Snatched this off the land speed mailing list:
Ray writes,
“Here's a rookie's attempt to capture the essence of the World Finals thru
the eyes of an old car nut who is new to land speed racing....but has a
little experience in hotrodding, sports car, drag and oval track
racing....and programming. (Yeah...since 1966.)

There's some pretty cool machinery there. I'm fascinated by the 1/2 Rodeck
hemi coupe. That sucker is something else. There's another one on the
last page that doesn't have the captions yet, but the motor is from a 70s
Renault Gordini Mirage that ran at LeMans. It's a 4-cam turbo V6 in a
roadster body. Very, very different.”

Thought I was the only one that knew of the Gordini! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had a R-17 Gordini until I had to pay a couple of thousand dollars for the brakes...! So Selling the car (for a loss) was simpler than replacing the brakes! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ran fast though!!!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Ray doesn't give us the answer, but the roadster's hubcaps are Rambler front, DeSoto rear. Thank you, thank you very much.

Hey WingNutz... wasn't the R-17 the car that they put in the wind tunnel and found out it was more aerodynamic facing backwards than forwards??? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Would the HAMBer’s interested in answering newbie Bonneville questions please stand up? I hope to run the M/VOT class with Bleed’s girlfriend driving in ’04. I have the rulebook and talked to a few folks who’ve raced there but never been there myself. I’m looking for thoughts on stuff not in the rulebook such as:

What’s the deal with the license run? When does that happen?
What time does things get going each morning?
Any tips on passing inspection?
General tips for a first timer?
Do you need to join a club to run and get a number?

There will be more, thanks in advance

The licensing runs are the same as any other run. You go up to the staging area, wait in a long time, the starting line officials announce it is a licensing pass and you go. There are several lic. steps to get up to speed-it's in the book

We start record runs at 7:00 Utah time and after they are completed go on to normal runs-usually 8:30 to 9:00 depending on how many cars.

How do you pass inspection? Have your car ready to run. Try to find someone in your area who runs and have him look at your car. Call SCTA, get the name of an inspector and talk with him.

A good place for general info is www.saltflats.com (http://www.saltflats.com)

You do not need to belong to a club-but you must be a member of BNI. As for numbers they will tell you if it is assigned to some one else-can be done on the salt-if you want it per painted or vinyl letters call them-the number is in the rule book.

Hope this helps-Steve
