any body have experience with Naptha?
I found some low gloss black paint that has to be thinned to spray with Naptha.
Is it like laquer thinner or more like enamel reducer.

Do you think its compatible with laquer primer?

What about temp range?

i believe naptha is the main ingredient in lighter fluid, and many moons ago,it was used for dry cleaning clothes.
haven't seen it on the shelf many places though

Naphtha is a petroleum based fuel.I think it's similar to kerosene.

I worked for Gleason Works (Layed-Off over a year ago...),and in the paint booth they used Naptha as a reducer. Not sure what the ratio's were or any of the specifics, but at least you got a little info on the stuff.....

Oh, by the way, Gleason makes the machines that cut the gears in everyones car that posts on this board...... FYI http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I use it to clean 1Shot from brushes, strip wax from cars and trucks before striping. It evaporates very quickly, It's basically a cleaner, it might be a ok thinner for primer. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Home Depot(etc) sells gallon cans of Naptha in the paint section.

Didn't that used to be called WHITE gasoline? Naptha gas?
Same stuff as for old Coleman camp stoves? Volatile as HELL! Am I showing my age? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Don't take this for gospel.
(Oh yeah, the soap...used to be called "FELS NAPTHA")

This stuff has probably been outlawed in Cali...wear a respirator...unless that's your bag... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One-Shot recomends using it as a thinner for their "pearlescent" paints. I use it to thin all of my One-Shot paints. Judging by the smell, feel and overall consistency, it is very similar to mineral spirits. Definitely nothing like laquer thinner or any other "hot" type reducer.

Did some more searching last night, and Gleason used that stuff like "Preps-All". They would wipe down the metal with it before painting. Also, they old timers would fill up their Zippo's with it also.......

It's one of those things that really works and thus is probably outlawed in California. Right up there with Tri-Chlor on the "be careful with this shit" list. Yes, it does work in zippos but you gotta remember to blow the excess fumes out of the lid or you may have a firebomb in your hand when you light it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes--flammable and volatile as all getout. My Grandfather once told me about seeing a man killed in a flareup over the parts cleaner in the old Illinois Central car shps. Poor devil was toast in a second.

Won't work with laquer.
Pretty stout shit, really hard on the liver 'n' stuff. But I think you gotta do it concentrated to get that effect.
super for cleaning one shot outa your brush, or cleaning car parts, or stripping wax. I'd try it somewhere it didn't show if I was gonna wipe a car down with it I don't think a 30 year old Earl Schibe job would hold up to it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

probably wouldn't spray laquer over any paint that I thinned with it until it cured really good.

It real good for makin' ya loopey, but I think if you did it too often you'd forget why. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Main ingredient is solvent tank solvent, and in the same family as mineral spirits. So say my ZEP rep guy.

Its one of the benefits of getting let go from a company that moves to Canada or Mexico. I'm using it currently to get me a new education.

You're right on with the "if it works we gotta outlaw it" shit. I must be an outlaw cuz I got 10 Gallons of Tri-Chlor 1,1,1 in the garage now. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Company would have had to pay someone to remove it from the property so my boss set it next to my truck and when we left to go home it was gone. Neither one of us knows what happened to it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thanks guys
The stuff I`m looking at is from Tractor supply store.
They have the low gloss black.
has anybody used that stuff?
Kinda like that blitz black by John Deere
If that stuff dries fast it may not spray worth a shit in the heat and humidity of sunny Florida

Used to buy 55 gal drums in 60s. I used it to clean greasy parts, my Dad, a house painter, used it to clean oil base paint from his brushes. Probably why my hands shake now, nerve damage. Probably could sue some manufacturer for not telling me not to drink the stuff. I could probably get $1.98, attorney could get a couple million! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Isn't that the place flamers get their parts?

If you want the official definition, I can give it to you.

The area I supervise here at BP makes it.
It is a very light hydrocarbon. To the lyaman, lighter fluid would be about the best analogy. However, there is light and heavy naphtha.
It usually contains high levels of benzene, so be sure to take proper precautions when you use it. (rubber gloves and respirator)
The lighter naphtha's are used for blending stock in gasoline.
It believe it is outlawed for private use due to the benzene levels.

I see everyone yawning, so I'll stop there.

cannibal,,,

I have a gallon of gloss and a gallon of low gloss...

I plan to use them for my frame and inner fenders and whatnot,

my buddy is a cheapskate and used it for the roof on one of his "rat rod" cars, the gloss black, and it turned out nice looking.

it has a long dry time, it stayed tacky for a while.

another cheapskate buddy used the john deere green for the body on his car, and it looks ok.

I am planning on painting my frame when i am on thanksgiving break. I can let you know how it goes...

but i am also gonna be real busy working on customers cars... might not get to it.

Did your buddy thin it with Naptha to spray it?

fordiac
11-03-2003, 10:13 PM
yes. he thinned it and loaded the gun, We all took turns spraying, i had the best technique, so i did the most spraying.

it went on well, we did a few coats to make sure, about an hour in between each coat, or somethign like that, we just took a few good long breaks.

just give it plenty of time to dry I went back the next day, and accidently put a finger print in it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
