my mistake, see what you mean in custom hood.it is resested like a 66,67.That would be some work, crites has only the factory style. Many years ago had engine fire and found out how fast a 67 hood could burn

I've wondered what the story was on those hoods. Were they option only?
Was it Ford's answer to the twin scoop fiberglass? They look pretty sharp!
Certainly don't see many around....

fellows, the "hairy canary" was the McCoy mercury '64 a/fx'er. It wasn't that competitive. Rich Reilly? was the driver/mech. they took the drivetrain out and installed it in a '55-56 t-bird to run a/mp or gas. the body was sold to al heinkle, who installed a 337in. injected chevy. Al and his crew did quite well at old bridge, e-town, atco cecil, and other east coast tracks. The car ran as a c/mp-d/g-d/a. To my understanding it has been totally restored( as The McCoy Mercury A/FX'er) by Rich DeLisi. Just some of the history of this car. Hope this was helpful. Later, matt:cool:

I'm shopping for a new gearset this week! Get it ready before Bakersfield.

We went out to the GNRS on Sunday, but it was raining pretty good by then, and we only spent the better part of an hour walking quickly from hall to hall. Saw a few friends in the Suede Palace (damn, turn a heater on in there!!) , talked with the guys at Mooneyes , then we bailed outta there as the rain came down!

The hood does really dnace around, but I've got the stock latch and safety working quite well. Think it'll be okay.....

Dale;I run just the stock hood latch, not fond of hood pins. The only issue I ever had was many years back,my first hood delaminated going out the back door,YEEE HAW!!!Turns out the bonding agent gave up,called Crites to buy a new one, they sent me one for free!!Before I finished and painted it I reinforced it with laminating resin and a few well placed fiberglass strips. Dale,I ran a 1964 Comet, 289, 4-speed and 9-inch rear with 4.71 gears with a locker.I'm starting to think your gear problem might be the ratios in the trans you're running. If I'm not mistaking, you're running an automatic.Just my opinion, but I prefer a 4-speed manual trans.I think the gear torque multiplication settings are better. You should be able to run 12.00 all day, with an occaisonal 11.85.

This is the same car. Look at the front bumper. If you look close you will see a completely different style Fiberglass front bumper then what Crites sells. This is a one piece unit that incorparates the front splash pan and bolts to the bottom of the fenders. That is what the originals look like.I had heard that Plaza Fiberglass was the last ones to make this style. But I had also heard that Randy Deliusio( sorry about the misspell) Had bought the Mold and can make those. When that car sold the second time in the ad they did specify that Randy had built that car.

Anyway it looks good, I wouldnt mind owning it. I like it better with the Doug Nash Racing face. I wouldve painted it blue and put a Nasty Small block back in it to complete the package, but thats me.

I chose the name "Super Marauder for a couple of reasons besides the badging on the valve covers. Dad ran a service station named Pierce's SUPER Service. My granddaughters name is MARA. The silver is painted to look like diamond plate from Ford's Truck ads--Built Ford Tough. The red is Rangoon Red like the interior. The Black and Blue are from the valve cover decals. Syl

All the pics I have found are in the section on page 100 of this thread.I have been going back and adding pics when I find them to some of the Comets. I still need to go back and add the Canary shots in that post. There are about 4 more to add.
Dave chage it to the straight axle and put the cammer with hilborn injectors and updated with fresh paint and had it relettered for the mecum auction last year. He wanted the car to look like if that Arnie kept it and raced it, also arnie drove the car up to auction platform. it was the first time in over forty years that Arnie sat in the car.

The Beswick A/FX car had a straight axle on it when Dave bought it in the 80's. He left it that way, even though he painted and lettered the car back as when Beswick had it.

Is that an OEM style of breather on the 418 Comet? It looks to be an oil bath style, but I may be callling it wrong? I'm still trying to chase down the "fix" for a clean remedy to crankcase breathers.

65COMET
02-14-2011, 10:38 AM
Dale;how about running lines from your catch can to the collectors? Is the puke tank vented?Do you have any crankcase air intake?Even a so-called closed crankcase has air going into the engine.Scott's 64 just uses two open breathers,I have not looked at the engine after a pass to check for oil leaks, you can't see any oil smoke during a pass, and he wings the piss out of that 289! Dale;I went back and looked at your pictures of the breather system.Could you put an open breather on one of the VCs?What is the plugged nipple on the puke tank for?Could you plumb it to a remote breather? My vacuum pump system has a metered air intake,so I'm thinking you need air in to help stabilize the crankcase pressures!! Just guessing as I am NO engineer!! ROY.

Fellas, do any of you guys know anything about the hood on this Comet? I called Crites about 6 months ago to see if they repopped one like it, and they said they saw it at a show and were intrigued by it, but didn't have one. I'd be all over a hood like that for my '64 if I could get my hands on one...

teddisnoke

Roy- I did a "suck and blow" test on the modified breathers I made to work with the catch tank. Needless to say, I found it very hard to push air through it, and now realize these were designed to work in conjunction with a pan evac system, not by themselves alone. So I pulled a "fast one" and removed the bitchin bottom portions, that register very tightly in the VC rubber grommet, and welded them onto the bottoms of two new K&N breathers, so there is a true 1" opening of breathable space. Two of these should be at least the same, if not not slightly better than Scott's Can't even see my mod unless you take off the breathers! . Off with the hose rig..... As my good friend Dave always tells me: "Hey! You don't know what you don't know!"

