I've had 2 claims with Hagerty. $5,700 worth of damage to my 47 Chevy ragtop, paid without ANY hassles. Then, a couple of weeks later, that same Chevy was burned in a shop fire and was a complete loss. I had a check for the full AGREED VALUE in 28 days. The only reason it even took 28 days was they were waiting for the fire departments report.
I have also heard good things regarding Grundy (http://www.grundy.com) Both places will give you an on line quote in a matter of minutes.

I have friends who got super-screwed without specialty insurance...
I hope to never need it, but you just never know...
Thanks alot for the input..!!! -Snacks

It all depends where you live, too. Hagerty can't insure any non-stock cars in Massachusetts. Which, I'm sure isn't their fault - MA sucks for some things. I'm putting my 71 Chevelle SS through them, since it is still stock - $85 a year for comprehensive with a $300 deductible!!!! You can't beat that with a bat!
So, can anyone suggest any other companies that might be able to insure a modified car in MA... I'm looking for my 50 chebby fleetline

AAA doesn't have collector car insurance, but for members they have a connection with AHI (American Hobbyist Insurance)
The rates very on what you have. A modified vehicle garners about three times the premium than a stocker. And the replacement value is an agreed amount that is reflected in the premiums.
I'm in the process so I can't tell you how good they are. One thing this car can not be your daily driver, but I don't see any mileage restrictions.

AAA has always insured my cars at appraised value- with no limits on annual milage... even seriously modified vehicles, as long as they were legal.
I belive Hagerty has some serious milage limits (but i could be wrong- only spoke with them once reguarding my car).
AAA has paid me quickly, too... and gives me reasonable rates.

I use Grundy and so does my Dad. They let you set the value and have no mileage restrictions. The rates were really cheap also. I only paid $95/year for 10k of coverage on my 51 Chevy..

I've used Grundy for 8-9 years. Never had a claim with them.
some folks say Grundy says only "collector cars " on the phones when you call. yet they advertise with rods in their ads in mags and on TV.
My stuff certainly is not of the collector car style.... unless junk is a style? LOL

I'll try to make it short. I own a body and paint shop. I had a customer get his 57 Chrysler hit by a lady in an SUV (bitch). Her insurance company(one of the big ones) did an estimate amounting to $ 2800. I looked it over and told my customer there was no frickin' way that I could repair it under those perameters. I rewrote the estimate to my and his standards and came up with $ 8900 and change.......Short story is that Grundy (his insurance) company took the reins, came out and congratualated me on doing such a complete and fair estimate and gave my customer a check and told him that he could start the repair on his car. Done deal.......They were great to deal with ....No complaints at all from this repairer's end.

I have a question on Hagery, I just filled out the application, and in order to complete the application, I need to send them 150 bones. Is that usually what happens, I will call them tomorrow, but just wanted to make sure. Do they return your $$ in case they dont accept you.
hotrodladycrusr

Yes they will, they will send you your check back. Unless you've had excessive claims with them in the past, you shouldn't have any problems getting insurance thru them. One of their main stipulations is you must have an everyday driver. They want a copy of the declaration page (usually first page) of your everyday driver's insurance policy to prove that you have one.

Hello, I have a Kit car called Sterling The one that looks like a cross between a corvette and a lambo. Its on a VW 1966 Frame. Anyways... I want to know if anyone will insure me with full coverage (not much, just about $12,000.00) on this car. I want to drive it everywhere I go... that will include across state lines to visit family, crusing nights, Shows, and leasure time, even work from time to time.
Most will let me go where ever I want to but I have a limit of 5,000 miles MAX or I can have unlimited miles but... Only if I drive to car shows, cruise nights, and stuff like that.
I am looking to pay up to what I pay on my main vehicle $100/mo or 1,200/Yr
Anyone know where to look?
Many thanks

I shopped last year for insurance at renewal time. At that time I was with Hagerty and had an agreed value of 30K. I had been with Hagerty about 4 years; Allstate before that but Allstate would not renew after their 4 years. When I shopped Hagerty re-quoted the policy with 40K @ $462/year. Grundy quoted me $262/year for the identical coverage. Big difference was towing was included with Hagerty (I think up to two times a year; up to 200 miles) and Grundy does not include towing. Been driving the Blown flathead Merc for 10 years now and haven't needed a tow so I went with Grundy. Haven't had a claim with any so far but it's nice to have the agreed value for total replacement.

