View Full Version : Exhaust experts....give me some advice

i'm building an axhaust system for a `32 ford with 2-1/4" tubing and 11" glasspacks. i'd like to try an H-pipe,connecting the two sides together. i know this is suposed to give you more bottom end torque and a mellower sound. every system i've seen with this has the h-pipe before the mufflers,but with the lack of space ,i only have room for it after the mufflers. is there any advantage to this? thanks for your help

An old muffler guy told me this; bring the motor to running temp, paint the head pipes with bomb can, the point where the paint dries is about where the crossover pipe goes. Don't know if its true, but I believe so.......OLDBEET

Oldbeet is right, I've also heard that, it's where the exhaust gets the hottest, but usually it's where the paint burns.

I've never seen a crossover after the mufflers, I don't think it would do much at that point in the exhaust. If you do find a place for it, an X-pipe crossover is the way to go, it actually helped quite down my exhaust as well.

Putting it after the mufflers would mellow the sound a bit, but wouldn't do a thing for performance.

Like they've said above, the "burn off" point with a light coat of paint on the pipes is ideally where you want to locate your crossover pipe, but moving at few inches either way won't hurt much, either.

(Also the same trick used to tune collectors on open headers. Install long collectors with paint on them and make several 1/4 mile passes. Cut the collectors down to the "burn off" point and you're done!)

Old beet is right. We used to paint em then run em down the road. But the way he said works just as well.
If you put the cross behind the muffler it wont help because the muffler has already broke up the exhaust pulse.

If you're not too far down the line, use 2 1/2" tubing instead of the 2 1/4".

Part of it depends on the engine size and part on the expected rpm range.

This from a guy who started with a 2 1/4" system behind a 462" Buick, built a 2 1/2" system and tried several different mufflers.

Far as the 11" glasspacks go, why bother?
They're not going to do anything for sound attenuation.
And if noise is all you're looking for, skip the balance tube as well.
It improves low end torque and takes a bit of the low frequency harmonic out of the sound and that translates to fewer car alarms that go off when you pass by.

Not that I've ever done that....

old beat's trick has to do with shockwave tuning, the same thing that makes tuned length headers work. ( sort of like ripples in water).
The "knot" will move up and down the pipe depending on RPM, so you will have to drive your car like you normally do to find the sweet spot.
If you just let it heat up in the driveway, you will have it perfectly tuned for idle...

thank you all for the info. it's about what i was thinking,a complete waste of time.i thought maybe there might be something i overlooked.as for the 11" glasspacks,the guy wants it loud,with cut-outs right behind the hairpin frame brackets
