View Full Version : OT- Saw Dick Dale Last Night, Totally Stoked!
I saw Dick Dale last night at a little club here in Phoenix. My ticket was a late birthday present from my best pal Jim. Man, What a blast! Dick is the man! Phenominal music, the company of some good pals, hot chicks to eyeball and great atmosphere. I did a lot of twisting and my interpretation of the "Surfer Stomp". Hoo doggie's, what fun!
Dick signed the cover of the original, 1962 "Surfers Choice" LP that I've owned for 20 years or more. He signed my buddy Rick's surfboard and the dashboard of the '55 Pontiac that the board was sitting on top of. I should have asked him to sign the dashboard of my '57 Ranch Wagon, but I blew it (Doh!).
Man, what a great night. I was and still am totally stoked!

Hey - the Dick Dale website says he's playing a New Years Eve Gala with guitar prodigy 12 yr old Jimmy Dale. That's so cool I remember that kid sitting in the sound booth wearing these huge earmuffs - couldn't take his eyes off his old man on stage. I hoped he would follow in his dads footsteps.
Dick Dale rocks. I saw him a couple of years ago at a club next to a Dunkin Donuts. He has a wireless transmitter and he walked over to get a donut. He was playing the guitar with one hand and eating a donut as he walked back in.
He's louder than hell too.

He did the same one of the three times I saw him - plugged in the wireless, played amidst the crowd for a while, walked out onto High St. (Cols, OH) and played out there for a while, then came back in. No donut, though.
He's great, too, in that he'll always stay after the show's over and sign autographs for everybody who wants one. He talks about some crazy environmental/spiritual stuff, too.

I've seen him play twice... last summer was on of those times...
Great!!
I might post some pics later..
No matter how down you get, certain things in life can never be taken from you. Like your memories or your desires or your favorite music and Dick Dale is definately some of my favorite music.
Mike, where was he? I don't get out much.... I think I would have paid money just to see you do the stomp and/or twist!
I gotta I say love Dick Dale, but my favorite geetar slinger's Link Wray. There's just something so bad ass about Wray, he's kinda scary.

Jeem, he was at the Rhythm Room. I'm surprised you didn't hear about it, Elpolacko was there also. Whenever I'm watching someone play kick ass surf music, I usually gets ta twistin' and stompin' like a madman.
Dick Dale has always got a blistering drummer in tow too. Serious stamina these guys have! And that fender sound! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I agree with you there, Nads. Link Wray is my favorite also. My all time favorite song is Wray's original version of "Jack the Ripper". I've loved every version of that song that I've heard, but none can ever top the original.
Tony from the Cadillac Angels is one of my favorite guitarists. He is very much influenced by Link Wray. I saw the Cadillac Angels last month at the same club. Along with so many of there other songs, they played "Jack the Ripper", "Apache" (the Cad Angels do my favorite version of this one) and "Miserlou". Talk about a twistin' and a stompin', I was in reverb nirvana,
so-cheap has pictures to prove it.

Stoked is the right word!
I took my 27-year old kid, who's been learning guitar for 7 or 8 years, to see Dick at a small club in Lincoln, NE a few months back. He knew the name, but wasn't real familiar with the music. Man, it just kicked his butt!
A GREAT show, very "up close and personal", and tons of fun, even for this old greybeard. The guy is an amazing talent.

Yes I was, made it there to see one of my favorite local bands (Flathead) open up. Dick was truly amazing, I sat there in awe at just how easy he manipulated the guitar, drums, horn and playing the bass with drumsticks! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I just wonder who his guitar heros were.

I wondered about that too. I don't know if this is a clue, but at show I saw this year, his last song was an amazing rendition of Third Stone from the Sun. He's the king, that's for sure.

from his official home page "Being completely self taught, Dick Dale plays left handed upside down which was a result of holding the guitar left-handed. The strings became upside-down, chords are designed for right handed players making it very difficult for a left handed player unless he were to change the strings for a left handed guitar, something that Dale never did. "
dick plays left handed upside down, playing guitars strung for right handers with his left hand didnt restring the guitar either, he plays the chords technically backwards, jimi hendrix, restrung the guitar to play played upside down guitar also, used to love to watch dick play at shows, how odd is that? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I love his cover of Jimmi's "Third Stone", he finished with it last night too. I was reading the bio on MusicMatch and it was reffering to his influence on Jimmi, if you can belive it. About all it said was his family has an enormous ammount of talent and a penchant for the "exotic"!
Leaves alot unanswered, maybe I should have stuck around and asked.

One of the loudest live shows I've seen was Dick Dale at the now defunct Backstage in Ballard, WA. He was tossing melted guitar picks into the crowd while grabbing new ones from under his strat's pickgaurd, never stopped playing.
If any of you "Dickheads" want to hear a badass, land-speed cover of Dale'c "Mr. Eliminator", check out the Quadrajets. They were a kick-ass band from Alabama that split up in 2000.
Nads is right, though. Link Wray has got 'em beat in my book, as well. Talk about badass guitar tone. My old band used to end every set with a cover of "Rumble".

I caught that too, but he is playing a left handed guitar, strung right handed.
Side note, Greg Swanholm of the opening band is also left handed and plays a right handed guitar upsidedown. Watching him work looks uncomfortable as hell.

This pal of mine played upright bass in one of my favorite local bands, Blue Flame Combo. He was an amazing player, he's right handed but he plays his bass left handed with the strings put on backwwards, g-d-a-e, I couldn't figure that out in a million years. Man I miss that band.
The last time I saw Link Wray he had these two total dirtbag looking dudes backing him up. They were super young and super good. The bassist had only 3 strings on his guitar.
PS I went to see Deke Dickerson for the millionth time last time, he's still amazing, and he's still one of my favorite guys as a person. Sugarballs had a giant gong on stage.

Doesnt Link Wray live in Copenhagen, Denmark? I know the swedish band Bob Hund allways has him on their guestlist when they play there, but he never shows up.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Dick Dales drummer is Dusty Watson; -the best drummer I have ever seen. I swear he has 3 arms or something. Last time I saw Dick Dale he and the bassmann was more or less just doing their job behind the old man, but for everyone into surf, mr Watson needs to be checked out when he playes at full tilt in his other band; Slacktone: http://www.slacktone.com/
Sam Bolle from Agent Orange playes bass, while Dave Vronski from Jon & The Nightriders playes guitar. Right now they are pretty much the worlds best surfband in my book (where is Satans Pilgrims these days btw.)
Oh and "I only know Rocknroll" sounds hard and all, Manyolcars, but Dick Dale is a bit too important in Rocknroll history for your statement to be all true. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Man, I'd pay even MORE money to see ElPolacko shuckin' ana' jivin'!!