I have been using Condon and Skelly for several years and know of quite a few others that also have their coverage. I have not had any claims nor has anyone I know that has their coverage. Does anyone know if they are as good as the other specialty carriers?

Jack, I had Hagerty when my 62 Impala was stolen & they paid out in full. They were pretty easy to work with also. When my truck is done I will use them again.

Hey just incase anybody is interrested, I just hooked up with Hagerty, told them my car is a 1929 model "A", told them all the mod's and they set me up with a real nice policy! Up to 7500 miles a year, pleasure drives, occasional drives to work and only $375.00 per year, not bad if you ask me!

Had the best luck (so far) with Hagerty.
Generally speaking, collector car companies now define collector cars as 'pleasure vehicles', with the following criteria:
A) Pleasure use only, typically some mileage limitation (like under 7500 annually)
b) The vehicle must be stored in a permanent enclosure (i.e., garage or pole barn)
Ater that - there appear to be no limitations on the modifications and/or type of vehicle the collector car companies will insure. A good friend of mine bought a 2002 Trans Am convertible for his wife's 40th birthday, and he was able to insure it for $375 annually thru Hagerty.

AAA doesn't have collector car insurance
Actually, they do have collector car insurance, and it's even geared to the hot rodder, my policy covers my car, the garage, the tools in the garage, any extra parts for the car in said garage, it's also a stated value policy, I told them what it was worth, they agreed, simple as that, BobK is an insurance guy, you might ask him, but for my $$$ it's AAA all the way, no max miles, no BS, just insurance, tried and true

Just did an "instant quote" on the AAA website for my '38 Ford. The quote was $432.00. But, I now get essentially the same coverage from State Farm for $208.00. I get a price break from State Farm because of accident history, multicar, and so on. AAA didn't ask for age, accident history, or anything else that usually is figured into the premium. That might explain the big price difference.

Make sure that you take lots of pictures of your car and you have actual value insured on the vehicle. I have heard a few horror stories about what old cars are "worth" after someone was crashed into. Oh yea, and be real careful of which company you do get and what you say on the "world wide web", they are watching, just ask Denise (aka:hotrodladycrusr). I think that she had an issue with her insurance company a couple of years ago when she was running all over the USA.

Anybody know of a constructors insurance? Grundy has insured my other collector cars but will only insure completed cars. It's a grey area whether home-owners will cover it. You can have a lot of $$ tied up in that project to find out the hard way your not covered.

I sent them pictures & described them as "not yet painted" or "almost finished". They didn't say a thing about it. I doubt anyone will insure a pile of parts if you haven't even bolted the body to the frame yet (or set it on for a photo).

You ask BobK and he'll tell you the same thing he preached to me for a couple of years. "Stated Value is for squat" With stated value they can depreciate the car, so it doesn't matter how much YOU figure the cars worth or how much stated value you've been paying for. On the other hand AGREED VALUE is just that if something happens that's the value with no bullshit song and dance they pay the money. I went from $25,000 stated value with State Farm to $40,000 agreed value with Grundy and saved around $50 a year. With State Farm that was 6 months driving and 6 months storage vs year round driving with Grundy. Also they will insure cars under constuction if you have another car insured with them

For what its worth, I've had Grundy's for 2 years. As a matter of fact, I just made my first claim yesterday for a broken windshield on my 1930 A Bone Roadster. Discovered it broken when I went to pick it up from storage.
Told me to take it to a dealer of my choice and have them bill the company direct. I know other members of my Street Rod CLub who have filed claims with Grundy with absoulutely no problems.
