My name is Don and I am the founder of Historic Race Car Forum, which is a friendly website for racers, 'wrenches' and 'fence sitters' from the 50's, 60's and 70's to buy/sell and locate lost historic race cars. It has no commercial affiliation.(Learn more about why and how the website was created by clicking on the "Home" page or the "News" tab.)
We are asking for your help! If you were alive in the 1950’s maybe you can help. Please read on…
Design of the book: The book will cover the life history of Doug Thorley from his early beginnings in Colorado where he raced his unbeatable ’33 white Ford convertible. It will feature his moving to southern California which he often calls ‘hot rod heaven.’ It will take you up to his glory days of racing ‘floppers’ and being the first Funny Car to win the Indy Nationals with his famous Corvair. It will capture the development of aftermarket racing components, such as his header business, from the 50’s through the 70’s. It will include excerpts, stories, experiences and points of interest from famous racers, builders and drivers; as well as other aftermarket product developers of that era.
If you’re not famous how do you fit in--in a big way? We want to include your stories and pictures. So what can you do? Tell us how you knew Doug. Tell us interesting stories about racing against Doug. Tell us about going to the shop and buying a set of headers from him. If you raced with or wrenched with Doug, we’re sure you have some interesting stories to tell. Please send them to us along with any photos that help tell the story.
Send to: Doug Thorley, P.O. box 480, New Harmony, Utah, 84757. Please write out your stories by hand or typing them out is even better. Go digging into your archives (garage/closet) and find us photos of you and your cars, or the cars you wrenched on. Especially good will be pictures of you and Doug together, or any photos of Doug, his cars or the shops he had for “Doug’s Headers.”
Note: We need your full-name, full-address and phone numbers, plus email address if you have one. If your materials, photos and stories are to be used in the book you will receive your full-name accreditation. Additionally, we will contact you to verify photo/information releases for publication.
This should be fun. The book will therefore represent not only Doug’s history, but really the history of all of us old duffers that watched racing, participated in racing, wrenched cars and/or became famous or not so famous—but our stories and pictures will be included.
If you know magazine editors that would like to help us collect these stories and run an editorial about the book, please have them contact us and we’ll send them a Media Kit re: Doug’s Life History—A Racing Legend!