The original hood with scoops and bubble was done by Brent after he bought the 64 Dyno Dons AFX Comet 25 years ago.The hood on the red 64 Cyclone in the picture was done by Randy who made the hood. I got this information from my freind Dave who owns the white 65 BFX Cyclone.

Beautiful car, Dominic!! Nice garages as well! Make us all jealous!!

I'm now a bit behind officially on my 5.83's in my Comet. The rearend shop just called me and let me know that my new set of Richmonds (new) are incorrect on the pinion bearing fit. There is two thousandth's runout between the inner bearing surface and the pinion shaft surface. The bearing literally drops right on wihout any effort, which could equate to a spinning bearing. Yea, ya think? Quality control just does not seem like what it used to be.........

Dale;I had that issue before,I had a friend knurl the shaft enough to make the bearing a snug fit.I don't know the exact tolerances but I have put used R and Ps together that you could install the bearing by hand and not had any issues. I agree on the lack of quality control on many items anymore. It seems their outlook is it is cheaper to replace a part than do it right the first time!!! I love the response"it is done on a CNC machine,it has to be right",a machine can only do what it is programed for!!! ROY.

my dad's 65....restored in 2005-2006....owned for about 14 years now after buying it from an older guy who had it stored in a barn in norther Vermont. Car was featured in Mustang and Fords magazine a few years back, and is currently for sale....tried to post an ad on here in the classifieds, but I guess the car misses the cutoff by one year...oh well....

The Cyclone has a 289 HiPo, 4x2 Webers & FoMoCo intake, 9" 3.89 rear, Toploader 4 speed, rally-pac with 8k tach, no PS, PB, heater, etc....she's a real looker, thats for sure! Never seen a car get so much attention at shows and on the road....ran at the track one time after restoration at a nostalgia race, and had some clutch issues....but, still ran mid-to-high 13s @ 100-101 mph bogging out of the hole @ Cecil county.

We have been able to trace the Cyclone back to the early 70s, and it was raced in NY state pretty heavily up to this point. All of the rare pieces (Webers, intake, hipo, rally pac) were in the car at this time, also...however, we cannot pinpoint when they were put on and by whom...great conversation piece, and it seems that everyone wants to buy them!

Working in the garage on the Comet, all the while listening to echo of the fuel cars going off. Heard the prostocks a bit too. On a crisp, clear day, we can hear them pretty well!!

Comets all screwed back together, vibration seems to be gone, now that I"ve eliminated the heavy mechanical fan, and installed a Derale pusher fan up front. Thats good news! Bad news is no traction on the street with those Firestone DOT's!!! We'll head out Thursday evening, and see if it was all worth it....

Your father sounds alot like the way I looked at it 8 years ago,I was lucky enough to live in what I call GOD'S country, took an early retirement,33years as a phone tech but only 51 when I left.Reside on a large parcel but about 5 years ago got alittle scared and worried about money ,sold my classic.Biggest mistake I ever made, money is never where it should be,if you are from the working class. Finally decided to look for another one, tell your dad he has an INVESTMENT in that car, much better than the stock market, don't make the same mistake I did, larry

NO Comet Rancheros built by Mercury!!!! Falcon and Comet doors from 64-65 will interchange, the only difference is trim and door panels. The core support even has the same part number, headlight openings for 65 Comets are not punched out but other than that same stuff.I put a 65 Comet 2dr door on a 65 Falcon Ranchero. Maybe it's a aerodynamic thing, the 64 is alot lower than yours.I cut a full coil out of the front coil and used the front wheelwells as a template for the rear wheelwells. Also,I was running at sea level on 110 octane.

Love this pic, too bad its a bit blurry. You can see Two 64 merc. Wagon tow vehicles. I think Jack always got the Colony park wagons and everyone else got the commuter wagon.Wish we could see the other Comet.Probably some promotional event out in Cali. somewhere. I would guess around The Sachs and Sons dealership. Does this look like Downey ,Ca to anyone.

This is the plan over the summer. Bought my 64 Commuter wagon last Summer. Have to go down to Fast Eddies Moms house in North Carolina to get it. Bought it 5 mins from there. Going to cruise locally in style. Or at least the guys that are in to nostalgia will get it, everyone else will wonder what the hell I'm doing. Heres some pics of the Wagon.

The commuter wagons are very hard to find. There happens to be one exactally like mine on Craigs list in Florida right now for someone who wants to do the same thing.

Ken;as usual you find some great old pictures!!The wagon will look great rolling into a track with the 64 on the trailer. With diesel so high now it will probably be cheaper to use than the truck!!!That blue wagon looks like a 9 passenger version. I'm working on a "drafting hook". You know, the ones you can put out in front of your truck when you sneak up right behind a semi? Its a long drive to Bakersfield...:D
