I know someone has told me before, but I forgot. How far off do I need to drill my lowering blocks to center the axle in my '54 chevy? I'm using stock springs and a '55 rear end. Or is it as easy as measuring the distance from the locating hole on spring mount to the center of the old axle?

I would measure but I believe it is about an 1 inch...

The old timer who I talk to says about 1.5-2", but check for yourself, and let me know, cuz Im doing the same to mine in a couple weeks. I think RB's has lowering/ relocating blocks just for us. I'll check on it. -J.

yeah, just measure it,from the old hole to the center of the aksle. It will be no big deal if you move it alittle, the torque tube has some room for that, but it will look better with the wheels in center of the fenderopening.. I forgot it the first time, and it looked a little funny... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Been there, done that. On the original hole the wheels look wrong in the opening. I just drilled the axle pad an inch forward. I'm using Posies Super Sliders with no lowering blocks on a '57 Chevy rear end. The axle saddles have to be moved outwards too.
Don't eff up the pinion angle like I did. It was a simple fix though using tapered shims that I bought from an RV shop.
Congratulations on losing the crappy torque tube, you'll be much happier now.

I ran 285/70R/15's on the back of my 50 delivery so I needed the tire to be very centered for tire clearance. Mine required a 1.5" relocation to be right-on.

2" for sure.
It will place it in the center of the opening.
Experience counts...
