I am computer retarded but I have a small problem.
Our car club has a webpage and to be real honest it has never been finished. The guy who volunteered is a friend but he has had the page for 2-3 years and people in the club just quit looking because nothing ever changes.
He holds the rights to the URL since he paid for it to register.
Here's my dilemma....he also has a computer company that hosts all the space. I don't want to make him mad but I really kinda need to look ahead. The webpage needs to be hosted somewhere that the club can own it and no matter what happens the domain name and server space stays with the club. How do I go about looking for server space?
I don't wanna link it to my internet provider in case I wanna quit the net or change vendors. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I would be curious to hear some answers on this one too Root. I am going to move my site soon, low band width is slowing it down and people are complaining.
Besides, it really needs to be updated. I have friends that will do the design work for me but that is it. And belive me, I know nothing about this stuff.

Root, my service costs me 65$CDN (about 50$US) per year for 130 Megs of disk space (My website has more than 450 pics in an HTML database and there is room for WAY more). You could easily change your club's domain name (free with the service) and switch to a hassle free sevice for much less than you'd think.
My 2 cents,

The company is: http://www.citeglobe.com/ but I can't find an english version of their website (it's a Montreal based company). Here is a link to a company I used to do business with: www.simplehost.com (http://www.simplehost.com) .
They offer a good package for 7.50 a month, including a new domain name. Hope this helps. Contact me offline if you need help or more info.

www.icestorm.com (http://www.icestorm.com) I used them for about 5 years.
I think 300 meg ran me about 15.00 a month, never had a problem with them.
Well once they screwed up my e-mail, but they comped me a bunch of rent.

www.siteturn.com (http://www.siteturn.com) is where my site sits... they are pretty good. If you need more info, I can talk to my web guy for ya (I only know how to update pieces of the site, nothing about setting it up).

Well, my wife can build the page as long as there is no java involved. We are pretty much amateurs. I just need a big enough server to handle pics of events etc.
How much space should a guy get for a standard type web page with no flash etc? I know there are tons of variables.

It depends on what you want to do with the website.
25 megs of server space should be plenty for a simple, informative website with a picture gallery.
The real challenge with any website is keeping the content fresh. A site like the H.A.M.B. relies on user input as it's main content source, that's why users are coming back.
A static HTML website should be updated frequently and that's where lies the trap... A generous soul will offer to build it and everybody is excited that it comes to life. Then comes the responsability of keeping it up to date: it takes time and folks get bored with the redundancy... Plan ahead, give yourself dates at wich the site should be updated, publish those dates (It'll pressure you into updating) and ask for user input (i.e: pics, stories, etc).

You hit it on the head Whiz.
People frequently complain to me (not the guy that runs the page) that there is never any change. He ( the web guy) thinks it is wonderful, so it never changes.
Either way I go, he's gonna get mad at me. I think I may just build a complete, stand alone webpage and then drop the hammer...... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I use Speedypuppy (http://www.speedypuppy.com) and have had good luck with them. They run a bit less than $10 a month and offer domain name registration as well. They work with a web designer, but I'll assume that would cost some serious $$ to have him do your site.
Disclaimer: it's run by a friend of mine, but I have nothing to gain from sending people his way.

I'm lucky - a friend is in the biz and set aside some space for my site. But before that I was using CNET.com to compare web hosting services - you might want to start there.

I have the RRT hosted at http://www.nvhost.com They are a Las Vegas based company. I have another site that I built for my boy's bowling team with them as well I get 100 mb of server space for $105 a year. I have never had an outage of more than a couple of hours. An added bonus is that if you sign up for an account and host the domain name with them as well they will pay the yearly registration for the domain.

Use someone that has been recommended by someone you know and trust. I've had no end of trouble with hosting companies. Some start out good and grow bad over time, others never seem to be able to make things work.
I have given up and starting soon will be hosting my own web sites and mail off my DSL line. If it were more than a hobby that probably would not be good enough, but since I'm not longer making a living doing Internet stuff it should be good enough.
$100/year should get what you want.

So signing up for 5 years wouldn't be advisable?
If they start out ok and over time go to crap.....
