Since ryan's Editorial hit a nerve on the Golden era of drag racing....I thought i show some art that was in comic books as a kid.
the great Alex Toth.
Mattel ran some spreads for hot wheels and feature the Snake and mongoose in the spreads....man...i still remember my first hot wheels set...around 68 or 69

Any rate....Alex was a master..... and I am highly influenced by his work.
I think his career started in the late 40's and like a true artist passed at his art desk a few years back,,,,,clutching his trusty sable.

and of course there WAS a Hot wheels comic book(hey....grab all them kiddies cash!)
I have every issue

No one could manipulate neg/pos space and draw like Mr. Toth!
Dick Giordano did the inks .

Jeff, that inking is kick ass!

Here is what I have for this week....

Started a new shifter sculpt as I really wanted a break from painting for a bit. Got him finished, now I just need to make a mold and cast him up...

I also finished this little guy while painting in the booth at ink and iron...he's about 3 inches tall...and where the idea for the sculpt started...

Man, you guys rule. These art shows get better every week.

The grinder art is pretty cool. Might have to give that media a try myself.

Clysdale - outstanding skull. Can't wait to see it cast.

Thanks for posting the Hot Wheels stuff Mr. Norwell. Really brings back memories. The Mongoose, Snake rivalry defined drag racing for me as a kid. Can't even remember how many times I practiced drawing those ads!

Artists, ever have one of those paintings or pieces that you wish you would have never sold. For me, most of them. At least others are hopefully enjoying them.
This little painting was one of them.
Yes, some of you have seen it already (yes it's old) but I still got zip for this week. Started work on one though so maybe next week.

Here's a customized 3D model I did this week. Based on Dan Palatnik's model, I chopped it, gave it some later Merc fender lips, Caddy Sombrero's, etc. I had put 53 Buick side trim on it too, but didn't like it as much. I opted to keep it smooth and clean, with no spot lights either. Funny, it looks a lot like the one that "jwho art" drew up and posted tonight.

So, I'm at Billetproof last weekend strip'n one of my panels (feeling like I'm not ready to do anybody's stuff yet) and Denise walks up with her cooler and says "Hey sweetie, I don't think I have anything on here from you yet - I'll be back a little later, take your time..."
I could not turn her down...
She got real excited about the purple and magenta idea (mine is the bottom one), so Here it is, my first real pinstripe job: :D

Chad,
Thanks, Man... I was really inspired by your art. It is so cool to be around other artists when they are working. As an artist myself (drawing cars for over 40 of my 47 years - just ask my teachers) I always learn from watching others work. Its even better when its a really 1st class dude like you. There is a certain serenity that a person wears when they are in the zone doing what they love - you really have that. I love to see it.

All 'ya all have great stuff on here this week. I really dig all the various art forms and - as always come away inspired.:cool::cool:

Jeff and Tim, These Roadsters are killing me. I hope this economy turns around, so I can finish my wifes 32.

The second drawing is a tribute to Phil Remington. His Dry Lakes Roadster is being recreated by Dan Webb (Dan did his own version of the Golden Sub) Phil is in his 80's now and works for Dan Gurney! He raced his roadster in the 40's and broke numerous records. He went into the service and his parents sold the car. It was later destroyed drag racing...

Have some of my stuff to post later on,but now I would like to post some pictures of other artist's work I have acquired over the years.Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

First is a metal poster of the Broken Dream Kruise by Jeff Shea.

Next is a Christmas card by Ken Jacobs of Rehoboth MA

Next is a limited edition belt buckle done by Salvador Dali in the early 1950's for Pirelli Tires.Bought at a flea market for $5.

Next is a sketch of my 55 Safari done by Fat Hack and purchased by Pat Maphis(Skate Fink)who added a few of his own touches(including a hand made striping brush)and framed it;then sent it to me.Thanks again Pat!

Next is an illustration I bought at a flea market for $15.Pen and ink with watercolor and a bit of airbrush by someone named Grant.Maybe worked for the auto industry.

Next is a multimedia piece done by a woman from India I met at a garage sale.It is on wood and is made of a mix of flour and water moulded into shapes and applied in a geometric design;then hand painted with a small brush.I traded her a striping brush for this one.

Next is a piece from Lee Hulick(Vance);a combination sculpture and striping piece. You can also use it as a defensive weapon(it IS heavy!)

Stay tuned for part 2!

A32Flathead, Nice black and white stuff...
Jeff and Tim, These Roadsters are killing me. I hope this economy turns around, so I can finish my wifes 32.

I have 2 this week:
The first is a '55 Olds. I've always love these headlights, and very cool chrome bumper & trim. Couldn't resist drawing it..

One of my parts of this drawing is the kids chasing him down the street...

Talk about art ! How about the new Rod & Kulture cover ?? Is that nice or what ?

I second that. I was just thinking the same thing the other day. I think I've stared a hole in my issue. Zombie, you do a hell of a job with that magazine.:D

Here's a few unique signs that I am going to sell at the car shows, etc. The purple one is spoken for. Size is 6" X 30". MDO board. Faux finished. Gold & aluminum leafed.

Hell Luke L what could'nt I do with a bunch of those ? ( I could use one as our streetsign ! )
Are they an 'inside' job ?

Awesome work as always Jeff!! Love Dave's Speedster! Gonna have to get you to do some of that artwork for a few of my rides as well. Love the striping on the truck. The connecting rod for a column drop rocks.
