My buddy is piecing togather a 46 convert. Wants to chop the top a little. Has anyone done the "drop the top bows in the car" type of chop. He remembers a rod book article a few years back where the brackets were just lower down in the body. Anyone know the mag that article was in or any tips on what to do and what not to do? Thanks a bunch Steve

I couldn't even begin to try, That's a complicated top, but many have been done. I'm sure somebody around here knows how to do it.

I seem to remember some coverage of a 46-48 ford convertable which was being built for Tim Allen. It was covered in Street Rodder Magazine. (I know , Not that rag) I think they did lower the mechanism in the body to match the lower windshield top.

The convert tops are fairly easy to modify, the hard work is in the vent window and quarter window frames. I start by rollin down the door glass to where I want it, then roll up the quarter window to see where to modify it. Now you can see where the top has to go........OLDBEET

My dad chopped his 41 Convertable and he told me it was difficult to get the bowes all to work properly.

Rod and Custom had the Tim Allen car in feb 97 page 48 and Apr 98 page 92. American Rodder had an article on chopping fat fords in Feb 94 page 34 and Mar 94 Page 46. I haven't pulled them out to check the articles though. Street rodder index doesn't show any articles for chopping tops.

I chopped mine the normal way and everything worked out fine. With a 2 1/4" chop the top still folded down into the well without hitting anything. The front section had to be lengthened about 2 1/2" if I recall. The worst part of this chop is getting the stainless trim around the rear window to fit right. I ended up making two 90 degree pieces of sheetmetal (inner and outer) and mig welding them together and then got them chrome pkated.
