Six Gun; what first gear do you run? I have a 2.93 first in mine with a 5.67 rear gear.Still trying to get my timing of gear changes up to speed as I ran a 2.78 first Toploader forever with a 5.43 gear.I have an honorary membership into the British Columbia Super Shifters which sounds alot like your group.I met a guy last night at Irwindale[Calif] who runs a Jerico behind a blown bigblock,TOO KOOL!Three pedal cars forever!!! Those are the original type and were Comet only seats as the T-Bolts used Bostrum (sp) seats resembling the original factory seats. Comets also had a molded fiberglass insert in place of the rear seat area. Wish I could find one of the FG inserts at an affordable price, I don't think anyone reproduces them.

thanks falconred, i just picked up the radio delete and heater control delete off epay, for my 64.

anyone have a pic of the rear seat insert? thanks again guys!

illflameit1;I don't think a factory rear seat blockoff would work with your altered wheelbase. It basically was a one piece fiberglass cover for the rear seat area.I made an aluminum cover to seal the trunk from the interior and covered the seat riser area with plywood and carpet. How is your Comet coming along? ROY.

I finally got the locker on the 4:11 gears in and may try to run at Gulfport this wednesday. I ran 12.14 with the 4.57 locker over running my motors rpm range and 12.44 with 4;11 gears spinning one wheel through first gear last fall I hope it will make the 12.14 with the locker in it.

Judd;I am so happy with the Jerico and the McLeod clutch!!!! My Comet has been running quicker on almost every pass! We have had a couple hickups along the way,but generally moving forward!! YEE HAW!!!! Go to DaBlueOvalBoys , there are a few videos of my Comet, with one BIG oops!!! Judd, have you had a chance to run your Comet lately? ROY.

Judd;are you still using the T-5? If so have you solved the issues you were having? It sure would be great if we could find a location mid-country and get a bunch of Comets together!!!! ROY.

ROY, thanks you answered my question. i planned on going with metal too to sep. the truck from the cockpit, and didnt know if that glass would be right in an altered. so i just threw it out there for a pic.

man sounds like your combination is working better and better everytime you tweek it, good luck!

Armageddon is coming along great the full frame is in and i have started tacking the cage in it also. i spent a ton of cash on the 460 motor, with the 496 p.a.w. stroker kit and the hemi crank and rods.

i am running a full reverse valve body g.m. 400 turbo automatic with a 4000 stall, i wanted to go stick but dont think its a good idea to try to shift during full track wheelies. haha.

the ford 9 inch just got back from my buddies who shortened it to 46" backing plate to backing plate. 457 detroit locker, and i have a speedway front gasser kit for the front axle, i also have a econoline setup, if the speedway axle doesnt look like it can handle the abuse. also picked up the mopar springs and comp engineering slider kit for the leafs.

lots of welding to do but hope to be a roller by early may, so i can start back on the body and interior. enough yakking heres a few pics., george

I'am running a 3.08 first gear and 5.43 in the rear...Those Jerico trans are the best bang for the buck mine makes me look good (and I an't that good) I pedal it between shifts (just real quick) but it's hard to tell ... I run a 29.5 by 10.5 stiff wall slick made a big differents in my 60'...

George;WOW,you really are building a full-on tube chassis,it looks plenty strong.A good friend switched from a C-6 to a TH400 and picked up a couple tenths with no other changes, plus it seems more reliable. The silver 65 Comet that has been posted on here runs a Speedway front end and has not shown any issues in 3 years of racing. The Econoline is a strong axle but will need to be narrowed.Your 64 will be AWSOME and one of a kind!! Keep us posted! ROY.

A bit off topic being a 61' but thought you'd find this interesting...appeared in Wichita Kansas paper on 4/12/2010

Mennonite Relief Sale will offer '61 Mercury Comet

BY BECCY TANNER

The Wichita Eagle

Antique vehicles, quilts, plants and food are some of the hundreds of items expected to be sold Friday and Saturday during the 42nd annual Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale.
Proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Mennonite Central Committee, a world-relief organization operating in 60 countries.

It is one of the largest sales of its kind in the United States and Canada, and traditionally attracts as many as 22,000 visitors and raises between $300,000 and $500,000, said Jerry Toews, one of the board members of the Mennonite Central Committee.

Among the featured items for sale this year is a 1961 Mercury Comet with only 50,000 miles.

It was donated by a Hillsboro woman whose family wishes to remain anonymous.
The car was kept in a garage the entire time she owned it. It has its original seat covers, dash instruments, jack and spare tire, Toews said.

