That's right folks, only $995.00!

I can't believe this shit. I think I'll go give away every posession I have except for my car, then drive off and live in a cave somewhere as far from the rest of society as I can possibly get.

Funny, ALL of those t shirts were $18 a year ago. Now they start at $42. Has the guy paid any of his debts yet?

I used to proudly wear my Von Dutch T shirt until I discovered all this crap. Now I wear it in the shop, and it's all greasy, with REAL grease... No kidding.

It's kind of a shame because they're decent looking clothes with a good name, but sold my assholes to morons.

I gotta agree, that's crazy expensive!!
It's too bad that things become a fad as they do.
But, it'll be a cold day in hell before i give up my threads because of people that dig the fad.
If you know about the name, the man, what he did, or have seen his work and like it.
Wear it!!

At least when people ask you who Von Dutch is, you can give them the real answer!!
Lets see a "fad" buyer do that..

just my 2cents. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I took the wife to Monterey last week, and we were walking along the little tourist trap/ expensive retail row. There was this faux-punk rock clothing store, and they had a whole case of the Gen-u-wine Von Dutch trucker hats, belt buckles and shirts...

I walked out.

Hell, I would. What are they gonna do, sue for trademark infringement? Did Von Dutch even have surviving family members who could lay claim to his intellectual property?

I'm digging those hardcore-type terry cloth wristbands...
I know Von Dutch used to wear them ALL the time, or was that P-Diddy? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

that whole store and clothing line is a bunch of BS. if kenny knew his name and image were on shirts and trucker hats that brittany spears wore on mtv and paid 50 bucks for, he would be rolling over in his grave. everytime i see a flying eye on a t-shirt i just cringe. hopefully the fad won't last and we can all forget the store even existed.

Man, I understand where you're coming from. I was going to get the flying eye too. I decided I'd just get some Dutch style pinstriping done in the top, middle of my back, just below the base of my neck. Posers f'in it up for everyone.

I always thought that the reason VDO was so evil was because they owe money to certain artists that did work for them, some HAMB members, to the tune of $10,000, and that he never paid the REAL Von Dutch's family any royalty money.
Does anyone know who which HAMB guys these were?

Peddro, it is for this reason I thought it would be cool to have the shirt say something like "Von (Bitch, Douche, Dink) CRIMINALS.
Just a thought.

Exploiting something real by turning it into something that's not only intensely fake, but also astronomically expensive is one of the few things I find truly offensive.

Aside from that, it actually DOES affect us. Dan Kahn's written some stuff about what's happening with this fad thing in R&C, and what it boils down to is that when people are willing to pay $48 dollars for a t-shirt that would cost $8 with any other kind of logo on it, they'll probably buy a Deuce grille shell, hang it on the wall of their condo, then eventually get tired of it and either scalp it off for an obscene price or just throw it away thinking it's worthless.

sorry... i stand corrected on that. thanks for clearing up my mistake SF...

machino's, i'm not COMPLETELY averse to having a rant about something you love being fucked up the arse by posers. i'm sure everyone has had a favourite local band that made it big, and when you've seen the type of people that get into them you kinda think "fuck you, that's MY band!"...

i've got two points to make about that slice of the human psyche, and for the record, i believe it's the only part of the whole von dutch saga that ACTUALLY gets us riled up. for 95% of everyone that claims that "staining" the good man's name is the reason they're pissed off, i just flat out don't believe it. firstly, from all accounts i've read, the guy was a drunk, and an arsehole to boot, and secondly, THOUSANDS of people have had their legacy 'stolen' but no-one rants for them.

no, i think we get pissed off because people we don't like have 'stolen' our clothes, or band, or whatever. it happens every day. i think you're better off to get over it! you know what, i LOVE blink 182. yep, BLINK 182! a band that constantly talks about boobies, and appeals mainly to 14 year old girls. no self respecting 24 year old musician would admit to that, would they!? yep, they would, and i do, because that music has spoken to me since i was a teenager, and i don't care WHO listens to it now, i love it, and i'll keep listening...

if you really love VDO clothing, keep wearing it. if ya don't, don't. YOU know who you are, do you really give a fuck if some stranger on the street does? i don't...

Autocol...I know what ya mean! I had this buddy years ago who would hunt down the most obscure, anti-commercial music he could find, then flog it as "something only a few hardcore guys like me" will 'get'. He usually latched onto acts that went nowhere, but when he brought me a recording of some "hot new underground band" called Nirvana back in the very early 90s and hailed it as the "coolest underground anti-establishment stuff" he'd ever heard, I gave it a listen and shrugged it off. A little while later, when they exploded onto the mainstream market, my friend was pissed off to no end that his secret little slice of rebelion had gone nationwide!

I laughed myself sick...he had that happen to him SO many times with other bands...before Nirvana it was Metallica...and he screamed just as loud when they "sold out" and became famous!

Funny stuff! Like what you like for the sake of liking it and screw what the rest of the world thinks...you'll be far happier that way!!!

Dutch would be proud, he wasn't about a fashion, just pullin' lines and havin' a good time. Part of that is gettin' greasy, I think.

1) I noticed that the t-shirts have shot up in cost too. That's in the California Car Cover catalog.

2) My 16 year old nephew who doesn't own nor like cars of any kind (what the hell?) just bought a Von Dutch t-shirt.

I work with sterling silver as a hobby. I bet theres less than $30 of silver in it, and maybe 3-4 hours of labor to make the master. The rest take less than an hour to produce, start to finish. At even $50 an hour, I come up with $100, cause we do need to make a little on the top.

Don't think that this is the first time that the cool underground culture of an elite group of people with specialized interest has been co-op-ed by Madison Ave squares in order to make a buck. It's a standard operating practice for guys like McG (director of Charlie's Angels movies) to mine the youth and elite groups for nuggets of "cool" that they can incorporate into something marketable.

Don't like it? Ignore it and do your own thing. The only people that will think you unhip are the folks that depend on those Cool-Mining Marketers to tell them how to be hip.

For a good paper on how this happened with the Beatnik lifestyle, take a look at this page on "Beatnik to Beat to Diet-Beat" (http://proxy.arts.uci.edu/~nideffer/Tvc/section2/08.Tvc.v9.sect2.Smith.html)

I remember a while back, SamIyam did a madlib type post for intros which was hilarious.
Please fill in the following:
I remember when Von Dutch Originals was _________. I got my ___________ at _________ in ______________. Kenneth would be ___________ in his __________ if he knew ___________ was selling this ______________. I can't believe _____________ wore ________________ on _____________________.

Or if you don't want to waste your time, you could use this and post on a VDO post that already exists. (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/dosearch.php)
