I know you guys have seen enough of these Sedan builds lately to last a lifetime, but here comes another one just in case you’re not totally sick of them!!!

I picked this Sedan up earlier this year and finally have a little time to get going on it.
The plans are a 6” chop, channel the width of the frame, no fenders or hood, 2x3 tube frame z’ed front and back, suicided ’40 ford front end, another one of them 401 Nailheads, 400 trans, 9” rear, wide whites……the rest????????

I won’t bore you guys with another tech article on every detail of the build, but I’ll post some progress pics along the way. If there’s something in particular you want to see, I know you’ll let me know. I started the build 2 weeks ago and hope to have it finished for the spring. We’ll see!!

Here’s the ’31 I picked up from a buddy. It came with a truck load of other Model-A sheetmetal and parts that I was able to sell, so the project is starting off pretty cheap. I already had most of the rest of the parts, that’s why the build list is what it is.

The frame was built with 2x3x1/16 tubing. Cut and ready for welding in my frame jig (aka – the flattest spot on the garage floor I could find and some nice square oak blocks and a lot of clamping and measuring).

The rear is z'ed 15”

I mocked up the 40 Ford axle, wishbones, spring and stuff so I could figure out the spring to frame and spring to wishbone mounting.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v255/GOTCH/31%20Sedan%20Build/100_2046.jpg

Rear mockup so I could design the rear suspension. It’s going to be ladder bars with ??? for spring(s).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v255/GOTCH/31%20Sedan%20Build/100_2050.jpg

That’s it for now. I'll put more up as I progress unless you guys have already seen too much!
Like I said, it's just another A-Sedan build!!

Nice project. If it turns out half as cool as your truck it will kick ass. How about some channelling tech when you get there? How you build the floor etc...

Good luck with it.

you don't happen to have the dimmensions of that frame, do you? that's almost exactly how i did mine for my 31 sedan, with out the front Z. i'm gonna cut it up and revamp. yours looks like it's right on the money.

width at front crossmember, rear member, lengthe from top of Z to front crossmember, etc.

thanks

Thanks guys. I'll keep the progress pics coming. You'll be sorry!!
I've had a couple of other people that saw the frame ask for dimensions. I'll get the frame design I made from the napkin to a real piece of paper I can scan and post.

Jalopy43 - nice job on yours and only 8 months. Got any pictures of your build?

Dave - I've got to paint it too????? Shit, I thought I could just weld it together and be done!

forsakenfew - heres a couple of the frame dimensions you were asking about. I'll try to get the sketch cleaned up and posted.
Rear width up to just behind the doors - 39" outside
Width at the firewall - 30"outside
Width at the front x-member - 28" outside
Top of front kick to inside front x-member - 40"

Mike - No, thats a new frame I built last weekend for the Sedan. The other ones in the shed waitin for you if you want it? I want to mount the body this weekend and then I'll give it a haircut.

forsakenfew - Here's a sketch of the frame I built.
This is what I have so far and it looks like it will work. I also plan on putting some diamond shaped plates over the welded seams at the kick-ups on the outside of the frame for strength. We'll see how the crossmembers fit in pretty soon also. Keith

LeadsledMerc,
That looks great, I've been thinking along the same lines but have too many irons in the fire to start another project now. I was considering moving the rear wheelwell up to match the tire, but it would take quite a bit of metalwork to pull off and look good. With the large kick up at the real you could probably use some quarter elliptic springs, or buggy spring would still work nice and be period perfect.

So, Keith, I now know where the frame building elves have been hanging out. Send them my way will ya? I even have a less ambitious project for them to fabricate given that I'm using Ford parts.

Anyway, looks great. And it motivates the rest of us slobs to get stuff done.

????? rear springs.. heres cheap and easy if ya want it..i bought a pair of coil overs that were in a chevelle for 50 bucks at stafford, and changed the springs with ones for a sprint car..actually has a nice ride! who cares if it isnt period correct, the only one thats ever gonna see it is getting run over by you !!!

keep em comming, how anyone can get sick of build up pics I dont know, they rejuvinate me to start another project.

will have to settle for building a car for a mate, but hey, better to spend his money! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Like the chassis looks good.

12-10-2004, 07:47 PM
Dave, thats probably the way I'm going to go. Their easy to set up and easy to tune.
That's what I put in the PU and it rides pissa. Like you said, you won't see under this one and I like the idea of $50!

thank you for the sketches!! guess mines not as close as i thought. yours is MUCH nicer. im gonna cut the front end up in a week or so to Z it and pinch it a bit.

How much are you going to kick it? Good luck with the frame.
Make sure you show us your progress.

forsakenfew
12-10-2004, 10:32 PM
well, the frame (2"x3" rectangle) is already built with a 14" kick in the rear. left the rails long up front so i could whack em and Z it when i decided where the body and motor were gonna sit.

so, now i'm gonna cut it up, give it a 3" Z, (frame rail hieght) and pinch it a bit cause im not happy with the width at the front cross member.

hell, it's my first attempt at this, and for some reason, i can't seem to do anything right the first time.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

thanks again for the info, it'll help alot.

Thanx, now I know what the proper dimensions are (boy, was I off).I'm building a woody station hack or pick-up out of cedar strip, like a canoe, and mahogany. This forum has lit a fire under my ass!I used to daydream now I'm motovated.

LeadSled two questions...How much of a channel do you have and how wide is that rearend. great looking car.

LeadSledMerc
12-12-2004, 12:03 AM
Hey sgary, those are the "proper dimensions" for this project. That doesn't mean it will work for your wagon or PU.
Hell, I'm not even sure if it's going to work for this project!!!!!!

Jerry, hows the roadster coming?
Did you get a tag on it yet?

LeadSledMerc
12-12-2004, 12:10 AM
Sprout, The channel ends up at 7" with the bottom of the frame flush with the bottom of the body.
The 9" rear is 57" flange to flange. Eye balling it, I think that one is going to be a couple of inches to narrow. I need to check the assembly dimensions pretty soon.

BUICKS38
12-12-2004, 08:27 AM
No Keith no tag yet. But i have been driving the hell out of it. infact i better get more gas for it.LOL I love the car it rides great. I just hope the old flattie holds up.

I'm building the body to fit the frame.I dont't know any body dimensions at all.I don't even know anybody with rod to take measurements from.Your dimensions worked perfectly to the scale drawing I made.
Thanx for the inspiration,I needed it bad.
