Hey Guys and Gurls,

Now that this Fridays's Art Show is up and running, I thought I would provide a little extra eye candy.

One of my goals of the '04 hunnert Car Pile Up was to record some of the Pintriping and Lettering that was bound to show up.

There were quite few "Heavy Hitters at the show too, that I did not expect to see and was awed when I ran into them. I am a HUGE fan of the Art of Pinstriping" and can watch people do their magic all day long. I've been known to stop what I'm striping to watch another guy two cars over at a show. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There was alot of cool work at the show and unfortunately I didn't get all of it. Definately next year.

I got about 24 pics going in to this, so I hope you all ENJOY.

First up was this neat '47 Chevy Sedan Delivery with nice script and "Brush Casual" lettering.

Brando is one of the best "Script" lettering guys around and has a ton of different styles. He's also fantastic with a airbrush too.

I really liked this! Do you know how hard it is to make red striping look good on white? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif This had great design work.

This candy orange chopped "Baby Lincoln" has thee nicest pinstriping I've seen. The trunk is just fantastic. I didn't get a pic of it though this year. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

This is a pic of a very special person in my pinstriping life. His name is Will "Jive" Jarvis. He was instumental in steering me in the right direction when I started out.

This guy is a true "OG". He's a BIG name in Chicagoland striping history. A quality guy.

Here's a good shot of the HAMB "Meet "n Greet" banner. What really made this special is the original artwork by our own, Tuck.

I reached out to him for some help on account I can't draw cars worth a shit. He came through like champ.

Here's a neat pic of Larry Von Grobe's WILD Chevy custom. Larry did al the work himself and striped it too.

Here he brought in Brando to handle the amazing trunk work.

Here's a pic of Brando himself. I ran in to him with his family checking out the show.

In the very early '80's, he worked out in Cali and is responsible for most of the lettering on the top Funny Cars running back then. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Then we both run into Jack "the Italian:" Giachino out of St. Louis. Jack is a superb striper. airbrush artist and painter. He is also quite the author, with numerous articles in Signcraft, Auto Art, and Auto Graphics magazines.

Here's a pic of me and Jive with a very special friend of mine.

The guy in the center is Jimmy McCarthy. Jimmy is one of the best Lettering designers around. He does many of the top Midwestern Stock Cars and is a great guy. He was a big help to me in getting all of my Pile Up signs done.

His Father was a one of the old time Chicago hotrodder and racers. His Dad knew all the top Stripers and Lettering guys from "Back in da day" and Jimmy grew up around all that.

I remember when he used to hang around my old shop watching me trying to fake it with the best of 'em as a 12 year old. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do ya all notice 2 things we all have in common in thes pics: 1. We're all wearing really cool T-Shirts and 2. There's a bunch of cool cars all around us.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The last of the Striper pics shows me and Jive with a Young Gun known as "Spaz". I know of him from the Chrome Czar board.

He was striping a ride for one of the "Blacktop Barons" and we befriended him. He was a very respectful young man and shows a lot of promise and desire for Pinstriping.

I wish him well and would help him any way I could.

There's about 75 years of striping experience making Spaz nervous in this picture. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The next 2 pics show some very nice Auto Art in the form of Flames w/ pinstriped outlines.

Yep, MarkX's Chebby is becoming a true famous HAMB ride like Butt Reynolds '56 Chevy. Who coulda thought Pea Green primer with Blue Metalflake flames outlined in white would look soooo good! Bravo! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hey Joel, you Rock Too.

The Artwork on the stall door looks like Josh Shaw's work to me. But Josh is such a nice young man, and I'm sure he would never deface public property in such a way http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Trust me, he probably needed to rewash that car after i got done walking, (and walking, and crawling) around it because of all my drool. just about everything about that car is PERFECTO. i think i have a better close up of the trunk at home, will post later.
also, one of my favorite things about that car is the "crossed wrenches and skull" hanging off the plate. about a 1/4" of the wrenches were gone from draggin' too kool!!

Thanks a lot for posting. Really great stuff.

Great photo's, again! Cool history lession about some of the local 'oldtimer's' who were inspiring to your work. Giving credit where credit was due. And welcoming the young gun's, I know some guy's would feel threatened by new blood and ignore them, not you. Great timing, too. Another Pile-Up fix, on Friday Art Show. Thank-you, sir!

P Pan thankyou for a great selection of shots. Not just the striping shots, but also the people shots. The lines people do are neat, but it is the striper on the end of the brush that creates it. They are really unsung heroes in the big picture. But as a striper I know I don't do my stuff for the glory?
Not that many old time stripers over here. But they would be the ones I like to meet and converse with. I did meet Herb Martinez when I was in the states in '98, a real nice guy.
My inspiration is from all the striping I see, but the man for me is Von Dutch, not just as a striper, but for him as a total 'package'. Be it a good or bad package he was what can only be descibed as a genius. Love him or hate him, you can not deny his talent.
Oh and never let them colors intimidate you!!!!
Thanks again, I hope you don't mind but I will be saving a number of images from your post P Pan

Awsome pics!!! Incredible work by those guys!!! Just wanted to let you guys know that the goldleaf on the GTO was done by hand in real 14kt gold. A good friend of ours Bill Foust did the lettering and the goldleaf. It was kind of hard finding someone to do the gold leaf and NOT use vinyl. Didn't have vinyl in 1965, not going to use it now!!!!

Did Jack "The Italian" Gachanio relocate to St. Louis. Last I knew, he was in Green Bay Wisconsin. I was hoping to get him to lay some lines for me, but St. Louis is awfully far away.

Great selection of pics from what looked like a great show. And the weather looked like it really cooperated. The Kontinentals gotta figure out how to get up there next year for the show and return the favor of attending. If it takes 10 hour to get to Mo-Kan from Austin how much further to Chicago?

Joel,
thanks for posting these pics of the pile up! man... what an inspiration it was to view these photos:) I've been practicing a bit in my artbooks and also on my griptape on the top of my skate deck with some paint markers and it's been fun. I can't wait till i can do the real deal on some metal with a real pin striping brush...need way more practice though. thanks again for all the history as well on some of the famous stripers and the pics of them. Great post and thanks for sharing!
Best wishes,
