Been workin' on the modified and I cut up a '50 ford truck hood for the rear corners of the body. Well when I cut the front of the hood off, dad says "why don't ya use that as your grille?" So after loosing a Whippet shell on e-bay for $102 bucks (and it was rusted in half on the bottom)...I've decided to fab one up in true "NealinCA Style". The hood was free...so the worst I can do is ruin it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Here's a couple progress pics...Stitch

That looks good. Always good to see creativity… also looks like you could use it as your fire wall too…just thinking

It's going to be tough to live up to the NealinCA grill, but I think you can do it. Keep us posted! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Good eye seeing that shell in those curves. I think you have already done the hardest part. GO FOR IT!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Killer project. Wanted a whippet shell for my bucket. can't find one. I do have a good '23 Whippet title I'm using though.

Just an update... the '50 hood worked out really well. The only "problem" was when it was sliced to size and clamped together, the center had a peak in it. The solution was simple. I cut the peak out and hammered a piece of sheetmetal into a compound curve and tacked it in place. Next up, I'm gonna fab up the bottom... thinkin' about usin' pieces from a bent up '29 A shell....Then I'll cut the center out....Stitch

No radiator yet...we've got a guy locally that will custom build whatever you need. And best of all he's reasonable with the $$$$.

The grill shell looks good. I think a 28-29 shell bottom would fit the look well.

Keep us posted on the whole project, it looks like a fun car.

hey Rooster... Was that a Hell-o-ween parade? I'm still plannin' on the 3b grille we talked about! Neal, I gotta say your faux '32 shell was a real inspiration. I'm no sheetmetal man...but figured I didn't have much to loose! It does look like the A bottom will work out slick too... How's your project commin' along?

So skip, you made any more progress?

I found a 48-50 hood today. Gonna go back for it soon. It won't replace my gennie Whippet shell but will make a neat project.

Believe it or not , the thing looks better in person. I tried to take a couple photos of it but there's some force field in Stitch's shop that just won't let you take a quality picture. Must be the lighting. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey JohnB...didn't you see the signs hangin' up that say "no flash Photography in the Fortress of Solitude"?!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I ran on Saturday afternoon to collect the previously mentioned '29 A shell...by the time I got back to the shop it was too late to get started. I hope to get the thing tacked together sometime this week. I'll post a couple pics as it progresses.

If I remember right, you're brillance glows so bright that a person doesn't need a flash to take pictures around you. Just a set of welding goggles. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh wait, that wasn't where the glow was coming from. I think it was from where Rooster had been polishing Stitch's .... well I better keep some secrets.

I still say there's some force in that shop that keeps down picture quality. Maybe if Stitch used something better then 35 watt light bulbs. Cheap skate!

I"m not tryin to be a dick (ok maybe just a little bit) but is this the right grill? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Got it this weekend at a local junkyard. Had no clue it was there. Got it complete with the radiator. The bottom is rusted off of the shell. The radiator looks good. I won't be a total dick and tell you how cheap it was http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Your grill will be better. Anybody can buy a grill, building one is cool!!

I got a bit held up on mine this week fabbin' up a front cross member, but, HOPEFULLY I'll get to put a couple hours in this weekend....Now I have a good reference photo!!! Ya don't wanna part with that Whippet emblem do ya? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif If not it looks like I'm gonna make one out of some tin foil and plastic wrap!

Hey Skipstitch...I plucked a mint Whippet emblem off a late 20's Whippet coupe front bumper just before the farmer bulldozed the car into the ground. I snagged the entire bumper but only have the brass emblem left. I was gonna use it on something someday but I've had it 12 years without needing it so if you send me your address via E-mail, I'll pop it into an envelope and ship it off to you....Like Nick Burns would say................
"Your welcooooooooome."

It's not very big....only about 1.25" in diameter. Excuse my crappy digital camera shot here. The outside edges say:
"the Willys Overland Company" and "Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A."

Hey atch... I've been side tracked building doors for the car. Looks like the shell will be postponed for a bit longer. I'll do an update on the car this week, including a finished door! Stitch

Hey atch... I haven't had a chance to even work on the car for the past 4 months. I'm hopin' to get back after it soon... but I have a few things up my sleeve at the shop that may eat up my hobby time http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Stitch