"It is very rare that one finds a 50-year-old vehicle in this condition with all its original equipment," said Toews, who got the car running after it had sat idle for 15 years.

It needed a new battery, a gas tank cleaning and carburetor overhaul, he said.
"It started right up and was purring like a kitten," he said. "I drove it out and, well, the brakes stuck," he said. "So, I brought it back home, took all the wheels off and rebuilt the brake cylinders. And now, it purrs like a kitten and I can stop it."
The relief sale also will offer a fully restored 1945 John Deere Model H tractor and a 1929 Model A Ford coupe with rumble seat.

For 42 years, more than 70 Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish congregations in Kansas have donated their gifts and services for the sale.

Along with baked foods, plants, cheeses, hams and sausages, it offers more than 250 handmade quilts, comforters, wall hangings and all types of crafts.

This year it also will include a children's auction. Children, accompanied by an adult, can bid on items such as games, dolls and toys. Organizers say the auction is meant to teach people that no matter their age, all can play a roll in helping people in need.

Hmmn. The baked goods sound ,um,real good!:D
Heres another shot of the 'Rocket, now being put through its final fitment and interior work. Hard to tell the rear wheelhouse opening has been opened up so the axle centerline is now about 4 1/2- 5 inches more forward. It sound like my engine builder is going to have my little unstroked high compression 289 dyno'd, which I am really looking forward to!!! I'm make sure I video it. The average person will never have any idea how much work we put into these cars, and most likely will never appreciate them like we do either!! With each week, a few steps closer:

Mike Wansels comet

This picture’s so old they didn’t have color film yet! Left to right is Tom Brown, Me, my oldest brother Randy, and Cliff Sasfy. The car belonged to me, and was a 1964 comet cyclone with a 289 cu. inch motor and Holly 4-barrel. I had installed a Racer Brown camshaft with solid lifters, and a 411 rear gear to give it more “gazoopa’s” off the line. I also had a set of 2″ dumps welded into the exhaust header, as I couldn’t afford after market headers at the time. The tires on the rear were Atlas Bucron’s with just the slightest bit of tread on the wide tire.

I have a couple of pic's of my '64 Cyclone, but not sure how to post.

bought in Jan 1964 in Organge county calif.
blk/blk 4 speed 289/210

I knew about 271's later that year. They sounded great ,mine had hydraulics and the 271's had solids, thats all i can say , I heard them.

i lived in Garden Grove and Jardine Headers were also there,I also had a slight mod to my engine ...my memory is shot but i think it was at Hayden Proffitt garage,or maybe Keith Black, just gettin to old.

All they did was some kind of tweak to my distributer and timing.
My car was strictly a street car i was only 18 or 19...it was great.I seem to remember getting 30 to fifty tickets with it in a few months...lol
i even did five days in jail at theo lacy security facility for drag racing, just off Garden Grove blvd by the Santa Ana River.

I had the car until the mid '70's at which time i drove it off a small mountain in woodside calif.

I want another one!:D

Thank you guys for all the pic's taking me down memory lane.
I ran my car at lions a couple times e or f stock...mid 15's at 113 mph

Saw GAS Rhonda roll his ford there and Garlits run in the '7s with front engine dragsters...it was all great !
and saw all of the first funny Cars, the Comets !

Heres a close up of the air cleaner emblem that I used.I did have to modify the area to fit it but not much,it was close.I bought the emblem out at Crites. Its not in there catalog.I guess a local guy makes them and drops them off.At the time they only had three of them and I bought all three. This was two years ago so I'm sure they have some more.I think its looks good on there.Let me know if they dont have any I could probanly break loose of one.

Since you asked nicely, here is one of my exhaust. It sounds pretty good but the pipes are rotten. I've been meaning to replace the system but with the future modifications I have planned I'd just have to do it all over again. I'll live with it the way it is for now.

Went to the track and I'm changing back to the 4.57 gear 12.39 was the best it would do with the 4.11's. I bought a new "N" case to replace the cracked case and will update to the bigger cam. I did make it to the third round still lookin for that 11 second pass! LOL.
I'm afraid to step up on my clutch I just got it to stop breacking with the set up I have now. The old T5 was shifting good though.

ROY.

Awhile back I was asking if anyone knew about a black 64 comet A/FX I had seen racing at Indy in 64 in some various clips. It was painted all black with a red painted roof and red accents in the side arrows. The only think I could make out was that it had wynn engineering on the side.No one seemed to know what I was talking about. In the latest Muscle car review there is a small pic and descripton of the car I was looking for.I should have known it would have been George Delorean, being he had a 65 sponsered by the same Wynn Engineering.
Does anyone have anymore pics or stories of what happened to it.I bet that car looked great in person Black and red with red interior.

