Here's a couple that aren't really vintage;hell they aren't even real.Just some scrap aluminum I had laying around and decided to paint to look like plates. The first I did for my youngest son complete with the dreaded fake(painted on;not a decal)bullethole! The second I have on the front of my Safari.

In 1956 my father received his new 56 plate in the mail in a brown envelope. He slid the perfect clean 1955 plate into the envelope and continued this practice until 1974 when the State stopped sending new plates each year and began using stickers. Beginning in 1963 he kept consecutive license plates when my mom got a car. I got my 47 Merc in 67 and then my sister got a car and my brother got my grandfathers 54 Ford, so some years I have 4 consecutive numbers. He kept all these in a box, in order. I have all the plates, the 54 Ford and the 47 Merc. I have another very large collection of old plates that I had on the wall, but they are in a box while I build a new wall.

Speaking of license plates.. any AZ HAMBers have a black and white 56 issue plate to spare? My 57 was sold new in Dec of '56 in Tucson and I thought it would be cool to have an original plate (a Dec.'57 exp.sticker would be icing on the cake!)
Ditto for NM guys, my 59 was sold new in Clovis(I think). In IL you can run a vintage plate on a "antique" registered car as long as you carry your reg. and AV plates with you.

Django

I've got AV plates so I have a matched pair of IL '36 plates I'm going to run. But at Pomona I got an almost matching pair of CA '36 plates for $40 that I may run occaisionally. They both start with 8P. A matching set was $160!

Hey guys I'm looking for a 1968 Missouri plate for my Charger. They are odd and not that easy to find. It was a single plate issue ( Mo requires 2 plates ) and was green with white lettering instead of the normal red with white.

I was wondering if you were allowed to do this. Titled it by the engine numbers or something? My other thought was to use my Mom's old crusty '54 plate on the front and a standard blue and white tag on the back (Michigan no longer requires a front plate) so it looked fifties from the front at least.

1940 California plates are the long style yellow with black letters/number

1956-1961 are shorter, 5" by 12" yellow with black letters

Got a pair of emails about this. FWIW don't run a plate that isn't the plate the car is registered to. Texas is prety lax about it, but other states aren't. I've run vintage plates on most of my vintage cars (unless I wanted to go to Mexico with them) and vintage plates mess with cops heads. So, make sure that if you are gonna run them, that they're legal.

Runing a '47 plate on my Modified with a '29 body? It was easy. I bought a '47 (really a mis-titled '41) from a government auction and parted it out. I used a portion of the chassis in my fabricated chassis to keep the original Ford VIN. I had to move the State Supplied additional VIN plate when I rebodied the car, but even if I didn't, the numbers jive.

If I'm ever questioned about it, I can honestly say that the engine was in the original car (I put it in for a short time), that the frame is what's left of the modified original and that some of the suspension components, though modified, are original to the car. I'll admit that I did rebody the car, heavily modify the suspension and the frame and swapped the transmission for a newer 5speed.

I don't think I'd try this with a car that was a fairly stock Model A body unless you can FOR CERTAIN title the car using the engine number, and back up the engine number with Ford's documents that show it was built in the desired year. Then keep a copy of that info with you for the fuzz. Give him a sad story about having to give up the '29 title when you put the NEW engine in your Model A.

In Tennessee you can run year of manufacturer plates. I'm wanting to run a '55 0r '56 (the only years of the "state-shaped" plate that Chevy was also offering a SBC) on my RPU.

Since they wouldn't fall under the YOM rule I'm thinking I'll just find a '55 or '56 plate an apply for vanity plates with the same numbers/letters and take my chances.

I think I can pull it off. Not planning on doing anything real stupid in the RPU anyway.

May be an idea for others...

was thinking ill have to use the lil sticker they give you on the vintage plate to be safe tho

Harrison

I've thought it over too. Instead of usine the sticker why not have a striper paint that info onto the corner of the tag? Maybe even add the county along the bottom too.

It WILL work. I have faith.

I tried that trick to register the same number as a vanity, and it didn't work for me. If I recall the number was still in use. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif This was for a '67 plate though and the number sequences are still in use.

Hey Purple, I was gonna ask how yer plate project was coming along.
I've been collecting the old ones of almost each car I've owned, but my Effie was an Oregon truck when I bought it, only one plate and the DMV wisked that one away when I got California plates for it.
Of the newer state plate ideas, I dig "New Mexico USA".
