that's what I'm planning on doing, (on a 39 banjo) I know I'm supposed to dissasamble and swith the trumpets so the spring hanger is in front of the axle, but then can I still attach the bones the way they where attached ?

Maybe I am not understanding something, and I don't know exactly what your project is but if you move the rear to the opposite side of the spring, it will shift everything associated to it the same distance as the spring width. Catch my drift? Does that even help? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, just bolt it back together.

As TomH says, yes. But keep in mind that will relocate the axle about 10" (or so) BEHIND the spring cross member. If your modifying the frame it should work.

You may have to "dick" around with the spring and shackles to clear the wishbones.

I have a setup like what you want to do and everything fits okay.

I think Smokey did that on his truck.

You mean like this? (Sorry for the fuzzy pic.) Just take it apart and swap sides. Replace anything busted or worn out while you have it apart. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know you're aware that is what I did on my Modified. Just pull it apart. Switch the housings to the opposite sides from where they started and ptu it back together (with the new seals or whatever it may need) remember the clearance is set with the gaskets on each housing to center section. Don't change things there to much.
The Wishbones will bolt up to the new spots they now belong.
If you need to "adjust" the angles of the 'bones at all, just apply a little heat to the forged area that bolts to the axle flange, with a torch and gently move things... clear as mud?

Thanks guys, thanks Mich, building my own mod soon, can't deny your's is a big inspiration, got all the running gear from a 39 French Ford, kinda of a mix-n-match of different year US Ford stuff, using a Citroen pick-up cab that'll get roadsterised and narrowed, prepare to answer loads a Q's!

Check out the bearing races for the wheel hub too. (out of round?)

Harrison, the center section (quick change) looks good; where did you get it??

Looks like a fake-o quickie. Note that the torque tube mates up with the center section in the middle instead of the bottom like a real quickie. It's also short enough to clear a '32 gas tank.

The fake QC came from some man in the mid west. He only cast a few and a vendor at the Nats South here in Knoxville had one with him a few years ago. I don't remember the man or the vendor but they were friends. I bought it for $100.

I like it better than the ones available from Speedway (and others). It seems to be larger and wraps up over and under the banjo much farther.

I should have placed an order the two or three more.

Also, I don't know if it would clear a '32 tank. It wouldn't clear the crossmember on a '39 coupe I tried it on.

How about some close ups of the spring/shackle area.

That is a old trick used on trip cars(moonshine haulers)all of Mr Days( Red Voite) prepared autos had this set up and was very popular on round track cars in the early 50s. very nice look clean .

I got a set of old replacement shackles and bushings aftermarket, not ford and the plates hit the mount on the axle. Had to grind a square corner round for clearance on one plate each side. Also the A spring is narrower so washers had to go beside the spring to fill the 1/4"
difference.
Sedan Dad, my reply way back wouldn't go through, will try agian tonight to send some images, got a lot further along since, frame box and paint

See the shackle trimmed to clear the mount inside top?. The tail lights are going to be so far inside the wheel I am going to put in a second set of blinkers and a 3rd brake light in the center. look's like I can put a plate under the spring Ubolts and make a post on it to mount these from.

Show's how the tube pivot point should line up with the wishbone pivot. Naturally have to line up from the end (easy) and above (harder to find the center of thr bell) close but will have to tweak some more. Plan to remove the gears, axle and spring and make sure all work's smoothly by hand when tightened down

Shock, used fronts on back and back on front(I think)

The mounts will have to be done over to reach my holes and the body will need slight recesses here also, kind of expected that
