It's 11:00 AM in San Diego and the sky looks like dusk. Smoke has blotted out the sun, people driving with their lights on. House smells like the inside of a chimney, but at this point we're thankful that we still have a house. Fires have been moving rapidly west out of the hills, the place where I had my Merc stored up until 2 months ago is now burnt to the ground. 96 year-old guy dropped dead in the middle of his street watching his house burn down.
Sure could use some of that rain and snow from the east coast right now...

Yup. Pretty crazy. Here in El Segundo the sky looks milky and it stinks like burning brush too.

Hopefully the winds and heat will come down soon...

I'm worried my parents and brother both evacuated on Friday. Haven't heard from them since. My dad lives of off Summitt and I15. I called a buddy that lived in the same neighbor hood as my brother he was packing up and he thought my folks had left already. Tim

It's bad my car, house and everything is covered in ash. Looks like night time off and on outside. I live 10 min from the waterman fire in San Berdoo and 20 min from the Grand Prix fire. Can't even go outside the air is so bad. Had a few friends now that have lost their homes I hope this ends soon.

I'm sorry to hear about the wildfires down there,up here in b.c. we just went through one of the worst wildfire seasons this summer, whole towns gone, the devastation was unreal!then a few weeks ago we had insane rains that caused major flooding,i guess everyone had been praying for rain all summer to put out the fires and boy did we finally get it.

Damn, while I am sulking back here in upstate NY because it is starting to get cold and we have seen snow, it seems like a piss-ass little problem to what you guys are going through. Losing your house and valuables collected over a life time to a fire is an unthinkable horror. I'll keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.
P.S. Does anybody know if the fires are affecting the Diamond Bar area? I have a friend that lives there and so far I haven't been able to contact him.

Valley Center was hit pretty bad. Now I see that there is another fire kicked off in Otay Mesa. We're OK here in El Cajon, the fire seemed to have moved from Lakeside through the Canyon to Miramar Air Station. This shit is like something outta a Stephen King book...

My wife and I live in Alta Loma so the fires are literally in our back yard. The ash falls from the sky like snow and the air is so thick with smoke you must wear a mask when outside. Friends that live in Rancho Cucamonga lost their home yesterday and others that live in an adjacent neighborhood were evacuated as a precaution last night. Unfortunately, all they can do now is wait and see if they'll have a home to return to.

Went thru something similar back in the 70's when I lived in the Tujunga/LaCanda area... Seen what the fires could do also to the bay area back in the 90's when i lived there... It spreads fast and has no care as to what and whom it attacks.. Hope all is well.

Well Fudge, the flames are now 3-4 miles due north of me. Alot of houses, Lake Murrey, and the marshy San Diego river between my home and the fireline, but it is getting a little dicey.

Spent the last hour or so packing up the pictures and personal documents so they are ready to go if need be.

Think rain!

just got back from Hollywood Hotrods, in Burbank (i was the sleep-deprived quiet dude with the shaved head and big goatee)... kinda smokey, but not bad at all...

clear skys directly over my house, but a few miles in each direction is a LOT of smoke... particularly from the Simi Valley fire.
Just moved my grandma out here from PA... told her how there is rarely ever anything out here like earhquakes or fires... Less than 2 weeks later she gets evacuated from her new apartment (nobody hurt, just tons of smoke). Yeah, she's never gonna believe me again...

with some luck, and the skill of the firefighters, it'll be over soon...

I just talked to Rogue and he doesn't seem too worried at the moment.
The fire came up to the crest of a hill across from him and leveled a house but it turned around so he's just sitting in the dark with no electricity. "The Wife" and their new son are fine also. He said they've been clearing brush around the house and the pool is covered with ash, but their house is adobe so it won't burn, it'll just fire into a clay pot!

For the record, my cel is 619-454-5950. I am also available should my assistance be needed as long as I don't have to shift into action-Jackson mode here at the home.

My wife is packing her favorite outfits and my 7 year old is over at some close friends a few miles to south. I'm just waiting.

I just talked to a business associate, who called to cancel our 7:30 breakfast meeting tomorrow. He was holding back the tears, said his neighbors house in Scripps ranch is gone, but somehow his home was spared. He is in Singing Hills now at a buddies, but may have to evacuate again as the fire keeps moving closer.

I guess I am getting a little concerned at this point. Shit, I even took off my flip flops and put some shoes on.
I just put my 53 Chevy grill and some of my other prize custom goodies in the back seat of the crew cab. I don't know about this one.

A cold one will hit the spot after this is all done with Eric, we'll make it happen! Good luck to all!

