View Full Version : fuel pressure on a 2G
I have a Holley electric pump that should be pushing 6 or 7 pounds.
It seems to be too much for my Big Rochester 2Gs
('60s Pontiac carbs on a Man-A-Fre on the 454.)
what kind of pressure should I be looking for?

First, double check your float level and needle/float operation. Then, try dialing it down to about 4-5psi. Those old carbs don't need alot of pressure if there is enough volume.
Fat Hack,
yup did that,
I even adjusted 'em to close at a lower level.
I just got the whole thing set up and turned on the pump, watched for leaks, flooding, explosions, whatever and with everything in the carbs adjusted per spec they all started flooding big time.
after re-adjusting the floats to close earlier it didn't flood as soon or as much but it still flooded.
I am thinking I need to go back to spec and reduce pressure.
I scrounged up everything to do it, just wanted to hear it run TODAY!!

The critical part is the regulator. You've got to use a GOOD one. Set pressure to 2-3 psi. Good to go.
The Purolator regs suck, buy a Holley reg and set it at a lower pressure, try 5 psi or so.
first attempt was without one,
but I pulled a gooder out of the pile and a gauge,
and will plumb it all in right tomorrow.

it pays to never throw anything away, I've had these separate bits for years!
and now that I think about it, it seems I've heard 2-1/2 psi before?
thanks, Paul
finaly,
she's running, sounds good, real good.
My regulator only adjusts down to about three,
I put the floats back per spec (stock for the carbs)
and it still leaked a little so I readjusted all the floats to close
1/16" sooner and adjusted the pressure to 3.5 psi.
pulled all the plugs, rolled over a few revs to pump any excess fuel out,
put it all back together, fired it up, set the timing, did a quick rough adjustment of idle and speed and she sounds great!
revs good, idles good, I'm happy!
(this is all so basic for most of us, I just felt that it might be inspiring
for some younger less experienced car kids to read)
I'm going back out with a camera.

and a side note:
if you are running these louvered air cleaners
the paper filters SUCK!!
use a K&N # E-3120 or equivalent.
