I have a 153ci 4 cyl. Can anyone tell me what flywheel I need for it. 153,or 168t standard chevy, will either of those work. I can't find any info on it. Thanx, Larry http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

i think that block was only drilled for the straight across bolt pattern starter, which would use the 153 tooth. the staggered bolt pattern starter uses the 168 tooth. take a look at the starter mounting pad on the block and see what you have for mounting holes.2 holes straight across means 153......if there are 3 holes (i don't think so) in a triangle pattern, you could use 153 or 168.

If its the 153, an '86 SS Monte Carlo Starter is a good choice. It is a heavier Duty version of the 153 tooth Starter. Thats what I ran on my 355 until I swapped to the larger Flexplate a while back.

Dual Windings, I think was the difference.

I used a GM gear reduction starter in my T - tub because of a space limitation caused by using stock T dimensions for my tube frame. I had to drill the block for the new starter. Here is a pic of the engine in the tub.

Here is a pic of the tub the engine is in. 153 cube bored 60 over with a shaved head.

They are half of a small block chev with half the cylinders so I would hazard a guess at half the weight. Or thereabouts.

360 pounds according to Tex Smith's book.
And it'll sound bigger to the masses if you call it a 2.5L http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks.....but there is one more question....do they mount at the front of the block like the early V8...I have an old Hurst motor mount for a V8....could it be used?? thanks

Mine uses a front saddle type mount like a hurst made up for the application. They were side mount originally. The original ones like my 65 one were shaker motors so I don't know what it is going to be like yet mounted the way it is. It has hard rubber biscuits for the insulators.

GM has a straight across and an angled gear reduction starter. The straight across version for the small flywheel bolted right on my '69 153 block in my track roadster pickup. I've used those starters on all my Chevy engines for the last 7 or 8 years - I'll never go back to that boat anchor starter.

those little motors are great. a friend built a full fendered unchopped model A pickup with that little 4 banger bolted to an S-10 5 speed and a AV8 style quick change rear. he ran a hood top but no sides and it was grey primer. it was a sweet little bugger. i really wanted it but he sold it for more than i could afford. very clean truck but what i liked most was that little "Iron Duke" 4.

lets see if i have a pic........

So do they use the 153tooth flywheel? And a GM part# on the reduction starter would be killer. Larry http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