Have been thinking and worrying a LOT over friends and family in So Cal... except for cousins in Fontana, I wasn't too worried about my family which live mostly in the Pasadena area, but now it seems to be jumping all over the place, and the San Gabriel Mountains (Mt. Wilson, etc.) are an easy target when them Santa Ana winds come to town.
Saw in the news it's gotten so bad all the airports in So Cal shut down, partly because of fire possibly near them. I hope everyone here and their family comes out of this OK.

The mayor came on the TV tonight and asked all employers to keep their employees home tomorrow in order to keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles. County and city offices will be closed. The Miami Dolphins arrived in San Diego at 4:30 this afternoon only to find out that the Monday night football game has been moved to Phoenix because of the fires here. Someone asked about Valley Center, glad to hear that Rogue ad his family are fine, there were 57 homes lost there today. A guy tried to land his light plane in the smoke at Mongomery field (small private airport north of downtown) ran out of runway and tried to take off again only to lose control and crash into the freeway. Fires seem to be moving south across the border into Mexico. If they hit Tijuana there will be many more lives lost. Right now the air is clearing a bit here in El Cajon (east of San Diego), I think that the winds pushed the fires far enough to the west that they are past us now. Hopefully by tomorrow they will have burned out or have been brought under control. Thanks all for the good thoughts and prayers, my family is fine but there are many good folks out here tonight that aren't as lucky...

It's crazy out here. Luckily I'm pretty safe where I'm at. We had fires come within a 1/2 mile in '67 and within a mile in '84. We've had pretty steady ash fall since friday. My driver is a mess but as long as that's the worse that happens I can live with it. I hope everyone stays safe.

The county of San Diego is virtually shut down today, all county and city offices, banks, etc. are closed. Most businesses are closed with the exception of some of the groceries and a few fast food places. Ash is falling like snow flurries, hard to breathe when you're outside so most folks are staying inside and keeping the windows closed. Here's another pic of the sun taken just a few minutes ago, 9:45 PST...you can't see it in the pic but standing here looking directly at the sun (yes, it's possible to look directly at the full sun through this smoke) you can actually see the spots on the sun. This is some weird stuff. Looks like the worst of the fires may be over for our area, just waiting for the smoke to clear, they say it may take days...

Every time I see some senseless idiot toss a burning cigarette out of a car window I think about things like this. We have had some pretty bad fires in Utah this year, mostly man caused, but nothing like what you guys are going through. Next time you see someone throw a butt out the window give him hell. That's why we have ash trays.

That's Long Beach.
I'm just glad (would do the "thank god" thing if I believed in such a concept) we aren't in the part making the smoke.
I haven't breathed so much smoke since the riots a decade or so ago.
Yesterday the smoe kept the shut up house cool, sheltered from the sun.
Today I watched the thermometer move like a minute hand, from 62º to 82º just while I was eating breakfast...

"this sucks" would be very understated, I myself didnt relize how serious it was until I saw 60 foot flames on that hill, and still I worked all day and couldnt do anything to help.

[/ QUOTE ] I wholeheartedly agree... cruising around Eureka tonight listening to KFI-AM, and the reports 'n updates, I was reminded of a study citing positive ions (cue Prof. Frink voice.. "a-hey! Flaven!") in the Santa Anas really bringing out the worst in people.
No shit.
I know that's an understatement, but studies have shown crime waves and arsons spike up when the Santa Anas blow into town.
It doesn't make it right. Just trying to make sense of any of it, if that's possible.
And since hearing about fires sparking up in Lake Arrowhead, where my bro and his wife live, it doesn't make things easier. At least there at her mom's place in Corona.

The air support that has been showing up down here has really helped. The fire jumped across highway 8 last evening (the major east-west freeway into San Diego) but as soon as it did the air tanker came in and knocked it down. That's the kind of support we needed but couldn't get becuase most of these planes were farther north at the San Bernadino fires. I guess this fire fighting equipment is like the snowplows back east, you only need it once in awhile but when you do you wish you had ten times as much equipment.
I'm leaving on a trip to DC today, I think that the airport will be open for all regular flights. Fires are mostly burning in areas away from where I live now. Many folks have had to leave their homes to stay with friends only to find that their friends had to evacuate as well. Someone on the TV said the other day that the area that has burned in and around San Diego is the size of the city of Chicago, over 250 thousand acres. Thanks to everyone for their good thoughts and prayers, the people of San Diego are really pulling together to support one another. No craziness with looters or other civil disobedience, people just want it to be over...