Mostly because I thought it would look cool, the added airflow may be of some benefit here in the Central Valley but I doubt it. I've never seen it on another Comet either. I was in the garage the other day and the idea just popped into my head. It's a big blank area and I figured I'd try something different with it. There are 19 2 1/4 inch holes spaced about 1 1/4 inches apart. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Roy, i got 2 front fenders, the ram air hood, a teardrop bubble to mold on the hood, a glass front bumper (going to glass the complete front end together as a flip.):D and a deck lid. also got the trunk mount, larger battery box, and the disclaimer tag for the afx;) i had heard they were not the lightest but were pretty strong so thats why i decided to go with the glass, plus finding and shipping steel front fenders that were good would have cost more, the stuff up here in ohio just isnt here anymore and what is, is rotted or mudd filled. going to narrow the front i beam tonite, as per the thread here on the h.a.m.b. i will post some pics this weekend to keep the thread up! hehe, george

This thread, still proves to be so invaluable! I've gone back over it several times, looking at the various pictures all have posted. One aspect that I've noticed is how different drivers played with the alterations. Most here know how I build AWB's, and the side shots really show somewhat of an evolution of these cars. It seems that most, but not all the racers immediately moved the rear forward, slightly, which makes me think they were or possibly might have been piggy-backing Chryslers spring technology, using the shorter front spring center for better bite. Then, they started moving the axle centerline more forward with alteration.

The GoldFender Comet is a neat touch, where it appears they completely rebuilt the wheelhouse opening, after re-centering the rear axle, as shown by its location in conjuntion with the rear pillar.

Jack Chrisman appeared to have gone completely away from the trend, by squatting down the rear, which meant completely cutting away the interior wheelhouses for space. Ahead of the curve for sure, as he really did well with the car.

I'm not trying to say all this happened for sure, just observing what may have accomplished during the course of the evolution of these great cars. It realy intrigues me. I love it.

Like Dale said, you basically are on your own when it comes to patch panels for Comets. If it needs a quater or a fender or door you need to find a donor car.A 2dr 64 or 65 Falcon or Comet are the same doors.I have a door from a 64 Ranchero on my 65 wagon, but front fenders and quarters are year and brand specific.PM me if you want,I have been working on 64-65 Comets and Falcons for over 40 years. The repairs wouldn't be near the problem if he were alive as he was one of the best body men around here before retiring for health reasons and had already talked about repairing some places on my Falcon, "we'll go over to (a friends body shop) and get us an old hood and make some panels".

Such is life.

thanks, yes the motor is together we stuffed it full of hemi rods and kieth black pistons used the kit from performance automotive wholesale(paw) its their stroker 496 dinosaur kit but we changed a few things opened the intake and exhaust ports up also to match the intake manifold and 2 inch headers hehehe. i will post pics of the motor now that its ford blue. is that the correct color, for something like this, ya think?

i just got done cutting the 400 turbo trans bell housing off to install the ultra bell, we did a full reverse manual valve body and trans brake (though i dont know if i'll use the brake much? i never have before on my builds so i am not too experienced with them:eek::confused: whats your opions on trans brakes?,

George that old 460 should run!!! Mercurys had black engines in the 60s,with either gold or yellow valve covers and air cleaners! I've always painted mine the dark Ford blue,I think whatever works for you is right! I ran 460s in boats for years, wish they would have had all the cool parts available back then, but I still made them run hard. I ran a trans braked C-4 for a few races, they work good but you need to get used to their quirks. My buddy switched from a C-6 to a TH400 and his car picked up a bunch plus it lives.ROY.

They came out of the Flicker yahoo image site,The caption on it said farm show.I thought they were from this years Knotts show.I always like finding shots of my car or someone i know Taken by someone else that hasnt been seen.
Its not looking good for me racing at all this year,Lucky if I finish the 65.Bearings going out in the tranny on the big rig.5k to fix.If it wasnt for Bad Luck I wouldnt have any luck at all.Still not quite recovered from all the trouble last year.
Going to have to sell that 63 S-55 convert i have.

Sounds like the Bowling green HRR is going to be a good one.Jody was saying that some of the Ford Drag Council members are going to be there.Dick brannan putting some of it together.Would love to go to that one.
Just been working on wiring on the 65,going slow.Got snow again here in Denver,Enough already.Sounds like the 422 al stars series is having the same luck, both of there first events have been rained out.

