I'm gonna be showing my ignorance here, but what is wrong with the chop? Seems like a decent car, a little too steep pricewise though... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

hmm... i didnt look at anything else or read a single line of text. I think it "sux" b/c I dont like the lines on the chop. one thing i'll say "its different". I like em to flow nice, EZ and coninous... I dont think the lines on this one are very flattering at all...

this is more of what i like as far as roof lines:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2197651402&category=41 8

fedders, mikes, and bettles mercs have lines that i really dig too.

looks to me like they chopped more in the front than in the back. could just be the pic though.

I like the first one, it's a little more subtle.

the first example (in my opinion) has too much "bulk" above the windows,

the second example looks more like a Hudson than a Merc.

I think you should get in your garage and build something instead of pointing out subtle difference in merc chop styles.

I'll let this speak for itself. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Whats wrong with it? Maybe i'm a dumbass but it looks fine to me, but then again i've never chopped a car and will never be able to afford something that nice anyway. It don't look crooked and the body work looks good, the lines of the body look fine to me, just my opinion

The ONLY crime on that Merc is the pink tweed interior. The chop looks great, IMO.

That second one looks like one of them round-back Plymouth fastback.
I think IT looks weird!
I like the first one way better.
It doesn't look "squashed" either, like some that are chopped just plain too damn low.

All this shows is, different strokes..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

All things considered, give me the first Merc. I really like the way it was chopped including the use of the '50 rear window. The other Merc looks odd, probably because of the bulbous look to the rear as the top transitions into the trunk. Just my preferences I guess.

lmfao, ahhh... mission accomplished. yeeeeeeha! can someone photoshop a visor on 'em?

1st Merc looks like a nice quality car..nice lines and the car flows. 2nd Sucks!...I don't like how the roof 'flows' at all..It looks out of portion to me....But that me,,carry on.

Also notice one is a '51 and one is a '50...different quarters, lends to the look. I think the first is pretty good looking, the second is too high, has ugly caps, the angled b-pillars looks akward, and the fake spotlights make it even worse. Actually, that first one looks almost perfect to me, might actually stand aout a bit amongst all the other cookie cutter mercs.

I have chopped a few Mercurys. The car is not as low as I like them, but there is nothing wrong with the back window (where they go wrong fast) or the door/window fit. I dont like skirts on Mercs because they look like giant larvas going down the road. I dont like skirts on anything for that matter. However, that car looks very good.

What the fuck are you talking about?
Leave that car alone and find something to do in your garage.

Lets see some shots of the Mercs you've done

I agree w/ Daign.

The chop on that Merc. is somewhat unconventional, but I don't think it looks bad at all. Hell, it sets it apart from all of the other over priced Mercs out there.

I think dropping the rear suspension another inch or so and it'd look good. Parts of the car (side trim, skirts) lend a rear rake to it, but the chop and suspension seem to rake forward. Minor, but I think dropping the rear would make finish it.

Sorry P-Pete,I think the mild chop is a good looking car. a little lite as a chop goes yeah- but really well done......the second I think just looks bad-in my opinion-makes the body look pudgy and thick.the roofline and window shape is poorly thought out-IN MY OPINION.

ok, i think fedders merc has a better roof line then the teal one. Its an opinion only though.... in my opinion i would not chop it like that (actually i would not chop it at all b/c i have no clue how to), it was less of an attempt on bagging on a car vs stating an opinion and being curious what every one thought of it. (yes i'm bored at work, again) maybe a better title would be "opinions of the chop?", not that any of it matters, its someone elses car, opinions are opinions, etc... stop raping me over it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Come guys, Ol' Pete was just expressing some opinion to make our Wednesday night a little more interesting. Right, Pete?

I thought the chop on the first one was nice, very sublte. Not something I would want, although I grave chopped '51's. I think we're just used to more tapered chops.

The blue is more like it. But, why don't I like it more?

The "American Graffiti" Merc was a extreme chop and a quick and rough one. I loved it and still do.

