View Full Version : Looking for a 7" booster..
What the hell did these things come on? The closest thing I can find is an 82-85 Camaro. I'd also like to know what the dual diaphram 7"ers came on or if they were aftermarket only.
I got mine off a '84 Mustang
Don't salvage brake parts off a car that's got front end wreck damage though...
It just may be an indication that the brakes failed on it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The Mustang is an 8" booster. the 7" boosters are an aftermarket special, a modified Japanese booster. none of the OE boosters are the same. the mustang booster does work good if you have enough room.

I have a 1980 Camaro booster if ya want it but checkout a 1993 Pont Bonneville. I have one of them under the floor of my 39 coupe. Fits great and has restrictor valves already for front and rear built in. DAMN! I think I just cost myself a sell. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

A 67 and earlier Ford Pickup has a small 7 inch booster. I know a couple guys that have them.

Yeah, but are the early Ford 7" ones a dual-diaphragm super booster (tm), whatever that means? (I'm assuming different from normal?) Might be something to those.
Also, I have a question-- since I'll be running a blown motor with NO vacuum unless I take it from above the blower --and I don't want a big ugly vacuum line there-- what is recommended? Is there a reliable electric motor that creates vacuum?
I know there is such a thing as a "hydroboost", and it doesn't even look like it has a big booster-- it looks very compact. But if I'm not mistaken, these are those things that make a pulsating electric vibration in the pedal... "rrrrrrrrrr". I hate driving those cars.
So, any suggestions on a good, powerful booster setup that is compact and somehow works on blown motors with no vacuum??????????
So what size cars are we talking about here?
Lightweight coupes and roadsters or low-slung and heavy tanks?
You don't need brake boosters on light cars.

I have heard from some of the Brake Reps that the Chevette(GM X chassis?) used a small 7"ish unit. I know it is pretty small. I have seen and used import truck boosters too but that was early 80s cars/trucks from a salvage yard.
If I remember right the Chevette one is pretty cheap to buy from Napa type stores.

Early 70's Datsun Pickups, the Lil' Hustler days.
An old man was complaining to me once that his new (then, 91?) big Caprice wagon (cockroach style) had an electric vacuum pump for the brake booster. I'm not sure if this was in addition to engine vacuum or a stand alone system. Might be something to look into if you don't think you'll have enough from the engine alone.
Am I nuts or did I just remember the story wrong? Could have been the power steering pump kind. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
THANKS ALOT GUYS!!!! Awesome responses! That's what I was looking for, lot's of info. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Blownolds, I stumbled into a vac. pump looking for a booster, try a Ford F-250 diesel truck. I don't think the diesels make much vac. either. Try looking at the Oreilly's web site, I know I saw alisting for it.
