View Full Version : Need paint advise, websites, help!
The kids in shop got one of the doors for the '29 just about stripped and I am getting ready to begin prepping it for paint. I thought about just spraybombing it but I may try to go ahead and do the job right. What is the absolute EASIEST method to use? I have never painted anything before so I am a total novice. I tried searching some websites but they all make me feel stupid (acrylic, urethane, enamel, 1K, 2K, etc. etc. it is all greek to me) Can anyone tell me some helpful websites (with info. the average joe can understand)? I need to take these parts from bare metal to paint as EASILY as possible. Not looking for show quality just a process that will give a beginner a reasonable shot at success. I think I understand how to do the bodywork okay, just everything after....Thanks-

Good tech stuff on this site
http://www.autobodystore.com/cgi-bin/config.pl?
Those are some very good sites, answered lots of questions- My next question, what is the easiest for the beginner:
-base coat / clear coat
-single stage
and what is the difference between:
-laquer and enamel, and are these considered "types of topcoats"
Thanks-

I think that laquer is the easiest, it sands easy if you screw up.
It comes as primer and top coat. But if you're down to bare metal you'll have to pickle it to get it to stick.
If it were me I'd go with an epoxy primer, flat is easiest to spray cause you can spray it dry, and it hides a lot of ugly.
The down side is it's not easy to stripe or letter(you can't wipe off your mistakes) so if you're planning on some sort of lines, you'll probably need to have a friend who knows their s**t.
We do indeed plan on lettering the door with our "shop logo", can epoxy primer be left as a top coat, due to its moisture resistance? Can a person still purchase lacquer paint, I thought it was done away with due to environmental concerns?? Thanks-
