It could be a bad seal in the slave. I know that was somewhat common in the aftermarket hydraulic clutches for the earlier VW's, especially after a few years use.

i think i may know the problem, its a vw...

Van Clutch, I thought you said Von Dutch.

Trey you dumb ass everyone is entitled to an opinion but it is just WRONG to knock someone persoanlly about their ride.
Pat you did try to bleed the the system correct? While bleeding the line was fluid being moved to the slave cylinder? If it was then the master is and was good as its primary feed was moving fluid and you can also assume that the hose and routing is good as well. The last option would obviously be the slave cylinder. It is not uncommon for the slave to go bad and not leak.

no fluid was coming out of the master when i pumped it, but fluid was going to it- i checked the system all the way down to the master. yet when i held my thumb to the master and pumped it, it created pressure- i think i will replace the slave out of " i don't what to try next"- should not the master shoot out fluid when pumped and no output line attached????? i don't worry about gettin the vw ragged on, i know that my other car will tear the hides off most of the cars of the dub detractors. thanks for the advice

Generally fluid will not just shoot out of the master without fluid pressure (i.e. no air/moisture in the system) If you just took off the line then maybe the first pump but after the pedal came back up it sucked air into the master and you would have eliminated that. Have you tried to bleed the system now that the new master is on and what method are you using? It is not the actual VW post that gets me but the individual brand bashing. In general I am a VW guy but I am open enough to appreciate others.

bleeding via pushing the pedal down with the bleeder open, closing it, letting the pedal up, then repeating
**DONOTDELETE**
10-28-2003, 12:06 AM
You should be pumping it up 5-10 pushes holding it then opening the valve. When the pedal bottoms out close the valve and repeat is that what you are doing? If you pass 32oz. of fluid to the slave you either have one huge air bubble or slave issue. If you can move fluid and actually get the slave to move but it breaks down under pressure that is the master piston/seal assy' allowing blow by.

Pat-- is the 82 water or air cooled? (I've had lots of buses-62',67',68', and 78' and a water cooled 84 vanogon). If it's water cooled and it ever starts leaking coolant between the case and heads, sell it FAST! The heads were a strange alloy that corroded by coolant and the cost like $800 or so each if you can find them. If you have a diesel, do you know that any inline vw motor (rabbit, golf, jetta, etc) will bolt right up? Good swap.

Make a line of t-shirts with the Van Klutch logo on them and you'll make enough money to build a gnarly Spicolli-Mobile outta that bus!!!

it is a diesel, slowest bus on earth, but usually dead reliable, thanks for the offer rev, i am going to replace the slave today- figure new slave and master- should do it- if that don't, i'll just push it down the hill into the ocean- see if they really are airtight

this is the van that i slept in at the portland swap, then hauled a model a frame, front end, rear end , pair of 59 apache fenders, a radiator, set of heads and other crap home in. is it hod rod enough now??

Pat--if you ever swap it (check the net-bunch of info on the jetta-vanagon swaps) DO NOT use the 16valve motors. They are powerful, but it's way up in the powerband and hard to get the rpms up in a van, so it'll feel like a slug.

Traditional Rod Site? Then you better get Ryan to change the header picture at the top of the site as that is not what I would classify as a "Traditional Rod". The only thing those 3 guys are missing are sweater vests! Pathetic that a fellow brother rodder came here for help and even listed it as being off topic and he has to face hypocrits. If I remember correctly American Rodding did not evolve entirely out of American metals and was more about making it work no matter how or what it was. I am a rodder, a VW enthusiast and car fanatic no matter what the make. So I have a question then: If a original steel body is mated to a aftermarket set of rails is it a "Traditional Rod"?

Would a 1959 north american made vehicle with a splash Gene winfield be considered "Traditional"???

problem solved- asked the vw shop about it- they said pretty much impossible to bleed that system without a mechanical bleed apparatus- bcaa free towing and an hour shop time. while the van was in the shop i had to do my errands in the 31 plord. traditional errands. thanks to all who offered their help and wisdom http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Heck I got the same dick head gestapo response from one bozo when I asked for Volvo help the other day. Thankfully I got plenty of help and the problem solved.
If HAMBers cant get help on their family rides from others without assholes mouthing off then this place is getting to a sorry state of affairs.

if you wanna get technical about it, i don't think they had the internet back in the 50's... so if everything is to be 100% historically accurate, then we should all throw our computers away and go wrench.