Some motivation.

Mercuryjunky, Thanks for the info. I was hoping the were the same. I have to order one and an under engine brace also. We took about 300 pounds off the comet Thursday, we washed it. I'm going to start the final clean up on the engine compartment next week and then I will start on the front end rebuild. The 9" is in temporarily to test fit and so are the 26" tall slicks on 8" wheels, looks like they will work with a little work on the lip. I will try to get some "start" photos soon.

The 9" is in temporarily to test fit and so are the 26" tall slicks on 8" wheels, looks like they will work with a little work on the lip. I will try to get some "start" photos soon.

Looks like the "Comet of many colors" right now.

I Kinda like those Multi colored Comets.Got any pics?Keep us updated.Heres some pics of that mount in my car.

thanks again Roy, that plate actually gets sandwhiched in by the water pump so those are coolant passages, not to sure if i like the way it is designed but we'll see.

yes that is a real vertex mag, expensive little booger too.

and yes those exhaust plates do just that raise the ports and really open it up no more bump inside from the old casting design.

i didnt know anything about em till the old guy down the road brought them down and said here figure out what these are and you can have em...

I did a teardrop to ram air hood on my comet. Let me know if you need any info. It looks like your initial cuts are the same as mine. I did grind out a layer or three and resined the teardrop flush with the exterior of the hood. Once i was done, it looked like it was glassed at the same time.

yep we used 5/8's hemi studs to bolt the heads on. the 5/16's exhaust bolts go thru to the head also but the studs do the majority.

I havent had any issues with it. Its been like this for 5 years now, Though i havent driven it much in the last 2. Resining the scoop into the hood instead of on top made it stronger since its bonded to the hood and then finished off basically sandwiching it as if it was done in a single mold

George-
The rears are the Firestone D.O.T. slicks, through, Coker, Summit, etc.. They advertise 10/15-30, just like the Mickey Thompsons, but the Mickeys are a bit flatter, and a bit wider than these, although they advertise the same dimensions. Be leary of that. I did not mini-tub the Comet! But, I did cut the space out between the inner wheelhouse and the framerail, then squeezed the inner wheelhouse back out, to re-join to the trunk floor. I gained almost two inches!!. That, coupled with the fact that the car sits fairly high, made it a slam dunk. I've had people come over and ask how I fit the tire in. I think I need to take some pictures, and point it out. If the car sat down low, it'd hit way up in the top of the wheelhouse. It turned out to be a cool trick with these cars, though.

Lettering? Oh yea!!! Theres gonna be a fair amount, and some really cool artwork as well. It will all pay homage to look of the past.

2) Would the 60's 427 FORD SOHC dragsters and flip topp glass funny cars infact used the 9.2 inch Pontiac rear ends?

Thank You again.

Took the Comet to Vegas for the Heritage Race-Rockabilly reunion last weekend.Never made it across the street to the Reunion but the Drags were great,22 Funny Cars trying to get into an 8 car field. My Comet ran great, running the number, then in the first round I left WAAAAAY too early tripping the big red bulb!! Once again I had the only Comet in the joint!!The car show was Saturday and alot of the cars showed up on Sunday at the Strip in an area set aside for them. Great Weekend! ROY.

Steve;I would love to go to the NHRR but I don't have the time or money for the trip.Jody was saying I wouldn't be able to race N/SS anyway as my Comet is a small block.Have you had a chance to get the Comet out yet[weather permitting]?I guess I need to build that old FE out in the shed!! ROY.

Did not think of them as scary back then.Made my first pass and countless others down that track. But you are right,it was narrow and if you got just a little loose you better get out of it.Ran a G/MP 57 Chevy wagon(sorry, but I like all cars) on 7 inch slicks-5-6 pounds of air,3700 lbs in the 11's at 115+.You get to know your limits quick. It was scarier stopping as it was also a short shutoff.Even Garlits,Art Malone,Sox and Martin and many others ran there. It was just where the sport was at the time.Tons of like tracks at that time.
Like your 'stab it and hang on"because I know that's what I did.Yee Haw!!http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Woops wrong login name, badbird84 was a name I used when I had a 84 t-bird that I raced. I'm building a 65 comet caliente now, I have owned the 65 for 18 yrs and it is time to drive this car and drive it hard. I'll post a link to pics of my build. When I get the comet on the road I'll post pics. I plan on driving the 65 on July 1st.
