"Tomb of Zoom" 1948 HotRod Mag Cover Clone -John Toich was the builder with some help from friends in Gasoline Alley, Indianapolis, I am just the current custodian of this mid 90's Very Expensive car~She is All Hand Built with the Salt & strip in mind...This is a HotRod with 13. 50 second ET's.
Specs:
Hand fabricated Z'd chassis, Nose is custom blend of track to 32 shell, Glass Body from Speedy Bill, Tuned Port Injection/TPI 305 V8 chipped with Caddy CTS injectors, cold air intake, 700r 4 spd auto with custom Lokar shifter, SCTA inspired chassis-All chrome moly, includes another roll-bar with downtube to floor, just is not practical to build a dual purpose rod/salt car anymore... Ford tube axles, friction shocks up front with custom fabricated corvette discs up front (the small/early gen alum finned calipers), Lincoln posi disc rear with freeway gears/323's with coil-overs, Great handling 4 link rear, lots of louvers, Auburn/Moon Cluster, Red Leather is very, very comfy, (you sit low) custom Telescoping steering column, 3 & (4 installed) spoke sprintcar style steering wheel, I will replace the red carpet due to Sun fade,Firestone rears are new.
The cool stuff includes line locks for the front wheels to do safe burnouts (I have never done one, pic is of builder's wife) & water squirters hidden in the nerf bars to make the tires easier to light , you can see the tubes in trunk area. Exterior vents are stromberg intakes.
Regg Schlemmer had a set of stainless high pipes like these, not just the low Lake Pipes we see on the Hotrod 48 cover, also, the magazine artist used the wrong color yellow. Per Regg's best friend, this is the actual color because he picked it out! There was a bit of an Indy conspiracy when the local Indy drivers took him out one race night because the California driver was winning everything on the shorttrack, car was totaled...from what I hear.
She rides really nice, turns 13. 50's in bias ply's, I have turned 13.70's with the tall gears in it.The radials in front/bias on rear actually makes a good handling balance & she drifts really well. She really moves out~had an M3 BMW covered 8 ways to Sunday at 125 mph...fun. Laquer Paint is in good shape with some road chips on the nose (91 Frwy) and stress cracks in the usual places, lacquer paint has a nice vintage patina. I get an unbelievable amount of attention in this car and have been invited to just everything. The tradition Rodders even like this beautiful car, I just keep the hood closed & they think a Flattie is under the hood.
This car is way more practical (starter ring does not drag) than Brizio's interpretation which is now owned by Vintage Salt collector Bruce Meyer.
Finest representation of the 48 cover car built without a doubt, at least until someone finds a set of Essex rails and tries again:)
This is a HotRod, not a Rat Rot pile or 1-800 catalog build...No trades at this time, please call my cell with Questions GP- 951.310.1957 or drop me an email: GP(at)wizardsworks.org