Best of luck to you all, I would wish for some rain for ya but I know the likley hood of that happening is pretty scarce. They had a Satalite pic of So-Cal and a bunch of the pacific ocean in our paper today, puts a different view on it. I guess we are pretty lucky we don't get a lot of this here just the smoke and ash from Aussie in bad years (2000km away).

The wind seems to have shifted and now the wall of rire is moving toward the mountains. They are evacuating Julian and the surronding towns. The air everywhere is hard to breathe, but it is cooling down here on the coast. I'm praying for us all and for a quick end to all this. BTW the newspaper says the fire was probably started by a "hunter" from Covina who got seperated from his buddy and set a fire to call for help. He was given a citation and released. When questioned he dummied up. News says weather will change soon, possible sprinkles, hope they mean water sprinkles instead of the ash sprinkles we have now. Lets all get together at Classic Malt Shop Fri nite.

yep, it's getting nasty again all of sudden. i hear the two fires in the northeast are about to converge. fire officials are saying they don't have the manpower to tackle it before it hits homes in julian and ramona. it's almost impossible to contact family and friends out there right now - no power or phones.

my friend droopy shot this sunday afternoon at the beach, miles from the fire:

Hey HumboltCat...I lived in Duarte when that fire came thru in '81 I think. I vividly remember cuz my buddy and I took our double-dates to the school-yard at Royal Oaks School for some late-nite gymnastics, occasionally looking up at the flames to say "Hey, that looks serious!...slobberslobber". Indeed. When my buddy went home he ended up spending the whole nite on the roof of his parents house watering back the flames, his made it, the neighbors didnt.
My wife just called to say evacuations have been made completely across the top of the San Berdoos, all the way to Yucaipa. We're not worried but I know several rodders up there in the way, including Bob Bauder's shop. Think positive.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you folks. Out here in the prairies we don't have the wildfires ; maybe the odd grassfire though.Right now we are in the middle of a winter storm;freezing rain and snow and I wish that some of it could be sent your way. We take a lot for granted out here; no earthquakes,no major forest fires or massive floods, so I'm kinda thankful for the environment I live in. We get the odd hailstorm , thunderstorm or blizzard, but it's small potatoes compared to whats happening out there.I think I won't bitch about the weather quite as much!(gotta go shovel snow off back deck!!)

Cool... my folks have a cabin in Big Bear... while it's insured and doesn't have really any personal stuff up there, it's still a hassle to deal with the insurance and get it rebuilt. Contstruction Jobs will be booming in SoCal for quite a while!

I will offer refuge at my house to anyone that is displaced by the fires. I'm 55 miles north of Los Angeles ... I haven't extra beds but I have lots of floor space.

This photo was taken Monday - the "clouds" are smoke visible from my house.. .. it isn't really close to us (for that I am thankful) but still quite ominous - very much like "armegedon"

http://www.hollywoodartglass.com/burning.jpg

My phone number (cell) is 661-435-3800... .just call and if you need someplace to crash, let me know... I also have an acre of land for those with campers - also for extra vehicles they need to store to be safe from the fire.

its cloudy and raining all north of the valley, the simi/santa clarita fire has been put to bed but sometimes I still smell smoke. I think they are still battling some up in big bear but the weather is helping alot.

Just got back home from a few days in DC. San Diego looks so much different today than it did on Tuesday when I flew out; I mean that in a good way though, the smoke has blown away and the air is clear. Coming in on the plane I got to see first hand the devestation in the outlying areas, the hills east of town are all black. Sure hope it doesn't rain too much before some of the grass can grow back, next thing we'd be seeing is mud slides.
It was interesting watching the "out of town" news reporting on the California fires, these talking heads on the tube all seem to want to get some angle on the story instead of just taking the fire and loss of property for what it was. Nobody builds homes in California in a "fire zone". It's no different than the folks on the east coast who get hammered by hurricanes, I didn't see any news reports after Isabelle faulting people for building homes in a "hurricane zone". I guess I'm just a little tired of the whole thing right now. In a few days there will be some other "big" story that the news can put under a microscope.
Glad to see all the Dago HAMBers get through this OK, thanks to all for the support and prayers, I'm sure the good vibes helped....

Mind-numbing! I'm glad that you guys in the S.D. area seem to have pulled through O.K. Since moving to Alabama, I've had the dubious pleasure of waking up in the middle of the night with tornado alarms going off, and hunkering down while tracking them on the weather channel, but that's just a few hours distraction compared to what you folks have lived with this past week. Hope you only get enough rain this winter to keep things damp. After all this, mudslides would really add insult to injury.
