I have a 64 283 and got one of those low slung brakets from speedway. 20 bucks. It hangs the alternator down to the bottom left of the motor. They have others available pretty cheap. They are only for the short water pump though.

Do you have holes in the heads for mounts? If so, use a 67-72 Chevy truck alternator mount. It's for short pump. If you had to buy both pieces new, they cost 27 dollars at the GM dealer.

Look in 60's camaros or impalas. You could drill & tap your passenger side head too I guess.

HH beat me to it. The truck mounts he shows are the ones I was thinking of.

Does the truck mount bolt into the intake manifold and the head? I got this goddamn bracket from a swap meet that's shaped something like that, but I can;t for the life of me figure out how the goddamn thing goes on. It's one of those chrome ones you see at swap meets they sell with all the other chrome shit...

kojack, what year heads is the bracket intended to mount onto? not sure if this is so with the SBC, but BBC's 68 and up have brackets that also mount onto the water pump

I ran the numbers, and it's supposed to be a 60's SBC, a 283. It's a short waterpump. I'll post a picture after work... I was going to ask about this anyway...
any pix of that 67-72 truck bracket by its self?
i want to say theres only 1 hole in the passenger head??
how do i figure were to drill and tap for a new hole or whatever?

I went out and snapped a close up picture of the bracket. It needs two holes to mount. I got these new at the GM dealer because I was in a bind for time and was leaving for a show in Kansas. They cost about 27-28 dollars for both of them.
See, digital cameras are good for more than snapping nekkid pictures of my wife.

Tim,
Another source is the stuff the Alan Groves sells. I use his steel drivers side alternator mount and it utilizes bolts in the intake, front two, and a bolt on the water pump. We're talkin about $60 but it's a good durable, fits right product.

don't drill the heads of a 283, they weren't designed for that. use the smog pump mounting bracket for a mid 70's chevy. they bolt to the intake manifold and waterpump. it's a lot like the So-Cal one. Speedway has them in their catalog too. the 283 in the picture has the chevy smog pump bracket

if you wanna keep it old shool , we use the cheapy paintable alt mount from socal, its a socal part, not the bill's rod shop bracket they carry. it is 2 pcs. a cradle bracket which mts. to the intake driver side fisrt two bolts, and clears the stock temp sender if 55-69 stock intake is used. and the second bracket is a very traditional sickle type, which mounts to the top driver side water pump bracket, you must use the stock short wp. there should be a photo, on line, in the newest socal catalog. this bracket is not flashy,or billet, and gives you 1-2 inches of belt tension adjustment. sincerly aces and eights vintage auto repair
