hey guys

the ford measures 60" from the middle of the rear u-joint to the middle of the front u-joint on the tail shaft

so give about 1 1/2 for travel i get like 58 1/2" driveshaft

what chevy would have that length shaft? 70/80s impala caprice?

I was needing one 58" and couldn't find it anywhere. All the long trucks and vans have a carrier bearing.
I ended up getting the ends and re-tubing one.

Cost about $200 with balancing.

I think after the first cople years of the 73-up/chevpickup body style, some were 2 peice driveshafts.-thats the longest I have found-I used it on a 52 chevy longbed pickup that took a long driveshaft.......My 88 chev PU has a long one-but its all aluminum.

To cut and balance a shaft you bring in is $50.00 where I live. If they supply the tube it's more.

is it safe to lengthen a shaft? just add the 3 na half inches to the one i have now?

It could probably be done, but i wouldn't do it. Just get somebody to make you a new tube.

The added piece would have to be perfectly inline with the original, plus you have two more Weld Joints that could possibly break. You could have somebody part the yoke off on a lathe, then add your piece, resulting in only one extra weld, but by the time you did that and had it balanced, you might as well have just had a new tube made.

Do not add and leangth to the shaft! No good driveline place would doit either. I needed a 60" drive shaft and ended up making one out of a 53 buick torque tube. Worked great and handled a ton of torque. They have a necked down design which ends up fiting the yoke for a modern driveshaft perfectly. The guys at the driveline place had never seen it done before, but said it went together perfeclty and needed vety little balancing. So my sugestion would be to try and find a old buick torque tube and just use the tube for the driveshaft.
