This Merc has a decent interior, and it looks like decent quality work...but WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE ROOF TREATMENT! Talk about a combo not going together! 10 people have bid on it already! Sheesh....

Not my cup of tea, but there is a ton of work in that thing. Also whats up with no title, is it stolen?

I'm thinkin either the bank or his ex-ol' lady has the title. The current bid, $26 K is a lotta money to pay for a car that may be legally repo'd by the bank or the ex.
Not my cuppa T anyway...

It's not just the roof -- the rear end is also done in a contempory way. The front and rear are in real visual competition. It's sort of saying, "Here I come, I'm in the the 80s, and HERE I GO, I'm 2003!"
I'm not one of those guys that says,"yeah, but I can appreciate the work that went into it." Lots of work without a clear visual congruity and aesthetic is just a lot of wasted work.

the roof kinda looks like a certain shoebox i've seen around here
you know, poorboy - we may be thinking of the same car. it brought to mind a certain flat black tank-like vehicle. couple photos posted around the time of VLV.

maybe it was wrecked, and that's why they put the roof on, and for that matter maybe all he can get is a salvage title... ???

Warpigg I thought about that too...it having a caved in roof or something...but man...all those man hours wasted on doing the rest of the car, only to wind up with something that makes you say "what the hell was that!?" as it drives by...maybe he just had too much money on his hands, and a strange vision of what a "modernized" Merc should look like. At any rate, a waste of a good tub....I'd kill for the shell...and put MY roof back on it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

EXACTLY, it is in Vermont, a state where there is NO CAR CULTURE at all. Yes there is alot of work in it, but I could spend 1000 hours building a Chevy Citation, and it would still be a Citation.

Hell no...that is the point. SEE...You can't polish a turd.
Looks to me like the guy tore up a good Riviera and a good Merc to make that thing. Two of my favorite body styles of all time don't merge too well... Disaster.

Considering that in the day, customizing was a way to make an old vehicle look new, this guy has done the trick. I don't like the old style front end with the moderized rear treatment though. They are both done well, just don't go together. The car looks rite from the rear because it is flatroofed and he used the Riv trunk lid. From the front the flat roof doesn't work with the curved stock hood. Generally, I like to see something different done with cars when customized. Tired of all the Mercs looking the same because that is the way they were customized to be traditional. Same rational that keeps me from being a restorer. The rear is unique, but the front is a been there done that look. I actully like the rear 3/4 view of the car. Hate the front on view, doesn't work. It is hard to do something different to a Merc these days. He almost nailed it. Traditional, definitely not. Unique, definitely. Just my 2 cents.

Depending on the state, there might not be a title.
In NY, if it's older than 1973, you get a transferrable registration.

Isn't there a late-model Cadillac that looks just like that?

That car would rock if the roof had been chopped another 3 inches.

YUK!!!! I thank God that the trend is over. The only one that I liked was the buick from Kansas. Most of the ones that I have seen is trying to but a square peg in a round hole. I chopped the Merc and I don't know I think you make it into a Convertible.

I think he would have scored more points on this one with a roof line from a 68' 69' skylark. Has a nice rounded rear. But you would need to do something about the squared off pillars... geeeze http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I really like the 'boytz' wheels.
I wonder if that's the same Boytz as in Boytz Cozzington?

Im with FORDNUTS. from the side or rear it dont look bad.The front is horrid lookin at the roof. Kinda like a pack a smokes on a laid over soup can. I think I could fix the roof, with a air hose and 150 lbs of air.close the doors and windows then blow some shape in it.That would round it out and look much better.---FEDER