Now a bad chop and similar to the purple one as far as style was the "Rudy's Green Flame" showcar Merc that toured the I.S.C.A. shows in the late '70's. That looked nothing like what Robert had in mind.

Personally, we all know what we like in a chopped Merc to have a opinion. But,I truly respect anyone that tackles any kind of chop no matter what the outcome. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

oh, ok I'll buy that. Anyway, if you want to talk about bad chops, this car looks like the guy went shopping in downtown Tokyo and Godzilla walked buy and stepped on his car. Classic example of "Larva" Mercs.

I'm joking of course. This car would do 120mph on the freeway with four drunk cholos in it..... still looked like a Larva.

That last one kicks both of those in the ass! perfect chop. Just my opinion.-stick

How many people replying to this post have ever chopped a top????.....and I don't mean something simple like a model A.....something with compound curves.....not many I bet.

The teal one looks retarted. The black one Kicks ass.

And the first one has a very ugly interior. But the chop does look allright and the side trim works for me too.

I vote for the first one, but then I like 51's more because they look longer and therefore lower.

How about a little lower and a diff color??? ....oh yeah...I don't care for dummy spots.

Fer chrissakes Pete! You drive a ragtop! You could chop it withe a x-acto blade, cutoff wheel, and a needle and thread! Ah, jus' messin' with ya', man. Seriously, though, chopping a Merc is something I would leave up to an old school lead man like Bill Hines. Mercs have a really fine line between flowing and having a pah-dunka-dunk when they're chopped.

Hatch, I did two 49-50 mercs before even thinking about this one. very curvy and very complex..... not to mention impossible to replace.

I still dont feel comfortable doing a 40 Mercury.

I guess none of its really that hard, you just gotta sit and think about where everything is going to end up when the saw blades stop. When I was a kid I just started chopping and it almost always worked out. My 34 has no body filler.

My toughest was actually a vw bug...straight down...no angled pillars, so it was stretched in all directions. The worst part was the character lines that run from the A pillars all the way down and around the decklid. Also saved the drip rails.

My hat is off to anyone chopping anything and actually finishing it. Most people won't pay what it worth.

I agree with Hatch, my hat is off to those who actually chop their own tops. I chopped my own top on my '51 ford. First one I have ever done. Whether people think its a P.O.S. job or wonderful, its my ride and I didn't pay someone to do it for me.

I don't care for either the teal or the purple one B pillar wise, I like em strait up & down. Chops, I've done a few, and they turn out a little lower than planed when your drunk on the fourth of July. I liked the black "guppie" best so far, looked the most traditional.

the "Rebel Withou A Cause" one had a one inch chop or something..trying to remember...Was a 'very mild' kustom...
and looked sweet.

first ones nice
second ones crap
third black one..is nicest.

WEll..i thought the 51 looked alright...i too am not a fan of skirts on mercs...looks fat then...but mine is chopped really hard...how i am going to lay teh back window down, is keeping me up at night. but i think that everyone has an opinion...if it was yours would you be saying the same things? i wouldn't. i would just be happy cruizin around with my buddies in a merc...right...that's how i feel anyway.

here is a pic of mine..

The guy that started this post never cut one...big surprize.
Only good thing is the pic's of chopped Mercs. I could look at them all day. Not a car in this post that I wouldn't be happy to own.

both cars look really ok with me
not really the style i would want if i owned a mercury but
there is nothing i would say suck about them
and im no fan of skirts on anything either.. except maybe 1935-1946 cars or something...

seen some real bad chops, those 2 ebay mercs aint among them...

you can all blow me http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You guys need to get laid (thats what i did last night while u guys were here stewing over this post). If they would, I would PAY keith, beetle, marshal or fedder to chop anything. i like to stirr the pot, have done so since i've been here... jake, i think chopping a convertible (to whomever, i drive it everyday even in the mansoons we've had over the past two days) and having a working electric or not top is harder? but being a fag, i'd pay to have that done too. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
