View Full Version : Mating Fiberglass to steel (unholy marriage!) Question

If you have fiberglass fenders or grille shell on a steel car, is there a way to "erase" the seam with modern body fillers?

Maybe something with expansion properties that can be painted? If such a thing exists, could it be used for filling in a steel-to-steel seam in an area without too much flex?

Always looking for the easy way out,

I guess it depends on how big a seam you're talkin' about. There is a product out there just for that, used a lot on truck bodies, etc. I don't know any trade names, I just used to go into the paint department at the local Big A and ask for "seam sealer". It's kinda like caulk, you just fill the seam (not too huge) and smooth it out with a little spit on your finger (optional), and let it dry. If you run some tape to define the width of the seam you're making, it looks pretty good, if done right. it's also paintable.

Dave, I think you're begging for trouble. The expansion rates of the two materials is really different. It may not eat your lunch this week. It may not eat your lunch nest week. But, it will eat your lunch. Wayno

Dave, it's not a great idea.

But since you asked: 3M makes a 20 yard strip of "Flexible Strip Caulk" that is paintable. (Use a flex agent.) Eastwood sells it if you can't find it anywhere else.
