So what do you guys use for the timing cover to oil pan gasket area? I got 3 sets of the rubber style 4 piece pan gasket and every one of them seems to be too thick to fit in front. Both too thick and not long enough to reach the corner of the cover and block on both sides at the same time. I don't want this damn thing to leak 5 minutes after I get it in the car.

Also... if anyone had the bottom half to a ANSEN chevy cast iron bellhousing, I'm looking for one

I always use RTV clear silicone. You can use the bottom gaskets and put a bead of the silicone to fill in the gaskets or just run a healthy bead of silicone around the bottom and forget the bottom gasket. Let the silicone tack up good (about 5-10) minutes and put it together. My engines have never leaked using this method. Anybody else wanna jump in here??

Same here, RTV, but I like black. Looks more traditional http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I believe you have the WRONG gasket set.

There are 3 different ones pre 86.

I like to buy the Fel-Pro 1 piece sets. They now make a 1 piece rubber gasket (both the front, rear and side pieces all made into 1 piece). They are like the factory kind for 86 up Chevrlet V8s but are made for the older stuff.

About $30

Dammit! but that's kinda shiney black isn't it Tinbender? I need some flat black RTV.

Seroiusly, I was thinking about just straight RTV, but wanted to hear tthat it holds up good enough. Thanks for the replies, Wednesday I'll go finish this clunker up.

Deuce, I tried the gasket that came with the cheapo timing cover and it has the same problem. I've heard of different gaskets, but if the one for the cover doesn't fit what is the application for the one I need? '68 327 block, factory 6 qt. pan (year unknown) and O'Reillys 9.95 special crap-o-matic timing cover.

You might try going down to your lcal NAPA store and see what they have that fits that year engine. They usually have good gasket sets...thats where I usually buy mine. Not cheap but good quality.

Use that stuff that comes in the easy-cheese can. It's made by permatex, and it's kinda expensive ($12 a can) but a can should replace an entire oil pan gasket. That's what Saturn told me to use on my baby momma daily driver http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I used it for the timing cover and valve cover on that, and it worked so well that I use it for pretty much everything now!

Installed a 1 piece pan gasket a few weeks ago. Autozone calls them "heavy duty". Costs a bit more, but their really easy to install.

Yea that stuff Hot Rod To Hell recommended is good stuff and really easy to use. i had to use some of that RTV on my rear main cap where the rear main seal comes together. it really seals good. i know that is in a different place but it will it is working still on my engine and that was almost two years ago now. i know this is common sense but don't apply too small of an amount of the stuff as it probably won't seal. sorry to be redundant in my post.

btw...that engine looks real nice.
