If I run a sbc in my sedan is it best to install a recessed firewall or lengthen the frame and keep the stock firewall? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I'm looking at a dual point or magneto ignition if that matters. Thanks,MP

I have never owned a Model A..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But fellow HAMBer ABomb does. He made his frame longer. The longer wheelbase should help the ride also.

If You NEVER plan on running the stock fenders and boards then lenghtening the frame about 5 inches at the firewall works great for several reasons. 1. The car looks more correct, especially without a chopped top. 2 The car will ride a little better due to the longer wheelbase. 3 You can now fit the motor perfectly with good fan to radiator clearance and also have room to run an HEI or anything else. You will also be able to "pull" the distributor without pulling the motor. 4 you can "piecut" the frame about 2 degrees at the firewall and get a built in "rake" look. Are you going to channel the car? I wouldn't change the fire wall, just incase you decide on a differant engine later.

I want to chop the top 4" and channel it the width of the frame, about 4" Do you think there will be enough room inside for a 5'10" guy with this combo? No I don't plan on running fenders and boards.

Both me and my son are over 6 ft. tall. We have a mini van middle seat that still has all the seat mechanism for adjustment under it. That is about like having a 5 inch riser under the bottom cushion. Ours is not chopped or channeled and our heads miss the top upholstery about an inch or so. You will have to have the seat right on the floor with a thin cushion and then cross your fingers. I would try to find one set up like you want yours and sit in it. Dale

MP33,if your buildin a 30/31 drill out the spotwelds on the firewall and spin it around you'll gain bout 3/4 inches.you gotta cut off the bottom and reweld it up.Its a really old trick from back in the ol'days.I lengthen the W/B about 3 inches too, same as a 32 W/B.106" and like the guys said before it'll drive better.........Shiny

MP33 PLEASE do not cut into your firewall. Original ribbed firewalls are pieces of art and very important to the "over all" asthetic and appeal of an old ford. The use of a bitchin or any recessed firewall should be punishable by law. Remember it's about the relationship between the elements that comprise the whole.
