploads/659420-Image017.jpg
It's a SOHC with a stamped steel valve cover. It might be a cross flow and the aluminum intake with a downdraft carb looks just like a Pinto-Mustang II intake based on the extra bosses on the front of the intake.
I couldn't find a decent pic of the intake that wasn't 20 inches wide, but here's a shot of a naked Ford 2.3.
http://www.crustworld.co.uk/sierra/techspec/images/other/pinto1.jpg
And a Cosworth for comparison.

Just for the record, I don't think Cosworth made ANY non-DOHC engines.

His engine is the NON-Cosworth Vega four...the SOHC version. Lo-power, less reliable. You can tell by the slanted valve cover.
That car desereves better than Vega power. C'mon man..
Killer car tho...

Curbspeed, those Cosworth Vegas were made for about three years in the mid '70s. The Cosworth engines were one of the biggest DOHC 4 cylinder engines available for a long time. They became very popular with mini sprints untill water cooled Volkswagens became cheaper and more powerful. These days there are a few dozen engines that look similar but put out more power and are easier to find and service.
Just off the top of my head I can think of some very popular American market engines that put out more power and are easier to find. For starters there is the BMW E30 M3 engine that was stuffed into every first generation M3 along with a nice transmission, the Nissan KA24DE that came in most '90s 240SX and some late '90s trucks, and you have to adapt it to a rear drive transmission, but all those SAAB engines in the 9000 series cars seem to be bulletproof. Even the new Ford Zetec and GM Ecotec look a lot like these but seem to have some plastic parts that cant be removed and the Quad Four has it's own problems, but there's a few kooks that seem to have (expensive) solutions to making it look good in a RWD car.
If you want to get away from the flat-top look, and want the Lotus-Ford engine style, there are another couple dozen four cylinder engines that fit the bill starting with the Mazda 323-MX5 engine.
FWIW - Entire, abused and unoriginal Cosworth Vegas seem to go for cheap money on ebay. If I was in the market for one, that's where I'd start.

I cant post any pics right now ( we are painting the room ), but do a Google search for Cosworth MAE Formula 3.
It was the engine to beat in Formula 3 for a long time, and I believe some of those 1000cc pushrod engines were modified by closing off the original intake ports and putting in new downdraft ones.
I think you are right about the Pinto engine though.
(Cosworth made a version of that engine too...)
Edit ,
Scotch, I had not seen that you already identified the engine when I made my post...

Hi Chris!
Yeah, I know the SBC but I was talking about the first couple of pics he put up.
Looks like a regular Vega engine to me.
Could be a good little powerplant for such a lite car even in the single cam version. Sleeving the cylinders and adding the usual bolt on stuff would give great performance with low weight.
I had a couple of those "oilers" for winter hacks...found them to have good power and when the automatic kicked down...I think they would rev to around 6 grand or better before they would upshift again! Never seemed to hurt them either...It was like getting a kick in the ass! hahaha
Not a real handsome looking powerplant, but its different...and who cares if a mod smokes a little anyway? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
