So, I got this set of 440 rods. They have factory pressed in wrist pins. I want the rods, but the pistons are still good too. Any tips on how to get the pins out without damaging anything? Thanks in advance. Have a nice day.

Pin press 'kits' have U shaped shims and spacers used to support the piston pin bosses while you press the pin out of the connecting rod if your trying to save the pistons. Use the appropriate shims between each side of the rod and each pin boss to avoid tweeking the piston. If your tossing the pistons you can cold press the pins out of the rods. You can use a propane torch to gently warm the small end of the rod to help relieve some of the press fit. DON'T over heat the rod end.

If you really want to save the slugs your better off taking them to a machine shop that has the right equipment to press them off the rods.

Make a fixture to hold the rod steady, and support it up to the small end of the piston. Turn a punch that will slip into the end of the pin with a shoulder a little smaller (.025 -- .075) than the hole in the piston.
Put em in the oven until they are hot, then zoom over to the hydraulic press in your garage and perss 'em out.
Or take 'em to the local machine shop and pay them to press 'em apart. Or send 'em to KC and I'll press 'em for ya if ya want.

Do Not try to hammer 'em apart.

If it don't make ya dirty it aint yours http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They're still not budging, maybe I'm not using enough force. Anyone else?

The press fit can be pretty tight. When cold pressed (recommended only if your gassing the slugs) the pin will let go with a good pop and maybe even moan and groan they're way out of the rods.....that when you know you had a good fit.

Find a good machine shop to save those slugs for ya......
