View Full Version : How spectator friendly is this event?

Yet another year goes by and my car is still not ready to participate. But this year I would like to come and check it out and bring my son. Is this event spectator friendly? What access is there if you are there to watch and make friends? I am sure there is much more to it if you are actually participating, but what can I expect if I am not in this year and just show up?

I have not had a car there two years in a row and still made the trip from Phoenix. Its all access and everyone is friendly. You and your son will have a blast. The hotel parking lot is half of the fun

And whatever fun you may miss at the hotel, you'll make up for it by having a blast at the track!:D

I traveled up last year and finally met a couple of local guys I had not been able to catch up with at home. Lot of fun and easy to find folks to talk to. I did not find any pretense at the meet or the motel parking lot. I do suggest lawn chairs and a cooler with soda or whatever you guys in Santa Fe drink these days.

I don't have a car I can bring but I am definately coming this year. I already have my reservations. Pictures say a thousand words and they all speak volumes about the experiance.

I have a room at the Holiday Inn and need to understand the schedule of events. What is the schedule for the day? Does everybody leave the hotel and go to the track on Saturday morning then return to the hotel at night? How does it work? I plan on driving my "40" to the hotel on Saturday morning early and they what, follow the crowd??? Help....RatRoy:confused:

Pretty much, most of us run to Springfield on Friday for the swapmeet.
Saturday everybody drives out to the track. The track does ask that you dont show up before the preset time that they open the gates because the traffic backs up on the two lane highway and causes a mess.
On Friday night you track down Denise for her home made cookies.

Glen, I would really enjoy seeing the A sedan make a pass at this year at Mokan. I love that car.

I look forward to this every year and it seems so far away, next thing I know I'm in the parking lot talking with people that I have not seen in 6 months. This is a can't miss event in my opinion.

The HAMB Drags are the best. Way laid back. Everybody is willing to talk and eager to see what you brought. If you don't bring something, no sweat just enjoy.

I've been there with my '29, in my brother's '32, and in my late-model swap meet truck. Last year when I tagged along in my brother's '32, I think I actually had more fun than I did when I took my '29. When I had my car there I spent most my time in the staging lanes or tracking down friends to race that I didn't get to see the other cars zip down the track. If I take my car this year, I probably won't make more than 2 or 3 runs. Then I'll have time for everything else.

I've only been once. A few years ago. It was awesome. Me and a bud drove up from Austin in his mom's Dodge Neon to save on fuel. Got a cheap hotel in Joplin. The drags were awesome, everyone was awesome, met lots of HAMBers. I kick myself for not going back. Will try to see if it's in the budget to go this year. Might be hard to do since I'm planning to go to KKOA in Salina in July. Now that I think about it, I just might skip KKOA and head to the drags...gives me another month to save for the trip.

You planning ahead for Denise this year Ryno? ;-) Thanks much for the offer to stash the coupe when I broke last year. I need to make a point to stop by and eat your donuts this year.

What everybody else has said. This is the one even that makes my year.

Ryno, you give me a time and I swear I will be there. (No brunch like the last 2 years) You know you are killing my drinking time Friday night by making me get up before 10:00

Can't wait to see everyone. Also tell your son he has another ride coming to him in my HotRod

What a great addition that could be. Have a class that has to be built and raced all in the time of the event...maybe not. I see alot of issues coming up.

Dude, you need to PM Ryan or MoKanMan to get the straight answer on that but my guess is no. Gates are not open and no one is there. The hotel is where all the action is anyway.
