So my wife has an uber-sensitive schnoz. Anytime there's a hint of gas in el garage, she goes apey.
What can I do to minimize the scent of gas in our attached garage when I'm working on fuel related stuff?
Help!
PS-No, I'm not getting a new wife.

Maybe a 'draw fan' if you have a back or side door that points away from the house. Basically mounting a small box fan in the door (like a doggie door) to blow outwards. It's also handy ventilation for when you are painting in the garage.

They use Vanilla extract and water to paralyze the olfactory nerves on honey bees when they want to mix two hives. Honey Bees have exceptional Schnoz. It is how they keep out maurauding bees, by the smell of the offender. Maybe a vanilla scented deodorizer spray just inside the door to the garage will help keep her schnoz under control. If her olfactory nerve (smeller) isn't working she won't be offended by gas. BTW Gasoline is another Paralyzer of said nerve. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
activated carbon or "charcoal" should do the trick. you'll have to find a filter supply store, they'll know what you're lookin for, carbon is used for heavy duty air filteration etc. you'll have to build yourself a container to hold it, a good simple method is to use a 5 gallon bucket, drill it full of holes, lots of em! fill the bucket with the carbon, you could build it so there is just a layer of carbon around the outside, a few inches thick at least, then fit a fan to the opening of the bucket to draw air into it, it will eat up whatever odor plagues you.
you could build one setup for the garage, near the door or something, and one in the house.
don't ask how i know all this!

My wife of 34 years is exactly the same way. Hell, if I paint a part outdoors she can smell it. I built a seperate garage for me!!! I know that's pretty extreme,so I'd use a ventilation fan and maybe some bathroom spray. Also, get rid of clothing and used rags right away as they hold the smell.
If you show her your trying, maybe she'll ease up on you !! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Get one of those pott pourie pots and put something smelly in it. Try onions, garlic and maybe a little vinegar. She'll think you're either cooking in there or you've ordered take-out.

Tell her that her newest foo foo juice scent smells like "Old Lady". That will distract her from the smells of the garage. Also, I like to tell mine that the last stinky, greasy, and obnoxious hot rod I sold paid for her latest face lift (It really did). It's called the barter system.

To largely de-stink fuel related parts, takem outside, remove a plg or screw or two to drain gas, and drop into a can of mineral spirits. Swizzle and drain a couple of times, take back into garage and go to work.

As much as I like to work on cars and bikes, I really don't like the smell of gas either.
If you get gas on clothing or rags, it is tenacious and will not leave. To remedy this, rinse the offending fabric with a "Shout-Out" type spray and BABY OIL. This is an old household trick.

make sure there are no vents, or other obvious passages that the vapors can easily travel into the house...then think about installing an exhaust fan in the garage.
one that vents to the outside air.
alot of smells will cling to clothes...perhaps some coveralls that you can take off when entering the house will help.
or...get one of the ionic breeze air purifiers and put in inside the house. help kill the smells as they enter.
definately weatherstrip the door from the house to the garage.

Its takes a lot fuel to smell.. what kinds of things are you doing with fuel.. keep fuel in a good container and buy a storage cabinet.. can a carb create that much smell.. and how many gas tanks can you be missing with... are you cleaning parts with gas, if so, stop and use something else.. I would get a fan to blow air away from the house door..

Tell her the best way to get rid of gas vapors is to light a match...
Then kick over a 5 gallon can on your way to the bar.
It works. Trust me...
You'll be better off without her.

the main issue i have with the smell of gas is when its OLD gas...that stench just clings to you...
i know that jegs and summit sell additives that make your exhaust smell like stuff..(grape, bubble gum, pina colada, etc..) obviously ya have to put it in the gas. wonder if that might take some of the "gas smell" outta the garage.
immagine the wife popping out to see why the house smells like fruit, and finding you playing with gasoline!!!
just another thought
