View Full Version : TECH! Pics of shortened prop. (driveshaft)
Here's a pic of the 100E prop I shortened for my ford pop. Actually, shortening was a secondary consideration, adapting it to the Sierra 5 speed was the bigger part of the job.
Here's the finished job.
In this pic, the output flange is malleable cast and cannot be welded to, so I bolted the other flange to it, the one that has the prop tube welded to it. This piece is forged steel and can be welded. I then modified the parts so I could weld the original 100E sliding joint to it.
I started by truing the cast flange in the 4 jaw chuck on my ancient lathe. I cut away the unwanted extension that locates the old joint. I then bolted the other flange to it, turned away the remnants of the original tubular prop and bored it bhrough a good fit on the 100E sliding joint. I then counterbored the cast flanged joint so the 100E part would locate in both pieces. The 100E joint was shortened and all the parts welded and then bolted together. The prop tube was shortened. the two joints phased and welded together.
Hey presto, a serviceable propshaft made from what I had laying around.

Looks like it will work to me. Good use of existing parts, a little time, and problem solved with money in your pocket.
Did you havbe it balanced, or just let it be, seeing as it is quite short?

Easy when you got a mega-lathe sittin in the shop!
Please pardon my dumb uncultured american ass, but what exactly is a "pop?" Been meaning to ask for a while...

Anglia
Ford Pop, short for Popular. Same as USA Anglia, thanks Surfmonkey.
I havn't had it balanced, I will if it seems bad when I run it. I was very particular to true everything in the lathe.

Nice work Mart! Please give a little more info on that Sierra 5 speed box. Over here we called that thing the "Merkur XR4ti". Kid you not.
I understand that the box was a Ford Type N. See link.

How strong is it? I understand that it's swapped into MGs. Do you think it could handle the torque of a mildly modded Flathead V8? No, seriously!?

Nope, that box will not survive abuse behind a 200 hp or 180 Ft/lb engine. Nope, no way, nada.
I had a '89 Merkur XR4ti and the very first thing that went out was the gearbox. Replaced it with a very expensive at the time Mustang T5. Bought a kit from ? BAT ? I think.
Behind a banger I don't think it would be a problem. Or behind a highwinding, low torque engine as long as you didn't sidestep the clutch.
FWIW, the 4 speed version of that box was used in 4 cylinder Mustangs here in the states. It's tiny. The actual box part is smaller than a Model A box, but the tailshaft housing and the shifter well is very long. This may be the same box that the Model A guys in Dallas are using to adapt a 4 speed into their closed driveline cars.
